Yeah I think we said the same thing, but I didn't do as good a job  Another thought is that this is not an exact science - the calculations of BMR, activitiy level, etc. used by MFP (and all other such apps) are based on averages and we all vary to a greater or lesser degree from the average. So some are able to…

Thanks - I fully understand the math, know all of the stock answers and not suggesting that workouts are not valuable. This is about the arguments on MFP about eating back exercise calories. I am suggesting that the argument is not about eating back calories - it's about preventing starvation mode. Also - interested in the…

Stay on the perimiter of the store (produce, meat, dairy). The center is crammed with processed, callorie packed foods.

I have to say that I have not been convinced one way or another on this subject, but I think may be starting to see the light. Take a look at the following which I think shows that too great of a calorie deficit caused a plateau, and then decreasing the deficit broke the plateau. SECTION A I got a lot more serious and made…

Oh - yeah - well I was kinda hoping it would feel like I was being a pig. Just joking - that makes sense. I have a long way to go but it's nice to think about

I find it sad that there is a market for it at all.

From looking at your pic - you kind of resemble her :)
-
Yeah of course that makes sense.

My heroes are the friends I have here on MFP - some have lost 50, 80, 150, 190 pounds and those that are with me working towards those goals.

Here is my current graph. Following Helenium’s pattern, I am now referring to what I record in MFP as “Expected” instead of “Recorded” (cuz it makes more sense) and am only showing “Expected” and “Actual” because all I want is to determine that I can accurately track and predict what my body is doing. As you can see, I hit…

That "Broctoyouby" was a word introducing commercials on TV ("brought to you by")

To continue the movie theme - I love the quote from Shawshank Redemption - "Either get busy living, or get busy dying"
-
LOL that is hillarious!!!! Great stuff!!!

I used an app like this on my Treo phone, and looked for a replacement when I switched to my iPhone. I tried several such apps - some paid and some free - and found MFP to be be much easier for finding foods for entry. And I think that is the most imporant aspect of these apps - nothing worse than sitting at the table…

I am just starting at this relative to your progress, but I did find that as my fitness level increased, it was harder and harder for me to get my heart rate up enough to cause a significant calorie burn. I would use a mode on my recumbent bike that would adjust the resistance based on my heart rate. When my heart rate…

Thanks - I made a business trip every other weekend for a year with that sort of experience. It was depressing and embarassing. It's hard to find words to explain how it felt to see the improvement.

I am further into this book and just want to say again how much I recommend it. It speaks to how our food industry has evolved, and just what it means these days to be "Organic", and how stores like "Whole Foods" fit into the food industry today. It looks at the question of how many calories of energy (oil) does it take to…

I should also say that we now find ourselves shopping only on the perimiters of the store where the produce, meats, dairy are found. The central part of the store has shelves stuffed with processed foods.

We cut $400 per month off our food budget - here are some of the things we did: 1. Made our own - instead of buying preprocessed breakfast bars - we bought the ingredients and our own. Same for dog treats. 2. Stock up on frozen veggies, and meats on sale. Then, you have enough on hand so you can wait for the next sale. 3.…

I'm gonna see if I can find an FTP site somewhere that we can share our spreadsheets. In the meantime I would be happy to send mine via email if you want to send me an email address via the MFP message system. Cool stuff!!!!!

I researched them and decided to go with the Polar FT4 with the docking station to load the data to the computer. It works great for me. I also tried the cheap 60beat device that plugs into the ear phone jack of my iphone to pick up my HRM strap. It worked when my phone was close to me, but when I set it down It really…

Naw I am just a very technical person and love to understand everything "under the hood". It's a blessing and a curse  but I am sensible enough to not "miss the forrest for the trees". So in effect, the concern about burning muscle is more for those with less fat to lose?
-
Yes, that is a good point. But what about the heart? Is that a danger?
-
Well, I gotta trust someone that has demonstrated this much success. But this is not something mentioned in all that I have read but maybe I was just taking it too literally. Like I said, I am not letting up on the pedal - my fitness is the best now at 47 than it has been since my teen years even though I still have a lot…

Please help me understand better - losing some muscle is a given?
-
If you read the thread I mentioned you would see that I am not slowing down. But the data shows that I should be eating another 2200 calories per day given my rate of loss and I am not prepared to do that. On the other had, I don't want to burn muscle either.
-
Everything I read says that excess ketones are created when fat is burned, and those ketones are detectable in the urine and measurable by the strips.

Wow!! 188 pounds lost speaks for a lot! Can any conclusions be drawn from a "moderate" reading?
