From what I've read, there is no science behind ice baths aiding recovery, just anecdotal evidence. My long runs haven't yet been above a half marathon so my experience is limited, but I find using my marathon Stick after a long run reduces stiffness/soreness. Otherwise it's just a warm shower, rest and some food.

Focus on the first 13.1 first, you know you can done it, you've done it before! Then it's just 3 more miles. You do 3 miles all the time! No problem. It's all in your head, tell your brain to shut up cos you got this ;-) From what I hear, it doesn't matter so much how fast/slow you run your long training runs, as long as…

I only just saw this thread too, Manchester here!

Treadmills are a different workout, and they can't really compare to running outside. They can also be a lot more mentally challenging. However, there may be times when running outside just isn't sensible. You can also control a lot more on a TM. And, for someone just starting out, they will have nearly as many benefits as…

I love your enthusiasm and excitement, you are going to have such a wonderful experience getting marathon ready and running these darned races! I don't have any advice, certainly not something that can top what has been posted. But I'll say that my running group before I moved was made up almost entirely of retirees, and…

I had the same pain recently, after a 10 mile run left me crippled for 2 days. I took a month off (I tried to take less but the pain kept coming back in milder forms) and it seems to be ok now. The research I did suggested it could be a stress fracture, or a number of other things. Doctor is probably your best bet, you…

I'll see you there, I'm doing the full on the Sunday! I've been reading a lot on the Disney marathon weekend, it appears since this year they more than doubled the number of corrals, so if you're in B rather than A or something don't panic, I think it goes to something like K. The average pace of runners on the Disney…

Wow that board looks amazing! I hadn't even thought of doing anything like that, I have my training schedule on the fridge and a marathon Pinterest board but that's it.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll just have to wait and see on lines, stop for photos when it seems good. Bravo for signing up for Dopey, Andrea! It would be epic, I'd not cope though. Have an amazing time!

A common tip I always follow is choosing stairs over lifts/escalators. It did hurt when trying to navigate the London Underground with steps when available, some of those flights are long! Obviously this is a lot harder for people who live or work on the 72nd floor or something! But you could take the lift to a couple…

I've been wondering this too. Also the weekly mileage for the Hal Higdon plans (I'm also using Novice 2) seems to be a lot lower than I see recommended on this forum.

I struggle enough in 75+ weather! I can only second the suggestion to run early if you can.
-
This is why I love the running community!

Wow, many congratulations, you're a marathoner now and always will be! I loved your story, very inspiring, makes me look forward to mine again!
-
Congratulations, and what an experience! This will be a race to remember for you!

Well done on a race well run! Those last few miles sound worse than usual. Were there a lot fewer people running the full?

Cool ideas for Pokemon themed party games here too: http://www.squidoo.com/Pokemonbirthdaypartygames

I'm not so creative myself, but check out this link, they have some ideas for games, food etc: http://makingmemorieswithyourkids.com/2011/06/pokemon-birthday-party-has-arrived/ Pinterest is always a great place to go for ideas too, it's amazing what people think of.

I got my spellslinger going, I'll start a new class today too for solo play. I'm having a blast! It's just a shame the queues are so long to get on my server, I'm sure that'll soon fix itself.

I've always been a mouth breather. I have heard it isn't as good. I sometimes try breathing through my nose but find I don't seem to get air fast enough. Apparently I just don't know how to breathe right!

We got our accommodation booked! We're staying at the Boardwalk Inn, which is very conveniently located. (I'm being spoiled for Birthday/Christmas by my awesome Mother-in-Law) I wasn't going to go for Race Retreat, I don't know how much I'd use it and I didn't want my supporters to feel they should get Platinum ChEar too.…

Ooh yes, definitely these two! I haven't listened to This Provincial Life outside of the movie, maybe I should give it a go.

I ordered this book last week based on recommendations from people in this group, I'm hoping it will arrive tomorrow. I'm looking forward to trying things out but I'm worried what my husband is going to think about me changing what I cook for us, it's probably going to be a drastic change.

Take some water at every water stop, even if you only take a couple sips. Also running while drinking from a cup of water is hard!
-
In for the advice. I was looking for how to tweak the HH Novice 2 plan to add an extra 20 miler in, since I'll be using this plan for my first marathon in January. I already added an extra week to fit in a local half marathon. Good luck with your training both of you, if either of you wants to add me, please do, even…

Just sometimes I find that drinking lots of water immediately before working out can give me a stitch too. Other than that I don't know what to suggest, for me it's usually eating beforehand. One thing that helps relieve a stitch a little is bending down to touch your toes (or however far you get down). It doesn't get rid…

If you stick to it then I'd say it's better for you. Maybe eventually you can push the speed up a bit so you spend the same amount of time walking but you go a little further. Or if it's possible you can add hills into your walks. Have you tried any different forms of exercising? Mixing it up helps a lot of people too.

Oh yikes, is there a way to contact them and find out?

Basically, if your body is telling you you need water while you're running, take some with you! Also make sure you drink plenty the night before and the morning before your runs. In the UK I never carried water for anything less than 10 miles. Since I moved I'm finding I'm carrying water for 6 miles when it's warm, because…

Play basketball with kids. Or any fast moving sport. I run half marathons, but I cannot seem to keep up with kids' boundless energy when it comes to other sports! I miss that youthful fitness!
