great job!

Water over 2 hours, gel flask over 2.5 hours.

For a 5k, I just set it up so I can see the heart rate...no pace info at all. I try get it to Z4 and keep it there. But, I suppose that could be another kind of obsessing.

I don't think this was mentioned...calibration of treadmills is usually pretty bad. So, it's possible the 10k treadmill time wasn't actually 10K. And, as the other mentioned, it's generally easier to run on a TM, if not a little boring. I only run on them when it's not safe to run outside (lightning, ice, etc.) Sometimes…

i am glad I don't like being fussy.

When I get done marathoning, I'll be focusing on triathlon events. I like the variation and the upper body strength I was getting from swimming (even though I apparently suck at swimming!). I have a marathon in few weeks, and my plan once that is done is to do what Carson mentioned; lower my weekly mileage to 30 to 40 a…

this..for very long runs, you can bring along a few gels or your favorite running fuel. also, for a reduced noise level, I would recommend you check out the long distance running group..

I have hr strap tan lines...true story. Getting close to the end of the season for that, though. I always wear a shirt when racing, though. It doesn't seem right to not have shirt on then.

slightly off topic, but the men's locker room in the local Y is the most disgusting collection of naked men you have ever seen. They apparently have no idea what a towel and shower shoes are for. Some of them stand, completely naked and barefoot, at the sink to shave, etc. Some things cannot be unseen! And, to bring it…

I agree...I have bq'ing on the brain, but I look forward to getting it done, so I can focus on shorter, more intense racing.

I have a marathon in November and then my next race is a 5K that I have run for the past two new years day. To be honest, I am looking forward to the 5k as much as the marathon. There is a special level of pain that goes along with the 5k. It's kind of surreal.

good posting 100% food / 0% exercise as far as weight loss goes.

9/13 Gulf Beach Half Marathon (tune up race): 1:49:03 This is a PR, but more importantly, I accomplished my goal of marathon pace practice, and also used the gear I plan on using for a November marathon. The gear thing was a good choice, because I found a chafe spot that I have not had in training runs. I also put some…

in to have this on my timeline... When I was in the basic training, we had no stalls. The "bathroom" was also the laundry room and there was a shower room just to the side, which had pipe going across with 4 shower heads attached (also no stalls). So, yeah, I can pretty much poop anywhere.

oh man, I just clicked on the archive...yeah, that's a time black hole waiting to happen! funny stuff!

that was good! I don't get ultra's at all..for now. :)

Humans have one of the most efficient cooling systems in the animal world. But, it's achilles heel is humidity. Sweat that doesn't evaporate (thereby cooling us) causes us to heat up. It does seem very strange that you are having brown urine with all that water. Perhaps some medical attention is warranted.

um yeah...way too much water! I have notice that since I started taking slo-mag, my calves are much less twitchy. Whether this translates to not getting cramps in the late miles of a marathon is to be determined. Anyway, the usual recommendation is to drink only when thirsty. You may want to give that a shot.

^^this and yes, you can get fitter by slowing down..in fact, it's pretty much a necessity if you are going to run any sort of mileage.

The idea is to fat load for 10 days, and carb load for 3 days, right before the race, so it isn't something you would do in the middle of training. There is some research that suggests that 5 days fat loading / 1 day carb loading may accomplish the same thing. It's all very sketchy and the actual advantage gained may be…

I have done it once, and will do so for my next marathon. That's a toughie without the dairy. 65 percent is a lot of fat. I actually lost a few lbs while doing it. Go figure. Anyway, I just ate a lot of extra nut butters, salad dressings, etc. Be prepared for a pretty serious loss of energy and a little crankiness. I was…

in for the knowledge.. I plan on doing this (strong lifts) over the winter, when I am not targeting a race. I can't imagine lifting heavy (especially squats) and also trying to run longer mileage weeks at the same time.

yup...this describes me to a T (accept for the all minimalist part, but I think I am headed in that direction)! I also make a point to occasionally run on sidewalks that I know are uneven, to give my stabilizer muscles a good workout, as well as the (very) occasional trail run . I believe there is a lot of merit to the…

I have at least 10 pair, from very cushioned (altra torin, which I actually hate, but run in from time to time) to very minimalist (merrell vapor). I like to mix up the stress on my legs. My main shoe is the Saucony Virrata (zero drop, cushioned) which I use across all distances. I have 4 pair of those, with various…

slow down... :o) Also, most runners learn to run fasted or at least without eating or drinking much prior to going out. I personally don't eat or drink anything for an hour or two before I run, unless it's a cup of coffee first thing. For runs over two hours, I bring along a couple gels and some water, but some runners go…

+1 on the petzl..I love mine! I also have used a vest from time to time.

hmm..as a RI native, I might have to defriend you after that remark! jk...sort of. :) My favorite 5k is actually in my hometown of Warwick, in the really awesome and super great state of RI. It's the Gaspee Days 5k. They run it right before a parade. It's interesting, because the assembled masses aren't really running…

Oh, I agree with that completely, Ken. I have met so many people over the years that really seem to believe the stories they make up. It's like any other addictive type behavior...it just feeds on itself until eventually it becomes reality.

A sad story, for sure... the road to hell, and all. It's good example of how a small deceit can snow ball into something much worse. It's easy (for me, at least) to see him as something of a sympathetic figure, until I think of the guys that got deprived of their day in the sun because of this. Months of training snatched…
