  • I'd say Dad is treading on thin ice mistreating the only person who's making it possible for him to stay in his home. It seems like you have a lot of power in the situation and I would use it. Of course, you can't abandon him completely but I would make it clear that you're going to limit your time with him and/or leave if…
  • That is terrific. I can't wait to be there. It's one of my endless mini goals. I seriously have about 30 of them, LOL!
  • I eat salads for lunch most days. Lots of interesting greens, cherry tomatoes, onions, carrots, low-sugar craisins and some type of protein - usually chicken or cheese. I'm pretty addicted to a homemade honey mustard dressing as well. It takes up a pretty big wooden salad bowl and seems to keep me going for hours. Usually…
  • I am pretty in love with the Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Delicious after dinner and I usually have one or two. They're 67 calories each. They seem to do the trick for me, sweetness and chocolate-wise.
  • Oh, and if you want to read something truly hilarious, check out this NYer piece by David Sedaris on his Fitbit. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/30/stepping-out-3
  • I've got an oldie but goodie - the Zip. I love it. Just throw it in my pocket. The battery lasts for maybe six months - no need to charge. I think it's not a miracle device but will keep you conscious of your steps and activity. I work at home and set an alarm so I get up and move every hour or so. I'll note the number of…
  • I'm experimenting with intermittent fasting (basically eating within an 8-hour window, which for me means noon-8) and it's nudging the scale down a bit. My weight loss has been incredibly slow although I'm measuring/weighing/logging everything and exercise. This helps a bit and doesn't seem had to do.
  • Can you plan for something sweet every day when you most crave it? I have to have just one or two bites of something sweet after dinner and have used mostly half of a Skinny Cow mint ice cream sandwich or one or two Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cups. They're small, and I keep them in the freezer so I don't go…
  • One thing I've committed to is staying on MFP and logging/checking in, no matter what. It keeps you connected and somehow that helps.
  • I just subscribed to Daily Burn and surprisingly I love it. I'm doing the "True Beginner" series, which is eight weeks, and as near as I can tell relies totally on body weight -- lots of squats, pushups, etc. There's a discount code here: http://go.dailyburn.com/goodhousekeeping_landing/ -- 1st month free, 2nd month 25%…

  • A daily glass of wine is so important to my overall happiness (yes, I know this sounds pathetic) that I usually pre-log it and measure it out 1/4 c (2 oz.) at a time. Usually my max is 3/4 c (6 oz), but if I have three glasses of 1/4 c each if feels like more, LOL.
  • I can totally relate! I'm a big Evernote person and keep WL goals and inspirational sayings in a note. Wanted to throw a little inspiration your way from my note, and wishing you huge success: Small daily improvements are the key to staggering long term results. "Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish…
  • I was an on and off member of WW for years and find I do much better here at MFP, and certainly save a bunch of money. I think the one thing you don't have is that weekly weigh in and accountability, although when I was going through "bad" spells it just became a horrible experience, filled with fear, loathing, shame,…
  • These are all such great suggestions. I work at home too and just signed up for the Daily Burn True Beginner plan, something I said I would never do, but it's great. I absolutely love it. SO convenient to just get up from my desk at home and do the program. About 20 mins-1/2 hour. Nobody at work will miss you for that…
  • One thing that might help is to just commit to tracking your food everyday and see what it's telling you and where you might make small tweaks in a way where you don't feel deprived or totally overwhelmed.
  • I'm a fanatic for honey-mustard but hated the chemicals in the low-cal/low-fat versions at the grocery store. I make my own now: 1/2 c mayo, 1/4 mustard, 1/2 oz honey (I add all the ingredients to a bowl sitting on a scale, so not quite sure how much that is - maybe 1+ teaspoons? you can substitute stevia or whatever if…
  • It definitely can be like watching paint peel. I really like the messages here about giving it more time. Back when I was on WW, no matter how consistent my food intake and exercise was, there was a definite pattern of three weeks of loss and nothing on the fourth week. It was almost like clockwork. Frustrating! But this…
  • I'm a WW veteran for sure, having joined and had some success several times along the way. I really began to find that the meetings were too big and not particularly helpful, supportwise. I ended up standing in line to be weighed for half the time. YMMV, obviously. A Fitbit and MFP is a lot cheaper and in my opinion just…
  • Being fat is hard. Losing weight is hard. Pick your hard.
  • Highly recommend The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work by Yoni Freedhoff, M.D., specifically the section called "A (Very) Brief History of Dieting." He somewhat hilariously sums up all the diets ever known to man. This falls under the "crash diet" category. He says this: These diets aren’t meant to be a…
  • Amazing courage to share your story, and thank you for doing that. I think most of us here, to one extent or another, have been in the position of having to start again. Of course, most of us sure haven't been through all that you've been through, and I totally admire you for reaching out and trying again. I think at some…
  • I don't know what 21 day fix is either, but maybe I should - LOL!
  • Six months is a long time to stay committed. Great results!
  • Unbelievable. That's some amazing determination. Congrats!
  • There are lots of people who have to try a bunch of times before they achieve their goals. Good for you for not giving up and trying again. I think just starting the process of tracking what you eat can be revealing and motivating. Best of luck to you!
  • I love my wine as well. I've been losing very steadily while incorporating 1/2 - 1 c of wine per day into my plan. I have to have a plan I can live with and this makes it liveable for me. I just track it and stay in a calorie deficit. I drink it slowly, believe me! LOL.

  • I think tracking is vital and will be motivating in a month or so when you see how far you've come. I've also really cut back on sugar and carbs, which is something I never, ever thought I could do. But it has really tamped down the cravings a bunch, to the point where most of the time I would rather be eating the good…
  • You have your whole life ahead of you - thrilled for your fantastic progress.
  • Thrilled for you! Congrats.
  • I agree with natslastjourney - Half Size Me is great -- and she's been through the whole WW thing, so has some great perspective on being consistent, being responsible for yourself, etc. I also like Tips of the Scale with Sam Lomelli - great podcast.
