Speaking from a scientific standpoint, the study is actually quite well done, and the authors performed a number of additional observational and interventional studies that helped strengthen the presumptive but not proven association between carnitine consumption, the action of gut flora, and production of TMA and thereby…

All -- Thanks for the replies. I did some research and found some helpful tips for healthy restaurant eating from Tom Venuto (Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle). To quote: • DON’T order restaurant or fast food burgers, they are usually loaded with fat and very high in calories. Instead, choose a grilled chicken or turkey…

Hi Mahanaibu, Ahh, the seafood restaurant suggestion -- if only this excellent source of nutrition ranked higher on the spectrum of my protein faves; I'm usually not a fish guy but must admit a wear prepared sole, halibut, or sea bass really can be quite delicious! And the other idea to ask for some customization of listed…

Hi Theresamcalla, Yes, seems a lot of the tips recommend some version of bringing your own snacks! Definitely do-able, and I suppose the snacks can be some or all of a meal, too. I assume I pick something close and guess the portion size. The real question comes in as to how to "adjust" for added salt and calories -- do I up the portion size (that fixes the…

Hi Fellow Members! I'm a 49-year-old Bay Area doc, dad of 3, who just joined at the beginning of January 2012. Certainly being in the healthcare field, I value good health and also want to model good behavior for my patients. By observing a 1600 kCal diet (calorie-wise, about equal parts protein, fat, and carbohydrate),…

I am a 49-year-old guy who started this program 6 weeks ago as a rehashed New Year's resolution, one I've never been motivated to fulfill in the past. What was different for me this time was staring at turning the big 5-0 that is happening this summer. I had my last unmonitored meal January 6th and then after that…
