  • What does eating back mean? Ok... I will use general numbers that do not apply to anyone/everyone, but are just for an example: Let's say your target is 1200 and you have eaten 1200, but in exercise you burn 400. If you end your day right there, you have not hit your target of 1200, you only hit 800. This is like…
  • who would dumps spaghetti on wet ramen noodles? shirataki is made for asian dishes, and pasta is made for italian dishes. Your recipe explains everything. italian sauce on ramen is gross, so why would the shirataki be different? does that mean ramen is gross? the bag for the brand you purchased might be labeled as…
  • shirataki noodles have replaced noodles in all the asian recipes in my house. amazing, if you already cook terrific asian-noodle-based dishes. if not, ive seen plenty of people disappointed trying to subtitute them into other noodle-based dishes. you wouldnt use fettucini in Pad See Ew, right? ive read other people's…
  • i am shocked. asian-style noodles are being used for asian recipes, right? i wouldnt use fettucini for Pad See Ew. I assume those who hate shirataki noodles have not found a proper asian recipe to tweak (for example: a healthier version of Pancit Bihon). or they dont much care for asian noodle recipes all together... eh, i…
  • my timing with Sasae used to be bad and i found myself attempting it during times my opponent wasnt off balance enough... they were able to step to regain balance or their foot was still on the ground because i went early. in any case, once i was vulnerable on one leg, they would just direct their weight towards me and we…
  • Calorie management... that was all. I literally did not calculate at anything else. The only thing I noted was that carb-heavy foods seemed to also be calorie-heavy, but I didnt factor any of that into my "math". I didn't overhaul my grocery list. I didn't fear fast food places or restaurants. I only managed my portion…
  • i havent attempted it at all since transitioning to bjj. hmm, i used to love that throw. i might knock the dust off of it..
  • thanks guys! jay214 - in my decent judo experience and little bjj experience, i find that "sode tsurikomi goshi" and "uchi mata" allow me to hip toss my partners, while minimizing the opportunites they have to simply jump on my back when i start a throw. But for starters, foot trips of all kinds (ashi waza) are safer to…
  • exactly how i see it. you can even score on guard pullers/jumpers. considering they give throw-initiators points even if ends up a guard pull situation, i usually cross-ankle pick (for example: my left hand picks their left ankle) as they sit or before they jump. this puts me into side control with takedown points and…
  • Awesome, i envy the experience it will be! quick naga update: i got bronze in nogi and gold in gi this weekend! as another testament to the small bjj world, my finals opponent was also gracie barra. when i shook his coach's hand i mentioned MY professor was Barra. it turns out they trained together and knew each other…
  • NAGA ATLANTA: TERRIFIC WEEKEND! I've done plenty of Judo tourneys and a few small local BJJ tourneys, but this NAGA was my first big show. They bumped me down from Masters 30+ to Adults 18+ with all the beasts, because there arent any old timers in the Flyweight class... but its all good: NoGi, 6mo.-2yrs. experience, Adult…

  • thanks! i bet that clinic will be awesome. i believe Professor Jucao is Gracie Barra lineage. Jucao is the teacher of Fabio Costa, who in turn, promoted Casey Collias (my professor) to black belt. small world!
  • RIGHTEOUS TOPIC! Lets just get all JCVD, Jet Li, Gordon Liu, Jackie, Bruce, and Segal movies out of the way. Those are givens. So for the rest: Choke (rickson gracie documentary) Matrix 2 (that counts right? Matrix 1 = sci fi. Matrix 2 = martial arts. Matrix 3 = CG blockbuster.) Last Dragon (bruce leroy has the golden…
  • i weigh around 135 walking around and <129.9 around competition time... and at my gym (out of the whole lot) there are only two guys my size, two girls who might be bigger than me, and two teens that are smaller than me. the next closest match has me by 30 lbs. ive grown accustomed to rolling with larger partners. i'm…
  • As for technique books, I found that Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro and Guerilla Jiu Jitsu & Submit Everyone (read both back-to-back) by Dave Camarillo were books I kept referring to over and over.
  • Mind Over Muscle: Writings from the Founder of Judo by Jigoro Kano STRONGLY recommended! Professor Kano's views on the relationship of judo and regular every day life, combat/self-defense aspect set aside. A very enlightening NON-martial arts book... that happens to be about a martial art.
  • Lysol Lysol Lysol. and Lysol after each use. you can go industrial and buy the disinfectant for bowling alley shoes, but Lysol has never let me down on any of my de-funking needs.
  • Similar situation. I was teaching traditional jujitsu and judo exclusively... but started bjj again to supplement. now i have devoted most of my training time to it. i want my bjj skills to be on par with my skills in those other two, so it has been my main focus. im getting up there in age and have been more injury-prone…
  • yeah. i was like the second person to join that group, but it never got to even 10 members deep and more than one post. so i figured i would try to hit a larger audience. maybe the community of bjj players is just that small on mfp
  • thats awesome, keep it up! spider guard, huh? so that means you must train with gi... so do i. i recently began using more open guard positions than I ever had before and so far, its working out better for me.
  • I began TKD in 1985 and currently teach its kicking principles to the fighters at my current gym. The roundhouse is the hardest kick to teach to anyone who it doesnt come naturally to. (its also the kick i associate with agility and balance when assessing my fighters' mobility.) I will try to break it down to apply to you,…
  • tkd - 1st deg black (no longer training) judo - brown (presently still training) traditional jujitsu - 1st deg black (presently still teaching) brazilian jiu jitsu - white (recently started training)
  • Anything to help a fellow gi-warrior! (im suprised that there arent as many bjj players in this fitness community). Everyone's nutritional needs are different, so I was just sharing what worked for me. I found that many carb-heavy foods were also calorie-heavy, especially the types you named. Changing it up in preparation…
  • Sounds like a Catch 22 for your goals: Limiting carbs for weight loss and needing carbs for endurance. I dont have any experience with the 4 hour body system, but by strictly calculating calories (vs focusing on carbs) I lost 40 lbs and havent had any negative effects to muscular endurance. I still train judo, japanese…
  • <--- approx. 168 to 131 for Judo and BJJ tournaments. Now I just maintain! (Each progress pic is shown step by step under my Profile > Pictures.)
  • Judo + BJJ has taken my game to the next level! I began with gi-style BJJ, swtiched to no-gi/mma training, began Judo, then went back to gi-style BJJ. Since 2007, I have entered 4 tournaments in played in 5 divisions. I earrned 3 silver and 1 bronze in local BJJ tournaments. The only one I didn't medal in was a Judo…

  • I recommend having the doctor take a look. "Sounds" are not a good sign. While you may not have popped a rib, you may have strained/torn some muscle or tissure in your torso. Healing time vary especially if you insist on staying active or have medical trreatment.
