  • Surgery is seen as the easy way out by those who don't know about it. As you say, weight loss surgery is a tool and you are clearly using your tool well. Congratulations and keeping the great work. I have a gastric lapband and have lost 63kg, something I never achieved with Jenny Craig, weight watchers or anything else.
  • "Oh, I almost didn't recognise you. You've changed your hair." Umm, actually, I've lost 63kg (about 135lb) since the last time you saw me!
  • Simple conversation - "Darling, I am so grateful for your unconditional support but I really need to get healthy so that I can be around a long time to enjoy that support. Would like you like to come for a walk or workout with me?" My husband has been at my side through thick and thin but we are both enjoying the benefits…
  • I've done the safe food handling training here in Australia and I ALWAYS refrigerate my tomato sauce (that's Aussie for ketchup, by the way. :)
  • He doesn't sound like a meanie to me. And by that, I mean that how each of us perceives a situation can be different depending on many things, such as our mind set at the time. Perhaps he is trying to flirt with you in his own clumsy way. If you are interested in him, why not ask him to have a coffee with you so you can…
  • You have so much to deal with that is about other people - your friend/patient, your husband, your kids, expectations of your lecturers etc etc. Now you need to say - this 30 minute window is for me. and that 's when you do your food planning, preparation or exercise. It's tough but you will feel such a huge sense of…
  • You can have excuses or you can have results but you can't have both. Choose carefully.
  • At my first Lions Convention and loving the fact that the Lions jacket I am wearing had gone from being a very tight fit when I bought it to absolutely swimming on me. If it didn't have my name on it, I would have given it away by then.
  • The King, Elvis Presley - For the Good Times.
  • It's the law in Australia but even so, I wouldn't be without mine, no matter where I am riding. I have had three crashes in the last year and all have been solo and at slow speeds. Just wish I had been wearing a helmet when I smacked my head into a very hard surface last week - but I wasn't cycling so hadn't even thought…
  • Keep flashing that lovely smile of yours, be a great friend to people and it will happen. Congratulations on reaching your goal.
  • I am battling that demon right now! I cycled to work this morning, 30km, and was feeling on top of the world. Looked back on where I was before I started this journey and knew that I was now a winner. My self esteem was sky high and nothing could bring me down. Three hours later - just got word that we didn't win a major…
  • Before you know it they will be telling you not to lose any more weight, even though you haven't reached your goal. I managed to silence once cousin by replying that I would stop when I was as slim as she was ( we are similar in height).
  • I prefer to workout before I eat breakfast. If I am cycle commuting to work, I shower and change at work and then eat my bowl of porridge.
  • Congratulations on taking the cycling plunge. Be warned - you are at the top of a very expensive and slippery slope because cycling is so much fun that you will soon suffer from upgraditis, a common condition whereby cyclists feel the irresistible urge to upgrade their bike and associated gear. BTW - I started out where…
  • I am so lucky. My husband prefers to eat healthy and has been a great support in helping me to do the same.
  • My workmate has non-Hodgkins Lymphoma but was diagnosed late due to other health issues. Sadly he is expected to pass away at any moment. My former employee's husband has bowel cancer with secondaries in his lungs - again - not good. And my primary school friend's husband has a blood cancer (not sure of name) and is on…
  • Congratulations. A fantastic achievement!
  • Congratulations. Your wife is a very lucky woman.
  • To fit into my wedding dress again. Almost there - maybe another inch til I can zip it. Started this journey at a tight size 26 - top is now 12- 14, bottom is 14-16 and suddenly I lobe shopping for clothes.
  • I may the lone voice of dissent but....it was the words from my husband that prompted me to adopt a healthy lifestyle and lose (so far) 139lb. He said that he was scared that I would die or become disabled from my weight and he would lose me. I was already on multiple blood pressure tablets and suffering with really bad…
  • Congratulations on your success! The only thing I could take issue with in your whole inspirational story is when you say "It's not as good as what some people can achieve"! BS, it's not! It is so much better than so many people can achieve and you have done it. You have developed a great outlook on life. Enjoy.
  • Depends on the exercise! If I'm dancing then I'm concentrating on the beat, on following my DH's lead (freestyle rock and roll). If it's cycling on my own then it's staying safe and maintaining my cadence, if in a bunch ride then on riding safely with the bunch plus chatting with fellow riders. Swimming - listening to my…
  • My first reaction was that the hunters and gatherers have become more efficient at burning calories because I have to work so much harder now to burn the same amount of calories as I did when I first started losing weight.
  • I only get sore toes, like cramps, when I am wearing the wrong shoes for the activity. For example, I wear a pair of slip on shoes for cycling but if I try to go walking in them, my toes get sore from trying to grip the inside of the shoe, but if I wear my trainers for walking, then they are just fine. Same with my dancing…
  • I'm in a Brooks and Dunn phase at the moment - mostly a nice pace for lap swimming. No music when I'm cycling, for safety and road awareness reasons. Walking - that's usually with my husband so that's talking time. Dancing - 1950s rock and roll. Bring it on!
  • You are clearly a great role model for him. Congratulations.
  • Water, very occasionally an apple or pineapple juice (I really prefer cranberry juice but most places don't serve it!) I just say that I'm the designated driver and no one argues these days. Besides, I can't dance if I've been drinking.
  • After 28 years of marriage, I still have my dress and I'm glad because it is a benchmark of my weight loss over the last 16 months. I can get it on and am only half an inch or less from being able to zip it up again! Reckon I'll break it out for our 30th anniversary when my husband wants to renew our vows.
  • I remember a friend, newly diagnosed with diabetes, learning that over ripe bananas have a higher sugar content that normal or under ripe bananas. It mattered because he was diabetic. Not sure that it really matters for those of us pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy you r bananas!
