There is a great book by a type 1 athlete and diabetes coach who is also a CDE named Gary Scheiner. Book is "Think Like a Pancreas." He also wrote a book for diabetic atletes. He is at all the conferences. Also check out Ginger Vieira s book " Your Diabetes Science Experiment." She is a t1d health coach and former weight…

Shining Light, I've been thinking a lot about invisibility recently. Being obese and now age 50 I often feel that I am a disappeared person in public. I don't like it. It freaks me out that the larger I get the less eye contact I get on the street. However, cat calling is abusive and harassing and downright scary. I don't…

Hi there. I'm a binge eater and was pleased when it was finally recognized as an eating disorder by the American Psychological Association. I've been doing this behavior for decades and decided to go to a clinic for partial hospitalization this October. I've been in therapy for years but an hour in an office hasn't done…

When I lose control I use a low as an excuse to binge. When I feel stronger I go for a juice box. While I carry glucose tabs everywhere the older I get the more my palate and teeth hate them! A limited portion of anything is good for me. Finish the box, wait the veeeeeery looooooong 15 minutes and test again. In the middle…

Hi Diane, It is recommended that Type 1s skip the first phase entirely. Putting your body in ketoacidosis is very dangerous and you should not have to worry about treating your lows. I would say use your glucose tabs and turn that basal rate way down, as you already are. I'm a long-timer too, 41 years. I just returned to…

Below is a link to a forum discussion about this on www.diabetesdaily.com. http://www.diabetesdaily.com/forum/articles-members/15118-why-does-exercise-increase-blood-glucose I also want to recommend a book called "Your…

Hi, I'm Ruth! I started training with a guy on my block. He has me lifting weights in many configurations. But the most amazing thing I lifted and put down was a giant, heavy tire which I had to flip about 12 times. I'm a large woman with a lot of weight to lose, with Juvenile diabetes to boot, but I felt like Superwoman!

There is an awesome store that sells all kinds of fitness wear for large women, even tennis skirts, golf attire, and really good, strong sports bras. The store is www.junonia.com.

Wow! You look great! Thanks for the inspiration; I have 100 pounds to lose and would love to hear about what is working for you. Thanks! Ruth

Kathy, your dog sounds like such a blessing. The instructions I got were: 15/15/15 Which means: eat 15 grams of carb, wait 15 minutes, and test again. Eat another 15 if still low. 4 glucose tabs are 16 grams of carb. If I don't use glucose but use food instead, I will have 500 grams instead of 15!

I think 26 is the lowest I've gone. I hate it when in the middle of the night, when I cant think clearly, I empty out the fridge because I'm starving. True that the CGM will help much of the time. While the beeping is annoying, it does wake me up. Often times I have wondered how it would be to have one of those dogs…
