Drink half body weight in ounces?????
I just read on another post that people should drink half their body weight in ounces?? There is NO way I can drink that much water in a day! That's 145 ounces - 18+ cups - I would have to fill my 24 ounce water bottle 6 times. I might as well just sit in the bathroom if I do that. I would love to hear from others with…

Return to resting heart rate after workout.
My resting heart rate tends to be low - 65-69. During about a 15 minute workout it can average 125-130 and sometimes hit 140-160. Then, a 30-60 seconds after completing workout it goes back to about 85-90. This all sounds good to me (I like the quick recovery), but I wonder how long until I should expect to be back at my…

Excel formuals to compute BMR & adjust HRM exercise calories
As many know, heart rate monitors counts ALL caloires burned during workouts, which includes BMR calories. Those calories would be double counted in MFP, because MFP counts them as burned as part of BMR, and, if entered into MFP, would be counted as burned as part exercise. So I created an Excel speadsheet that would…

I highly recommend this book: The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals I am part way through it, and what an eye opener about our food system!

Does HRM calorie count include BMR?
When my FT7 tells me how many calories I have burned, does that include what my BMR calories would be during that time of day? If it does, then that sucks because some of the calories burned I have been entering into MFP have been double counted as both burned during exercise and as part of my BMR. Then that leads me to…

Effect of fitness on glaucoma?
I went to my eye dr for a six month follow up. Previously, my eye pressure was on the borderline of being diagnosed with glaucoma (like 16 or 16). Now, the pressure has dropped to 6-7! Between appointments, I have lost 50 pounds and have dramatically improved my diet and fitness level. Could this have have had such a…

Anyone use a "Perfect Pickler"?
We went to a canning class with our CSA at an AG extension office and learned about something called the "Perfect Pickler". Anyone have any experience with this?

Desiderata
A recent post by a friend made me want to share this with here and I wanted to put it out there for everyone. A teacher had posted this in his class when I was in high school and it made a huge impact on me my entire life. It is so appropriate for those of us in on our weight loss journeys. There is a bit of interesting…

Consider the big picture
At one point (think 30's - 50's), families spent a large percentage of their time, money and energy in growing, storing, and preparing wholesome foods. Science and technology found ways to create lower cost, prepackaged foods. People went for it because it reduced the cost and time required to feed their families. Earl…

Ice cream replacement
Simply mulch the following in a blender and freeze it. Amazingly simple and effective replacement for ice cream. Or, don't freeze it - makes a great dish with a yogurt like consistency. 1 banana 1/3 cup strawberries 1/3 cup blue berries 1/3 cup grapes It's yummy! (my loving wife makes this for me )

Analysis of the past month (including charts and data)
Here is a comparison of what I planned to burn, what my recordings said I burned, and what I actually burned based on the weight I lost. I GLADLY welcome and appreciate any observations, recommendations, etc. My first goal is to get the “Recorded” and “Actual” lines to match as closely as possible. While it is encouraging…

Help with body fat percentage calculations
Ok - this is a stupid question but it has continued to elude me. I read this example froma post: Jim weighs 170 lbs with 20% body fat. Mark weighs 175 lbs (5 lbs more) at 10% body fat. This means Jim has 11 lbs of fat on him, while Mark — even at the higher weight — carries only 5.5 lbs of fat. And I read this from…

Best nuts?
I am trying to keep my calorie intake closer to my targets and have started eating peanuts when I need to gain calories at the end of the day. Are peanuts the way to go, or is some other nut better?

Why exercise if you eat back the calories?
I don't really think the issue is about eating back your calories - it's really about eating enough to keep your body from going into starvation/famine mode. I think you do have to figure in your exercise calories to determine if you are eating enough. You have to find the "sweet spot" of a calorie deficit that burns fat,…

How can you NOT feel better
I have known a couple of people who lost a LOT of weight - over a hundred pounds yet they say the they do not feel any different. I just don't know how that can be. Is there just a different definition of the word "feel"? I have lost 40 pounds and I feel SO much better.

In the airport I saw a group of Sr. citizens...
My wife and I were traveling home this morning and saw a group of sr. citizens traveling together on vacation. I would guess they where in their seventies. They were cheerful, healthy, trim, and obviously took care of their fitness. I observed they had great mobility, flexiiblty and range of motion. Though we never spoke…

Airplane seat NSV
I rode on a plane this weekend for the first time in a few years. At one time in the past, it would take everything I had to get the seat belt fastened. Push myself back into the seat, suck in my prodigious gut, pull the seat belt as hard as I could to stretch it and wind myself trying to get it buckled. Here is what it…

Using Ketone Test Strips to detect fat vs. muscle burn
I just read that I can use ketone test strips to detect if I am burning fat vs. muscle. So I went to the drugstore and for about $12 bucks picked up a box. After peeing on one, it shows that I am ineed in the "moderate" level for ketones. This almost seems like a best kept secret in weight loss to know if it is being done…

MFP nutrient counts don't add up to the calories
There are 4 calories per gram of protien and carb, and 9 per gram of fat. Based on what is currently in my MFP nutrition right now, here are the counts and expected calories Fat 66g 594 Carbs 47g 588 Protien 41g 164 That adds up to 1346 calories. But my MFP diary says my current calorie count is 1210. So.... either the…

Then, when I wake up in…

Count sugar from fruits?
I recently saw that some ignore the sugar they consume from fruit in what they record in MFP in relation to their nutrition targets. Does sugar from fruit not have the same affect on your body as processed sugars? Also, how do you "ignore" it - just subtract it out in your head?

HRM calories during strength training
