  • Yup - my downfall is both salts & sweets. So things like french fries, chips, and cookies, ice cream. And Fast Foods. But if I had to choose, I've probably picked out the most on ice cream. When I'm being bad, I can finish an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream which about 1,000 calories. Not kidding.
  • It used to be 60, but when I started running long distances, it dropped. Now it ranges consistently from high 40s to low 50s.
  • Thanks for starting this group! Yes - I use Hal Hidon's training schedule. I have a three year old daughter and work full time, so right now - I run 3 times a week. Four times, if I'm lucky. Mileage ranges anywhere from 3 to 4 miles a run. I go to the gym (once or twice a week) only because my 24 Hour Fitness has an…
  • Your first half - how exciting! I've signed up for the See Jane Half in Alameda, CA on June 8th. This will be my 6th half.
  • I agree with ValerieMomof2. It's about YOUR comfort level. Don't even worry if you're slower than other runners. I ran my first half marathon in 2:06 which was a 9:36 pace. During the entire race, I was completely stressed out because I was so focused on finishing fast, non-stop with no breaks. And I remember I was zooming…
  • I've done 5 half marathons in the last 5 years and in one of those years, I ran two in the same year. I don't think I would ever do that again. because it felt like there was no down time in between the two. So, I like doing at least one half a year. I always allow 3 good months to train for a half marathon. I've only done…
  • If you can find a good trainer at a gym, the skin fold caliper is the cheapest way to go. Although, it needs to be done by a person who knows how to do it correctly. If not done right, it can lead to inaccurate results. I've only tried two methods, which were pricey, but yields the most accurate results. DEXA Scan ($85 in…
  • The only GPS watch I've owned is the Garmin 405 (with heart rate). I bought it when I became serious about training for half marathons 5 years ago and it was very pricey back then (around $350). I used to use the heart rate (all the time) when I first got it. Now, when I run - I only use the GPS and use the heart rate…
  • I have ran my share of half marathons and wore my iPod every time, but the races I ran did not have head phone restrictions. I also do my training runs with music and use it at the gym. I can't imagine working out without one! Especially if the run or workout is longer than an hour. I have done runs without music and…
  • I have a three year daughter and a full time job as a teacher, so I totally know where you're coming from. So, with juggling between preschool drop off and going to work, finding time to work out is VERY hard. If I'm disciplined enough to get up early (which I prefer), I like to get up early and go for a run from 6:00 am…
  • Hi there! I'm 5 feet tall and gained 20 pounds in the last 8 months! I went from running half marathons to sitting on the couch, and letting myself go with chips and ice cream. You can say i really "fell off the wagon." My goal is to get back to 118 - 120 and lose the 20 pounds in the next 4 months. I just joined MFP…
  • On super heavy flow days, I use Tampax Pearl Super. I tried running with a very thin pad and it felt uncomfortable the whole time.
  • I agree with the others that it depends on the individual and how you differentiate jogging and running . For me, if I go on a run, do it slow, and incorporate walk breaks - I definitely consider that jogging. But if I can run non-stop at a 10 - 11 minute mile pace, then I'm running. Also, I consider distance. I've done a…
  • Yes - people in their cars that are totally unaware of runners/joggers. Also, I hate when my iPod runs out of battery life during the early portion of your run.
