So glad to have found this group. I'm getting a slow start towards my 200 mile goal and I have no excuses. The weather's great, foot feels fine, I just can't seem to get back into the routine. Planning on riding 25 tomorrow before work, no excuses. I will wake up early...I will wake up early...I will wake up early... 4/5…

Hi all. New to the thread. Former cyclist trying to get myself back into a routine after taking a longish break rehabbing from foot surgery. Just started doing the short commute to work by bike one or two days/week and hoping to get back into group riding on the weekend. My goal for April is 200 miles. 4/5/16 10.8 miles

Hi guys! I'm Maite from Miami. My usual ride is a Jamis Xenith Comp which I love--I'm easy to please. ;-) I also have an old Giant OCR3 which I use for pub crawls, running errands, and whatnot. And a Trek hybrid that I almost never ride and a Jamis Ventura Comp that I keep around as a loaner. I had foot/calf surgery last…

I sure know that feeling. I lift in my hot and humid garage in Miami. It almost makes me want to go to the gym instead...almost. My gym is crazy-packed at the times when I can get there and I hate crowded, so I tolerate the heat. It'll be nice when "winter" rolls around and it's 88* in there instead of 98*! ;) So far this…

OK, so I'm starting back at this after over a one year hiatus due to an injury and surgery (and perhaps a bit of petulant sulking). I did B Monday, A Wednesday. And here's what I've got to say about it: 1) I forgot how totally awesome SORE AS HELL feels. 2) I think maybe I started too heavy? It's been a loooong time since…

I'm new...again. I had extensive foot, ankle, calf surgery 13months ago and I'm just getting back to semi-normal. I used to be super active but have been more or less sedentary since the surgery. Been back cycling for few months, and I'm starting back on Stronglifts tomorrow, I think at 45lbs for everything to see how it…

That's exactly the point. The OP was using "gay" as a mild pejorative, just as you were in your example above. And since "gay" also means homosexual, his/your usage has come to be recognized as somewhat offensive. If it was simply a poor word choice and not a deliberate offense, he should just own it, apologize, and move…

Thank you! How is this not immediately obvious to anyone reading the OP's post?

My favorite is definitely the Deadlift. I've always had pretty strong legs and back so I feel really comfortable with deadlifts. And least favorite is probably the Overhead Press. My shoulders have always been my trouble area, so I just seem to struggle with these more than with anything else.

I feel your pain with the lbs vs kg thing. And to make it worse, I pieced my weights together from a few craigslist purchases, so some of my plates are marked in lbs and some in kgs. I was confusing the crap out of myself (25 lbs plates + 5 kg plates + 2.5 kg plates = what?) so I finally had to create myself a little cheat…

Starting over...I tore a tendon in my shoulder in November of 2012 and had to stop doing just about EVERYTHING. Before the injury, I was doing lots of running, yoga, Stronglifts, and Krav Maga and it all had to be put on hold while I recovered. It took a long time and a lot of physical therapy, but I think I'm ready to…

Typical Marla: thoughtful, realistic, no BS, no excuses. I'm super-proud of you for putting yourself out there to help people. I know you're going to do great on Tuesday. Just be yourself and it'll be perfect!

I have met a ton of like-minded people who have now become lifelong friends.

Another C25K graduate turned distance runner here. I did C25K about a year and a half ago, progressed to running half marathons pretty regularly, and I'm now just starting to think about doing a full. I was up at 6am yesterday for 11.5 miles, so it seems we were running together. I too have heard that heavy lifting and…

When I was doing multiple warm up sets for each exercise, my workout was taking close to an hour too. And as the weights get heavier, you'll likely need more than 60 sec rest, so it may even take longer. But if you've got the time, take it: do your warm up sets, take plenty of rest, make the most of your workout. I'm…

Haha...these sound just like my excuses! Why do we let ourselves get so off track when being on track feels so great?!?!?

Still trying to figure out how to fit this into my workout schedule without cutting back on other stuff. I had a lot of hectic BS going on the last couple of weeks, so I really slacked off on Stronglifts. I'm back at it though, did 3 SL workouts in the last week. Loving my new (used) squat rack/weights, even though they're…

Looks like you're all doing an amazing job! I can't wait until I can get close to some of the numbers you guys are lifting. Anyway, I'm super excited! I just bought a great (I think) used bench and weight set. I got 250 lbs of plates (between 50lbs and 1.25 lbs), a 30 lb bar, and 2 dumbbell handles. Plus an adjustable…

Sounds pretty active to me! And I just wanted to add, your baby is absolutely adorable!

I would recommend starting Stronglifts now. I'm new to SL, but I've been lifting for a while. I don't do triathlons, but I do a lot of mid/long distance running. I don't really feel like lifting and running negatively impact one another. I might be better (faster or stronger) if I focused exclusively on one or the other,…

I can't stand indoor cardio machines for more than about 10-20 minutes, but I run outdoors 3 times a week (from 4-10 miles/day) and I do CrossFit 2 or 3 times a week. I'm doing SL twice a week for now and I try to do yoga or Pilates on those days. I take 1 full rest day/week, but I really like to eat, so I enjoy having the…

Thanks for the opinions on the Craigslist weights. I went and took a look at them today, but the bar was a bit rustier than I would have liked--much more than it appeared to be in the photo--so I decided to pass. But now I'm thinking I really need to figure out a different way to do this, anyway. I probably shouldn't buy…

I need an opinion. I'm currently working with a cheap set of weights that has 2x25-lb plates, 2x15-lb plates, 2x10-lb plates and a scarily flimsy-looking bar weighing probably 5 lbs. This makes it tough (well, impossible really) to increase on squats and deadlifts every workout because after 80 lbs, my next option is to…

I've only just recently started Stronglifts, but I've been stalking this group for a few weeks. I'm at: Squat 85 Bench 55 Row 75 OH Press 55 Deadlift 85 I'm a runner and a crossfitter, but I started SL5x5 because I've been using running as an excuse to skimp on my lower body strength training. I get crazy-sore after a good…

Is there an ingredient list on the package? Those "formed" chicken breasts that aren't really chicken breast typically have all kinds of fillers, preservatives, flavorings, etc. that could potentially add up to lots of extra calories. Judging from the carb and sodium count, that's probably what's going on. I don't think…

1. Run Half Marathons for the fun of it. 2. Plan vacations around races. 3. Do lots of push ups (and even a couple of pull ups). 4. Splurge without guilt. 5. Anything I put my mind to!

I'm not from Orlando, I'm from Miami, but I'm doing the Savannah RnR half in November too. I did it last year--my first half marathon--with a group of MFP friends from around the country. We had such a great time that we're meeting up in various cities (Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia...) for several more this year and we're…

This is pretty much my thinking on it too. Could I be a better runner without the heavy lifting? Probably, but I'm decent now, and I'm improving on both fronts. And most importantly, I enjoy my workouts. My current schedule: M: Speedwork T: Lifting W: Tempo run Th: Lifting and/or Yoga F: Yoga or Lifting S: Long run Su:…
