I cook my oats (steel-cut) in water and whole milk (3 c. water/1 c. milk). The milk adds flavor and gives it a nice creamy texture. For a bit more flavor, I toast the oats in a little butter (1/2 tablespoon or so for 1 cup of oats) before adding them to the simmering milk/water mixture. The milk and butter adds about 50…

Usually just a little brown sugar and cinnamon. Saturday I added dried cherries, maple syrup, and cinnamon. That was fantastic.

I think it's more like 10% OUTRAGE, 90% YOU GO. That fact alone caused me to respond in the first place.
-
I think you have me mixed up with someone else. I haven't said anything about male/female in this thread. The person I responded to happened to be woman, but her status as a "female" was immaterial. My comments apply to anyone (including the OP) who feels justified in letting loose on another person for (what I think are)…
-
You know what. You're right. My comments to the woman above (regarding post baby weight loss) were neither loving nor compassionate. My apologies to her and thanks to you for pointing this out. I stand by the Dalai Lama's sentiment, and I do hope that people are actually kinder in real life than they sometimes appear…

I don't see the hypocrisy here. I'm not telling her how she should feel, I'm just surprised she is actually offended by such small potatoes (and that the OP was too). The OP's reaction, and her approval of letting loose in such a way, IMHO, is unjustified. I have no problem with taking the moral high ground in that regard.

Just saw this quote from the Dalai Lama: “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” Many here seem to have a lot of love and compassion for their own feelings and sensibilities. Not so much others', though.

Really? You get "upset"? Because people have a different take on things or make routine (and not very interesting) observations about weigh loss? So if someone doesn't say the approved words about your accomplishment, you have the moral standing to "let loose" on them? Cheez, when did we all become such umbrage-taking…

Again, why does he need validation about "his success"? Can't he just be happy for himself without taking innocuous conversation snippets as personal attacks? And even if her comments were pointed and dismissive, his reaction was so over the top and sitcom-ish that he lost any moral high ground he might have had. I just…

That was not a pointed response. The dude took a nuclear bomb to a knife fight. As someone else said, calling anyone a lazy fat *kitten* is just something you don't do.
-
I don't believe she was asking for advice. I think she was enjoying a piece of cake and perhaps trying to have a conversation in a social setting.
-
Why this assumption she wants to change or that she needs to be put in her place? Why not take the comments as a conversation starter? The OP sounds very proud of his hard work. Why not take the opportunity to fill her in on all the details. And as for the "cake dripping with chocolate" comment, the OP makes it sound like…

. The problem for the OP isn't people talking about his weight. He was happy to accept the compliments of his other family members. It's just that this one family member didn't give him his trophy for his accomplishment ("Good job!") that got his nose out of joint. If I were the host of this event, one of the two people…

Did your doctor's bluntness include telling you to get off your "lazy fat *kitten*"? And really, a grown man has to "defend himself," by name calling no less, against a few words that are, at worst, a bit thoughtless? I mean, honestly. The "men lose weight so easily" meme is such a cliche, I'm surprised he took it so…

Yep, the world is definitely a kinder, better place when everyone speaks their unedited mind.

Another favorite. If I have time, I'll salt the slices first and let them drain in a colander, then rinse off the salt, pat dry, and proceed with cooking (toss with some EVOO and pan sear first side, then saute the rest).

I'll second the roasted root vegetables. Roasted parsnips are amazing--so sweet. They're great with over-easy eggs. Chilled roasted beets are great on salads. Don't know if anyone mentioned sauteed spinach (in EVOO), w/ garlic, lemon juice, sea salt. Also great way to make kale, Swiss chard, and other similar leafy greens.

I like Fage and Chobani, and I also make my own. Any of the yogurts will have more or fewer calories depending on the fat content and whether it has sweeteners. I'm guessing that Fage and Chobani, and most of the other "quality" brands, do not have artificially sweetened versions to bring down the calories. If you get the…

There's fat in honey and agave? Did you mean carbs (or sugars)? Anyway, here's what I understand. The biggest health claim for agave is it's lower glycemic index. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same as honey sugar-wise. One possible knock against it: it's mostly fructose, and supposedly very similar to HFCS. I bought some…

Thought experiment: If the world's population followed the higher protein recommendations (if it were possible, which it's obviously not), what impact would that have on the planet's resources? Thoughts like this are one of the reasons that I can't bring myself to significantly increase my protein levels for optimum…

I went from 158 to 133 in about 3-1/2 months (January 10 to around April 20, this year). Exercise was mostly treadmill running, 90 to 120 minutes a week, with a little 30 Day Shred, exercise bike, and mild weights. Started at 1200 calories, increased to 1350, then 1400, and I generally ate back my exercise calories (200 to…
