Yep. $100 is probably on the low end. As an alternative, you can always get a smartphone app like RunKeeper. Carry your phone on your runs in an armband or belt and it will tell you your distance and pace (through the headphones) every X interval (ex. every 2 minutes or every 1/4 mile).

I'm a fairly new runner as well (started in January) and I'm being moderately cautious with bumping up my race distance. I've already run 3 5Ks and one 10K. My next big race is a 10 miler in October though I have some 5K's and another 10K scheduled before then. My plan is to run my first half next February and my first…

I haven't done that one, but I did his predictor workouts for the 10K (final one being 3 x 2 miles at Goal Pace) and I actually ended up exceeding my goal.

33 yo, 6'1", 200 lbs. I did an easy 7 miles last Friday. 10 minute miles. Average HR of 139. 1,085 calories burned including a 10 minutes total of walking during warm up and cool down. The Saturday before that I did 7 miles at about a 10:45 pace. Average HR of 131. 1,026 calories burned. So I guess it's somewhere around 7…

Ran another 5K this morning (my 3rd) in 24:43. A 2 1/2 minute improvement over my last 5K five weeks ago.

That's normal. People run 10K's at a slower pace than they do 5K's, and marathons slower than they do half marathons. It depends on what your goals are from running, but generally speaking, the more miles you run (within reason) the better. And in order to run more miles, you have to slow down. You can't go out and run at…

Not a 5K, but I ran my first 10K today in the Pearland (TX) Pear Run (I don't think we live very far from each other ZenInTexas). Finished in 54:56 which is faster than my first two 5K's combined. Beat my goal time by over a minute and a half. 3/29 - Bellaire Trolley Run 5K - 28:08 4/27 - Run For Wellness Katy 5K - 27:11…

I ran my 2nd 5K last Sunday. My first, 4 weeks prior, was in 28:08. This one was in 27:12. And that was after a night of virtually no sleep. I'm a professional musician and and was working an out of town wedding. Gig finished at 1AM. Didn't finish packing and leaving until after 3. Home around 4:30. Got maybe half an hour…

This is what I was thinking. If you try to do too much, you risk your body fighting to hold on to your fat/energy stores. If you're not dropping the kind of weight you think you should when you factor in your diet and exercise, it could mean that your metabolism has slowed down to compensate for the deficit which makes the…

In terms of cardiovascular health, it's better to be overweight and in shape than a normal weight and out of shape.

The way I see it, a HRM is better at keeping track of how much work you're actually doing during a workout. But a FitBit is more convenient (though less accurate) for keeping track of what you do in your normal everyday routine because you probably don't want to be wearing a chest strap all day, especially after a workout…

It's important to remember that all these calorie calculators are only estimates. Your maintenance calories (and thus how much you need to eat to lose weight) may not be what you think they are. Or maybe your dieting has caused your metabolism to slow to the point where what used to be a deficit is no longer a deficit. For…

I agree with "Don't Drink Your Calories". If you simply replace your liquid calories with food (same number of calories), you're going to feel more full. The same goes with junk food/snacks. Replace those calories meat and vegetables and you're going to be less hungry. When I started dieting, I cut out all the fast food,…

Where were your calories before? If they were too low, your body could've compensated and slowed down your metabolism, balancing out your calorie deficit. It basically takes whatever your dieting calorie intake is and makes that your maintenance level instead, meaning that you're no longer operating at a deficit. The body…

I agree with the above.

Ran my first race this morning and finished in 28:12. It was a little harder than I expected so I fell a little short of my optimistic goal. But I think things went well overall and now I have a benchmark to work from.

Try it. See how you do. If you need to adjust the pace, do so. If you think your last race was a fluke and aren't comfortable with those paces, feel free to use your previous PR and gradually increase it from there. And if you put your previous PR (around 29:30?) for the first time and the 28:18 as the goal time, it will…

I started running around the end of January and I'm running my first 5K on Saturday. My main goal in running is mostly weight loss at this point. The only time I've really successfully lost weight was when I was running, but back then I didn't really know how to train and I also wasn't wearing the right shoes and ended up…

The first time I bought running shoes, they told me I overpronate (I think most people do to a degree) and put me in some stability shoes. It work OK for awhile but as I built up my distance, I started getting blisters on my arches. I went back (saw another salesman) and they told me that yes, I overpronate, but I didn't…

I'm 6'1" and as of today, 222 lbs. Though I was technically obese, I never looked it. I have broad shoulders and a big chest and when wearing a t-shirt I actually looked more fit and muscular than I really was. Now, through 5 1/2 weeks of P90X, I look really good from the chest up and fantastic from the waist down (my legs…

Pretty close to what it would be to maintain my body weight without exercise. At 225 lbs my calorie intake to maintain that weight would be roughly 2,700 a day. When I started P90X, I really didn't keep track of my calories. I cut out the fast food (I'd gotten somewhat addicted to it, which is how I gained so much weight),…

P90X is good about giving you options. If you need to take breaks, push pause and take a break. If you can't keep up with the people on the video, don't worry about it. If you need to modify the move, then modify it and they'll usually show you how. Start off doing what you can do and you'll improve over time. Plyo X is…

If you have wrist issues, you can always try using push up bars.

I'm in my 6th week of P90X Classic (Day 38). This is my first time attempting a program like this. I'm 6'1" and started off at 225 lbs. I'd been this size before, maxing out at 227/228. I'd gotten down to 190 by running 3 times a week, doing very basic push up and sit up routines, and calorie cycling. But I lost focus,…

Big Game of Thrones fan. I started reading the books after the first season. I'm a slow reader (and have read a few other books in between) so I'm still only a little over 400 pages into A Dance With Dragons. Those are some long *kitten* books. I watch The Walking Dead as well. I'm really enjoying the the third season. The…

Resistance bands are fairly cheap and most exercises that you do with weights, you can do with bands.
