For those lamenting "worst" swims & "rubbish" swims - please keep in mind that those days are still better than no swims. Give yourselves the credit you deserve for sticking out that workout. Some days are just like that, but I've noticed that they usually precede some sort of breakthrough......

Juliet - I've been doing flip turns for 40+ years & I still have the occasional oddball turn, I agree - laughing is the only thing you can do (besides hoping that nobody else was paying any attention).....
-
I do the same thing, Juliet, & I'll add on at the end first so that I get the bulk of my work done in case I wear myself out....
-
Cheshire - nice workout. No plan doesn't usually really work out like that because we fall back on our tried & trues.....
-
AQ - hope the hip feels better, stretch really well before you swim & between sets. It will definitely help.....
-
Juliet - like anything else, the more you do flip turns the better they will become. The distance from the wall will come quickly - a good reference point is the end of the line on the floor, where it comes to a "T". Figure out compared to that where you want to start your turn, once you figure that out just hit it at that…

Cheshire - I use a waterproofed iPod shuffle & the headphones I use are the short cord ones. I've tried 2 different kinds of headphones, the ones I currently have in use are the Swimbuds from Underwater Audio & the other ones are from Waterfi. You can get the iPod bundled with the Waterfi headphones either on Amazon or…

With the BIG increase in activity lately, I'm thinking we'll be a lot faster to 2,000 posts than we were to 1,000!!!! Curly - EVERYBODY in any sport, no matter how proficient has those days. Friday was 1 where I particularly felt it, but I get it to some extent on a lot of days. The biggest difference between now & back…

Great swims again, Everybody!!! Curly - now that you've broken through the distance will start to stack up quickly, especially as you get more & more confident in it. Great work!!!! Like AQ, it was a slog getting through it today - I had a serious case of heavy arms. Although my set times were good, my arms felt like they…

Bi-lateral breathing is the ideal, not only for the balanced stroke but because it's said to be the most efficient breathing interval. That said, I always breathe to my left. Although I CAN breathe to my right, I find it very strange & since I can easily last 4 strokes, I do 4 stroke breathing..... Turtle, The best advice…

We actually have the kids do this as part of their stretching before we get them in the water at practice, it also helps them get the feel for a good streamline No doubt lol..... @Turtle - GREAT job!!!!! Great swims, everybody!!!! Stayed with all free today (job got pushed off again, so today was another bonus day in the…

Cheshire - that's my long day's sets, when I'm going every day (which should hopefully start back up in a week or 2) I alternate days with the other set I use - I knock out the 2 1500's in the middle & do some IM's with a freestyle set break in the middle of them. I had started with 5 x 200 IM's, followed by a 500 free,…

AQ - that's fantastic progress in a very short time.....

Unexpectedly able to go to the pool today (the work from this week has been in flux with the snow we've had, so I'll have to pay the piper on that later on). All freestyle: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250.....
-
fishguty, next time I would run to the car & consider it a triathlon ;-)
-
AQ, I would guess that you'd probably end up burning more calories - I think the idea is probably a faster stroke rate but still getting as much resistance against the arm as possible. I've noticed with my swimmers (& myself) that when I try to "throw my hands" faster I end up not concentrating on getting that good grip on…

Lotta good swimming going on, I'm really looking forward to when I'm back in it.... Ashen - great job in the meet. As a coach, I'll tell you that it's a great thing that you caught the coach's attention, it means you swam really well. The downside is that you will not get more attention at practice & will probably have…
-
Great swimming folks!!! Ashen - best of luck, hope you had a lot of fun!!!

Having had some time periods of missing swimming for an extended amount of time, I will tell you that it won't take long to get your mojo back. It's just a matter of a few sessions to shake the rust off. Even the fly will come back quickly.....
-
Fantastic, Curly, great news. Nice work, & the video will help a LOT.....
-
Some fantastic swimming going on!!!!!

That's definitely the way it works, it's like riding a bicycle - when it clicks it's clicked, especially when you keep swimming. Your body programs the things that clicked into muscle memory because you keep repeating them. Keeping my mind occupied is exactly why I swim with an iPod.....
-
Curly - you don't need to swim THAT slowly, just don't go full tilt. You already know that you can physically go further, my psychological key when I was adding yardage was to stop thinking long term (about how far I was going to go), I took the short term view of "Just a few more strokes", which I was able to do without…

Noel - nice swim  newoutlook - it's definitely not nothing, we've all been there & it's taken time to build the stamina. What you're going to find (the really cool part of this whole thing) is that if you keep putting the work in the stamina will come faster than you're expecting it too. The increases aren't linear,…
-
Great work, Everybody!!!! Ashen - it's a BIG step when you can diagnose what's wrong with your own stroke!!!!! Noel - Great swim, nice splits!!!!
-
It's very rare, indeed, for a breaststroke time to be almost as fast as freestyle - that's more likely (although still pretty rare) for a good butterflier..... One thing that will help get more propulsion in the kick is to turn the feet so they're pointed out.....
-
Curly, my first thought is that any workout is a good workout. The second thought is that sometimes we need days with an easier workout to allow our muscles time to heal properly, yet you're doing enough to keep loose & ready for the next bigger workout day....
-
Yogicarl, I saw your post last night but waited until after I swam today to respond because I wanted to see if I got what you meant. I did get it & it does make sense to a point, but when I tried it I found I had to bend my neck down to that side to get my head onto the lower shoulder. I felt like it pulled me off my…

As much as I'm most certainly NOT a morning person, I much prefer getting my workout in at 6am when the pool opens.....

Stuck to the freestyle plan again today: 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 1500, 1000, 500, 250 in 114 minutes....
