At the risk of having a ton of judgmental comments rain down on me, we're doing the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension) Diet because my husband's doctor recommended it to him. I'm participating partly in a show of support and partly out of self-preservation. The doctor recommended DASH because my husband's…

No, you're not alone. I've been doing tri for several years and got serious about the weight last November. The first 9 came off relatively quickly, but I've been stuck on a plateau since the end of December. I'm trying to hang in there. I've got about 12 left to go and just cannot nudge that scale. It stays in the same 3…

I'm way more successful when I take the time and trouble to weigh and measure everything.

I won't have time if I don't exercise before work. Something always happens that keeps me late at the office and then when I get home there's no time for working out and dinner and family. When something has to give after work, it's always the workout. But if I get up at 4 and hit the road by 5, there's nothing to stop me…

It will take a few weeks. You're really lucky to live in a hilly area. Be sure to get at least one rest day a week and mix up your workouts with easy, moderate, and hard rides. I just finished a 12-week program from the book "Ride Your Way Lean". It helped me break a long-standing plateau and the workouts really helped…

Sit ups/crunches, push ups, bridges, squats, lunges, and "superman" should work great. Planks are good, too. You don't even need weights. If you aren't sure how to do the moves properly or are looking for variations, search YouTube.

I pop oatmeal in the microwave and add 1 or 2 tbsp of maple syrup and 1 or 2 tbsp of walnuts. Greek yogurt with 1 tbsp honey and 2 tbsp walnuts is also quick and easy. On light workout days I just have rye toast with a little butter (1 tsp) and maybe some fruit. Berries are quick and easy to transport. You can mix up a…

Good luck! I did my first race about five or six years ago and I was hooked! I'm still debating this year's race schedule, but am signed up for an International dx race in November. I just need to figure out which other races and how many between now and November. I'll be happy to join you as you work toward this goal.

You do need one with a chest strap. They are not uncomfortable. I put mine under the band of my bra and the bra helps hold it in place. The strap does need to be snug (not constricting, just snugly against your skin) or you won't get a reading. Polar HRMs seem to have the most vocal/largest number of proponents on MFP. The…

Enell is generally considered the gold standard. I've had good luck with the Champion bras, but they run on the small side for those of us with an ample bust.

I did it. Love the program. I still am not fond of running, but it helped me establish the foundation that let me run a half marathon last year.

I use a lot of different recipes. The easiest thing to do is to cube the tofu and put it in with veggies in a stir-fry or cube it and add it to a soup. Not sure what's going on with the crumbling. Check what you're buying. If it's silken tofu, I only use that in sauces and recipes that have a mousse-like consistency. You…

I did couch to 5K several years ago to get started running. I love it and have recommended it to others who were also very pleased with it. Good luck!

You might check out the Daniels tables. If you Google "Daniels tables running" (without quotes) you'll get links to free downloadable spreadsheets. The spreadsheets require you to enter current height, weight, and pace info and then calculate various training and race paces for popular distances. HTH.

I get up at 4 and hit the road by 5, either running or on my bike. That lets me get in a swim practice at 7 three days a week and still get to work by 9. I decided a few years ago that I had to workout at a crazy early time because something *always* happens at work to keep me there late and preventing me from exercising…

That is fantastic! Congratulations! I'm very happy for you.

I do an official check in/weigh in only once a week. I weigh every day to make sure I'm on track. I agree with the other posters here who've said that it reminds me that this is a lifestyle change and helps me tune in to a trend in either direction. I was just telling my husband last night that for the last two or three…

I don't recommend layering to make yourself sweat more. That can cause dehydration, which is really miserable and could at best make you not want to work out and at worst could cause serious illness. Just wear as much as you need to keep from getting hypothermia (if that's an issue where you live). And if you are going to…

Compared to my HRM, the MFP readings are 30 - 70% higher. For example, I did a bike ride this morning at a low heart rate (recovery intensity) and my HRM says 726 calories. MFP, before I adjusted it, put the same length/speed of ride at 1296 calories. If I went by MFP and added my exercise calories to my daily eating, I'd…

I've been using an HRM for many years. As other posters have said, it's much better to use a monitor with a chest strap transmitter. I started with an Omron and I see that they have them on Amazon for less than $40. Having said that, I agree with the poster who suggested that you should spend a little extra on something a…

Someone else on MFP recommended Podrunner podcasts some time back. http://www.djsteveboy.com/podrunner.html It's not the kind of music I would ever listen to just sitting around, but I can select the pace and it helps me hold a challenging and steady tempo. They have podcasts with slower tempos for walking and quicker ones…

Good for you! I've had the same experience. i was on a plateau for months. Replaced my worn out HRM with one that measures calories, too, and discovered that the MFP exercise calories are often way over what my HRM calculates. No wonder I was on a plateau! This morning I biked for more than two hours. MFP calculated that…

I'd love to get a pair! Which ones did you get? Are you running in them? What type of shoes were you wearing before?

I use a Suunto T6. I used to have a Suunto T3c. They are both most assuredly waterproof, but the signal does NOT transmit in water, so they are of no use for measuring your heart rate while swimming. I've decided I can sacrifice having an HR reading while swimming, so the Suunto works for me and I like it very much. YMMV.…

Good for you! Well done!!

I go by my HRM. Others here suggest using machine readings if you have one and don't have an HRM. This morning my bike ride registered 637 kcal on my HRM. MFP had it over 1000! That 400 kcal difference is significant. YMMV.

I run early in a heavily populated urban area. Getting hit by a car is a much bigger concern to me than being attacked. (Not that being attacked hasn't crossed my mind--I'm thinking in terms of probability.) I wear a flashing light, carry a cell phone, have a reflective band around my ankle (a road ID), and select a route…

Count me in. I like your definition and 20 days out of 30 sounds challenging, but possible.

Yes, please define clean eating. I'm very interested in avoiding processed foods and have heard many different definitions.

I strongly recommend spending the money on high-quality sports bras. I wear Champion sports bras and buy them either at Sports Authority or online from Champion.com. I don't want to publicly post the size, but I will tell you that they are in the upper range cup size for a 34 - 36 and I can run respectable distances…
