I agree but not everyone has access to hydrostatic testing or a person that is trained to use callipers accurately; it's better than nothing. When I was in the military we used to use the tape measurement method and it turned out to be accurate within 3 - 5 percent; when compared to callipers.

It may not be 100% accurate but whatever method you use ensure that you recreate the same conditions for each weigh in and use it as a guide line.
