  • For something you can make ahead and is good at home or at work I make a muesli. It's basically 2 cups old fashioned oatmeal and 1 cup milk. Add nuts, honey, maple syrup, cinnamon, or dried fruit if you like. I usually add 2 tablespoons honey, about 1/4 cup nuts, and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Mix it all together and put in…
  • I have checked, removing the yolk only removes about 50 calories. The yolk is where the taste is as well as all the nutrients. Definitely eat the whole egg. If you are making an omlet or scrambled eggs, you can always remove part of the yolks but personally, I eag the whole thing.
  • Most fast foods. I see the ads for the "new" sandwich or whatever and it looks and sounds so good. I decide to have one on a "splurge" day and it is always a disappointment. Like someone else said, I like a good hamburger but what can be gotten at the fast food places are just not worth it!
  • When I first started monitoring and trying to control my glucose levels I did get migraines. It lasted about two weeks. I get an occasional headache now but not often and not migraines.
  • My thyroid was removed years ago and it took about a year to stabilize my medication. I can lose weight but I have to really watch my calorie intake. When I am paying attention I do okay but it I stop watching I gain a little back (2 to 3 lbs) then stabilize at that weight. I'm back to keeping my diary and watching what I…
  • Odes--what an insensitive comment. Hopefully when you are old some young snot doesn't treat you that way!
  • Make soup, chili, dip, refried, just about anything you can do with any other bean you can do with black beans.
  • Both are great exercises but running (jogging) puts a lot of stress on your knees. I see people jogging so slowly that I could crawl faster and think that the strain they are putting on their knees surely isn't worth the minimal effort they are putting into their "run". I have seen people powerwalking, which I admit looks…
  • Another good source for information is the American Diabetes Society ( or Foundation). Check to see if there is one in your area, they may be able to direct you to some free or low cost classes and/or medical facilities. If not, check on line there is a lot of information out there, although it can be a bit confusing. This…
  • I have never been a big soda drinker but I have found mixing a little orange juice or lemon juice with plain soda fills the need and is quite inexpesive. You can try other juices as well, those are the two I prefer. The ratio is usually a little less than 1/4 cup juice to 1 can soda. I have tried the carbonated juices and…
  • Great post! I wish more people thought like you and we didn't have the "food police" monitoring every bite everyone takes! It is so much easier to eat healthy and stay healthy if you allow yourself those so called "forbidden" foods occasionally.
  • I know for me when I drink my meals I feel like I haven't "eaten" anything. It's not so much that I am hungry as I miss the chewing part of eating. It sounds like you are getting the nutrients you need and if you are satisfied I see nothing wrong with it.
  • I make up a muesli of 2 cups oatmeal and 1 cup milk. I usually add a tablespoon or two of honey, sometimes some cinnamon, and some chopped nuts. Put it in the refrigerator over night. It makes enough for 5 days. I just scoop some out and add a carton of yogurt. You can also add some fresh fruit if you like. Make it Sunday…
  • Actually those of us with diabetes and really, anyone, is advised to snack. Actually eating 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day rather than 3 large ones has been shown to be more healthy. It depends upon what you are snacking on. If all you are eating are sweets and other junk food, then yes, snacking is not very…
  • My FBG levels were in the mid 80s to low 90s pretty consistantly until about 2 weeks ago. Now they have crept up to the low 100s, usually not over 110. I'm not sure what I am doing differently now that has caused the change. I try to have my dinner by 7:30 at the latest, earlier if possible but my work schedule doesn't…
  • I have been more diligent about avoiding junk food, I have been finding it's not that satisfying and often a disappointment. I do indulge in supposedly "forbidden" foods from time to time but I find I go for quality, not quantity. Example-one really good chocolate instead of a bunch of mediocre chocolates. I am satisfied…
  • Sometimes it's a fear of losing you to someone "better", whatever their definition is of "better". My girlfriend had the same issue with her husband and she told him that he stuck by her when she was over weight and she wouldn't leave him when she's not. You really just need to sit him down and have a talk with him to find…
  • By the way, I HATE to sweat! I found water exercise to be very effective and much more enjoyable than other aerobic exercises. And the great thing about it is you don't feel all sweaty once you are done. I don't swim or that would be a good workout as well.
  • You didn't get where you are overnight and you aren't going to get where you want to be overnight either. Maybe instead of jumping right in with the Jillian Michaels workout you could start with walking, even 5 or 10 minutes a day will help, just gradually increase the distance and amount of time you are walking. As the…
  • My true reason for getting into shape is to reduce the amount of meds I am taking. I have found I am much more successful this time rather than all the times I "tried" to lose weight for other superficial reasons. I have a new husband and a new grandchild that I want to be healthy enough to spend time with both. And I want…
  • I remember reading somewhere that 10lbs is a dress size. I don't know that I have found that to be particularly true. With pants, I try to fit the biggest part, usually the hips then alter the waist. Some people it's the other way around. Sizes vary so much by brand as well, often times better quality clothes run bigger…
  • This question intreged me as I have heard both good and bad with whole eggs. What I have found out is that the yolk contains most of the nutrients in the egg. They were put on the "bad" list many years ago because they also contain high amounts of cholesterol but further studies have shown that eating foods high in…
  • Spring flowers, daffodils, tulips, crocus but my very favorite are lily-of-the-valley.
  • I like to eat it with pineapple or a little Mrs. Dash. Sometimes just a little salt and pepper.
  • The sugar is addicting and so is the caffine. I think many like it because of the fizziness. You can substitute soda (or any fizzy water but not tonic water) with a little juice to get the same affect without all the sugar, caffine, and chemicals. I have heard some have purchased the soda stream and like that better than…
  • So far I have only used hummus as a dip with raw veggies or pita chips. I like the idea of using it on a sandwich instead of mayo or with crackers.
  • I don't see the point fo "eating back" the calories you burned doing exercise. Isn't the point to lose weight? and from what I understand the way to lose weight is to decrease the input and increase the output. If you are "eating back" the calories burned aren't you defeating the purpose of exercising?
  • I want to preface this as my personal opinion and nothing scientific about it. I believe there is no such thing as "bad" food. Denying yourself something you like just creates a craving for that food and creates guilt when you eat it. If you have no health issues to be concerned about and are not gaining weight then I…
  • I always thought of myself as tall--I was 5' 10 1/2" in the 9th grade, but it seems I have shrunk a bit in my "old age", I'm now 5'8". I have found it is much easier to put on the weight being tall, it doesn't show up as fast, and the next thing you know you are 200lb +! I'm 59 years old and recently been put on insulin so…
  • If you have Noosa brand yogurt you might try that. Be aware that each "cup" is actually 2 servings. This might be a local brand but they have some different flavors like strawberry rhubarb. You might also try plain yogurt and add some maple syrup. I know you are looking for "grab and go" but if all else fails, pop to top…
