Can't get the pic to upload but hopefully you can see it here: http://i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y435/TraceyG1963/traceybike_zps31976895.jpg Here is my new road bike! It's a 2013 Giant Defy 1. I ordered a Defy 2 but my local bike shop upgraded me at no extra cost because they had this one in stock but with a small…

Helping out after floods
There has been widespread flooding across many parts of Central and East Gippsland in Victoria over the past week. Whilst not as devastating as last year's Queensland and New South Wales floods, and fortunately with no loss of life, there are still many Gippsland families who have been hard hit by this week's events. If…

What's your resting heart rate?
I had to attend the ER last week where a nurse taking my obs asked whether I had ever been told I had a low resting heart rate. I hadn't and asked her what it was. after telling me that the 'normal' range was 60-80 beats per minute, she said mine was just 50 bpm! I said that I was fairly fit and she "obviously!"

I came up with the perfect comeback line!
I am sick of people telling me that I shouldn't lose any more weight. I explain (politely) that I am still obese and if they query this, I explain the BMI ratings of healthy, overweight, obese and morbidly obese. But so many still don't get it and still insist that I must not lose any more weight. Well, this weekend I…

NSV at the surgeon's
I had a fill appointment with my surgeon last night. I was the only person in the waiting room when he walked in, called my name, and looked around for me. I stood up and said, "Oh my God, I didn't recognise you!" Damn that felt good! During my appointment he mentioned that he had had an information seminar the night…

Other bike?
Out riding with our usual Sunday morning group this morning and we were chatting about recent rides. I mentioned a particularly challenging ride I had done yesterday, good distance and some super hills. One of the other riders asked which bike I had used for the ride - like I am a REAL cyclist with multiple bikes to choose…

Class ring NSV
My husband went to a school reunion today and was telling me about the old friends and teachers he caught up with. I mentioned that I always have trouble remembering what year I was in each class. then I remembered that I had a high school class ring. We don't have them here in Australia into had been a senior and…

Achieving a cycling goal
My husband and I have discovered a love for cycling and it has become a major part of my weight loss journey. The unexpected side benefit for him has been a significant improvement in his cholesterol levels as he exercises more. We have hooked up with a local group of social riders and I have become involved in the…

NSV - Call me names...
In the last couple of week's I've been called a fitness fanatic, sports freak and other similar names. People think they are being funny and sometime insulting....I take it as a compliment! This morning I got told I had "taken one for the team" as I got back from a relaxed 45km bike ride after a night on the grog! The team…

NSV at bike shop
Popped into my local bike shop today to pick up a headlight and new pedals for my bicycle. Chatting with the owner and out of the blue he says, "Are you finding it easier on the bike now" I replied that I was, to which he said, "Well, I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you've really trimmed down in the last few…

Best TRUE reason for being late to work?
I'm sure most of us have slept through the alarm, had to get changed after the baby threw up on us, had the broken down car etc as reasons for being late for school or work. But what's your best or most unusual reason - it's got to be true! I was late this morning because I was cycling to work and found a cow wandering…

Recognising the warning signs...
I guess it's a good thing that I have been able to recognise the warning signs of impending failure/hiccup/stall before I've done any damage. Staying on course with this whole healthy eating/living thing requires my constant vigilance. So....here are the signs that tell me I am at risk and need to refocus! - Eating less…

Family NSV
Many of my cousins, aunts and uncles live interstate so we don't catch up face to face very often. In fact, it has been 13 months between catch up, unfortunately the last two have been due to family funerals. at yesterday's funeral, one cousin who prides herself on being very fit and fashionable took one look at me and…

NSV at work
It is unseasonably cold this morning and I haven't been able to warm up after my morning walk so I turned on the heater at work. "You just don't have enough body fat any more!" my male office mate declared. I do, as I am still obese, but I still thrilled to hear him say it.

Australia Day - how are you celebrating?
How is everyone celebrating our national day tomorrow? I am helping out at my local Lions Club's Australia Day community breakfast while my DH is at his Rotary Club's Australia Day community breakfast. Then we are heading to Gumbuyah Park with many of our dancing friends to enjoy an afternoon of rock n roll dancing with DJ…

HRM learning lesson
I have an old watch-style HRM that I wear when exercising instead of my nice gold watch. I also have a Body Media Fit armband to measure my calories burnt but because I didn't buy the display unit, I have to plug the BMF into my computer to get the results. So I sometimes just check my heart rate on the old HRM. DH is…

Fancy dress party NSV
My husband and I have a fabulous circle of dancing friends who celebrate special occasions by putting on a dance. Last night they organised a surprise 50th birthday party dance with a Moulin Rouge theme for one of the ladies. After losing 54kg I decided I could dress up with the best of them. Before starting this journey I…

2011 - My Year of Great Change
This time last year I was tearing my wardrobe apart trying to find something, anything that I could wear to a New Year's Eve dance. Nothing fitted. I refused to buy anything new because it was so hard to find anything that fitted. My knees ached. It was hot. I knew I would be the biggest person in the hall and I knew that…

My bravest move yet!
I just ordered a burlesque outfit on ebay to wear to a surprise Moulin rouge party next month! I would never have even considered it 9 months ago but now I am excitedly waiting for my parcel to arrive so I can step it out at the party.

New clothes
OMG I just ordered a burlesque outfit on ebay to wear to a surprise Moulin rouge party next month. I can't believe that I can fit into something like that AND that I am excited about wearing it in public! If this party had been in January this year (2011) I would have worn a pair of black slacks and plain blouse. What a…

Best Christmas NSV
Almost 28years ago I married my dear husband. Over the years I've stacked on the weight big time. This year I said, Enough! I had lapband surgery and I've worked very hard on eating well and exercising. this morning as we dressed to go out for Christmas dinner I decided to try on my going away dress (for the younger folk,…

Why did you choose the lap band?
I can lose weight. I've done it before but I've always put it back on, plus some more. My Dr had suggested that I look into the band a couple of times but it wasn't until my husband said he didn't want to lose me and that maybe I should look into the band that I got serious about it. I'm glad I did. I've lost almost…

I am my healthier self
There is a television advertisement playing in our state at the moment about meeting your healthier self. It's meant to motivate people to improve their health through diet and exercise. I'm not all the way there yet but I have definitely met my healthier self this year! I've gone from 149kg to 98kg (and counting). I can…

One size NSV
Finally, one size does fit all! I have hated those one size fits all (or most) claims for years because they never fitted me. But then I rolled my ankle and needed ongoing support so I bought a neoprene fitted ankle support labelled "One Size Fits All." And this time it did! In fact, it's even slightly too large (but not…

Random NSV
Our dance group had its Christmas dance last night and I was doing the progressive cha cha when I came to dance with a guy I have seen at dances but really don't know at all. In the 60 seconds or so that we danced he asked how much weight I had lost and said how great I looked!

A bit of swagger!
I finally made it back to dancing tonight after missing two weeks due to work commitments. A number of lovely comments on my weight loss had me feeling pretty good, especially as I had cycled 45km to class (it's okay, I showered between bike ride and dancing!) My husband and I hit the floor and after a couple of songs he…

Two NSVs
I am running a conference interstate for work so am working extremely long days in a different time zone and thinking that I must look pretty much as I am feeling i.e. exhausted and ragged. However, upon meeting the hotel function coordinator face to face for the first time after several months of email and phone…
