  • I'm not sure they're seeking to remove lactose and replace it with artificial sweetener. I think they just want to add the artifical sweetener, along with the chocolate/vanilla/strawberry flavoring, and then call it "reduced calorie (or low calorie) chocolate/vanilla/strawberry milk." The calorie profile would then be…

  • I've seen this in a few places. Not true. IIRC, the background to this is: Some producers apparently want to market a lower calorie flavored milk, using aspertame. The current regulations governing milk do not allow adding artificial sweeteners to any product sold as "milk" (e.g., chocolate milk). To sell your lower…

  • Humans have been drinking cow's milk eons longer than there has been a "dairy industry." I can understand why people drink it: It tastes good and provides a lot of basic nutrition. People around the world drink all kinds of animal milk, not just cow: horse, goat, sheep, camel. It's really a first world luxury to make a…

  • My current weight (133) x 11 = 1463, maybe 100 calories over my BMR. Even if I stopped working out, I would continue to lose on this. Right now, my TDEE is in the 1700-1900 range, by my best guess.

  • Okay, I'm not so interested in coconut oil for its nutritional properties, but this hair thing has me intrigued. So you keep it in your hair overnight and then wash it out? Do you just rinse it out with water? I may have to try this.

  • Glad to hear you had such great success. I got sick right after completing Level 2 Day 1, was laid up for 2 weeks, and haven't gotten back into it. Your post, especially the part about gaining muscle, makes me want to give it another go.

  • Toasted cheese sandwiches! We made them under the broiler. Toast one side of bread until golden brown, flip, add cheese. Toast until cheese is browned. The tomatoes under the cheese are awesome. Haven't made one in years. That's why I love the forums!
  • Your recipe and technique are almost identical to mine, except I start with 1/2 gallon of 1%. To that I add only 1 tablespoon of starter (from my previous batch of yogurt). I don't bother removing any of the milk. The small amount of starter seems to work fine. I also do the oven/light/towels thing for about the same…
  • Hi there. As I noted above, you're only losing about 8% of the milk's total protein if you remove about half of the milk's weight in whey (at least according to my calculations). Most of the protein stays behind.

  • I checked it out from the library last week. The workouts at the back look great, and I think I'm going to follow that program. I'm less wild about the particular form of religion at the front of the book. I get what the author is saying, and there's some useful information, but I think his viewpoint is a bit extreme and…
  • Just want to say, you sound wise beyond your years. I can't believe you're only 19. I think you're well on your way to a balanced, fulfilling life.
  • You're welcome. I just realized I made an error in stating the percentage of protein in the whey versus the strained yogurt. (I just got done calculating the figures on a new batch of yogurt, so I noticed the error.) There's actually a lot less protein in the whey (8%--not 25%) than in the strained yogurt solids (92%--not…
  • My pleasure. I've been eating it for months, and I still look forward to it every day. If you're interested in making the granola, I use Alton Brown's recipe-- http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/granola-recipe/index.html --but I reduce the sugars (brown sugar and maple syrup) by half (3 tablespoons of each).…
  • I make Greek yogurt myself. My understanding is that, when you strain the whey from the yogurt, a small amount of protein goes with they whey while most stays with the yogurt solids (maybe about 75%). That smaller amount of protein in the whey is isolated in making whey protein powder. I think it takes a lot of whey to…
  • I used to eat cereal for my usual breakfast (and often Shredded Wheat), and I can remember having the same issue with stomach rumbling. Since starting MFP, I've switched over to a higher protein breakfast (Greek yogurt and homemade granola). The whole thing comes in at about 350 calories, and I find I can make it to lunch…

  • My parents quit sometime in the late 1970s and they're both still here, at 80 and 77. My mom might have made it this far but definitely not my dad. I love that they've been in good health for the last (almost) 40 years. Good luck!
