  • Running "...doesn't require much strength at all." That's just laughable. I bought the pic I am using as my profile pic to remind me to work on improving my core strength. It was taken at the finish line of a half marathon and I was pretty smoked. If I was stronger, I would have finished with a better time. Maintaining…
  • What a sad thread... To the OP: no, the running you are talking about will not cause your thigh muscles to disappear. Whenever this topic shows, out comes the pic of some elite Kenyan with very low bodyfat and that becomes the standard. That type of body requires way beyond anything you or I will put ourselves through.…
  • I never met an alcohol I didn't like. Except vodka. Vodka is evil. what was the topic again? oh, never mind...
  • In for the smack talk and to see if donuts are the new miracle running fuel!
  • I hear ya'. I wish we would put half of the energy we spend on worrying about Monsanto to holding producers feet to the fire on this,
  • "Your best bet is to go organic *where practical for your budget* and where possible to tighten regulations on the use of these chemicals on crops. (At the moment it is essentially a free-for-all for profiteers). " Absolutely spot on. People should be more concerned about this than the GMO bogeyman. I tend to choose…
  • wow, I think you really hit the nail on the head with that last comment. I have two thoughts about GMO crops: 1. If folks want them labeled, they should be labeled. End of story. 2. GMO is a breeding technique, plain and simple. I personally am against it, because we just don't know all the consequences in the environment.…
  • This is where the fancy (read: expensive!) gps watches come in handy. The higher end garmin watches allow you to upload complex and not so complex workouts. The lower end ones will do basic intervals. I liken it to having a coach stand there with a watch, counting intervals and keeping an eye on the clock. The watch beeps:…
  • I have only run one half, but I just ate a normal meal (think "clean" eating, low fat, high carb, nothing raw), making sure I ate it before 6 pm. I highly recommend Matt Fitzgerald's book "New Rules of Marathon and Half - Marathon Nutrition". He lays everything out for the runner to follow.
  • Slow down...really, that's it. One technique I use is to make sure I run a negative split for every run, especially the long run. That means I start out the first half with intention of having enough energy to run the second half a little quicker. A gps watch helps with this, but it isn't necessary. Monitor your breath and…
  • is it a soft strap? I have a wahoo and barely notice it
  • Thanks Dave...I'll have to dig mine out. I run early enough to run down the crown of the road for most of my runs. Ironically, that's where many of the older roads crack and holes develop. And, I agree, those little dips can be troublesome. For me the issue is the worst when I am trying to maintain a pace and I run into a…
  • ^^this Personally, I have found most supplements to be worthless without following the above advice. Move more, eat less...and save your money. :o)
  • i keep a petzl in my hikiing backpack and have thought about breaking it out for running. My main concern is potholes and cracks in the roads, although most of the routes i run have streetlights here an there. My question would be if there is anyone has tried attaching the light to the waist, instead of the head. I know…
  • This just came in my e-mail today: http://www.runningtechniquetips.com/2013/10/do-calf-raises-prevent-calf-injuries-in-running/ I haven't read it yet, but Martin is usually spot on...
  • If you would like to have lot of your pre-conceptions about running blown up, read Noakes. The Lore of Running is really amazing. It's probably worth noting that while we (human beings) think we have everything figured out, in the end, we know very little. Before I started this little MFP journey, I thought I knew a lot…
  • check out vegweb.com :o)
  • Teddie Super Chunky is the bomb diggity! (too lazy to post a pic)
  • 60/20/20 - I am usually a bit over on fat and protein. I don't sweat it too much.
  • hmm....I can't figure that part out..it returns zero rivals.
  • Hartford Half Marathon (CT, USA) first half - 1:51:11
  • I thought "thermogenic" supplements would help... Ironically, it never occurred to me to eat less, much less starve myself
  • sit still and be very quiet for three minutes...it's a long time!!! lol! When Bannister broke four minutes, that standard was broken a number of times within the first year. I wonder how much of the 2 hour mark is psychological. When I was finishing my half this weekend, the elites were running by after finishing their…
  • I use the same program, so unless you using too fast of a reference pace, or really going super hard on the cross training, then my guess is that it was an isolated bad run. Maybe it would be helpful to go over what you ate that day, to see if it was food related (wrong food or not enough food). If it continues to happen,…
  • depends on your goal... If you are trying to finish, then I wouldn't change anything (nothing new on race day!) If you are not used to ingesting a reasonable amount of carbs, then there is no sense in trying to see if you can on race day. I do think a good rule of thumb is to stop eating eating and drinking 2 hours before…
  • it's kind of hard of to say anything intelligent without knowing your weekly schedule, but sometimes, a bad run just happens. It if becomes a trend, then you may have to make some adjustments
  • erratic hrm readings are strap issues, not watch issues. I get spikes from time to time, which I believe are related to the strap sliding around or not being wet enough. I use a wahoo strap, which I generally satisfied with. just my 2 cents...I could be wrong :o)
  • that's pretty slick! http://athlinks.com/racer/159796865
  • So cool! I have felt the tug of the triathlon, but my immediate goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Have fun in your race!!
  • wow, look at all these races!! Hartford (CT, USA) Half tomorrow (9/12)! I will run a PR, because it's my first half. :o) Kind of a twisty route, with typical New England up and downs: http://www.hartfordmarathon.com/Assets/Hartford+Marathon/Maps+-+Mararthon/Map_2013HM_Half0828.pdf Anything under 2 hours will be fine,…
