Pressups, running, pressups, situps, pressups, squats. Also pressups! :-) On my most recent trip, did a lot of stretching, which I tend to neglect usually - that worked well for me

If the question is "can I recover a bit of over eating by doing extra time in the gym?", the answer is a definite yes!!

Comes down to definition of "bad diet". A lot of calories is not necessarily a bad diet; top sportsmen blow through 6,000 cals daily which they need to fuel their exercise and stay lean or bulk up. But they eat the right nutrients. A real "bad diet" would be eating stuff bad for you, and avoiding anything good (eg, stacks…

That is the most amazing story .... Fantastic pictures - fantastic transformation .... Congratulations to you and Jackie .. that is just awesome

You can download a Metronome app (free) on an iPhone and then try to run to the tempo. Possibly best to firstly find out what your current cadence is - if its too far from 180, you should probably set your target cadence partway there Good luck

I am pretty sure you are not too heavy to run! However, do you know what has caused your knee pain? Until you know that, and you've figured a way to deal with it, I would not go on major runs. I think light walk/jogs would be a good start till you figure it out

Agree with all the above. You just need to keep eating! (lots of protein, mild calorie surplus)

I've tried a couple of times now - I use a metronome on my phone, and aim for three steps per beat (to stay symmetrical) and I'm trying 165 now. Its unnaturally fast for me, and I get tired really quickly - but I get the feeling that if I train like thus for a while it will pay off

To the original question / post - it sounds like fuelling and/or water. I certainly found, as I ran longer and longer distances, that I would have days where my heart rate was fine, but my legs cramped up or died. For me, alternating water and Lucozade (Powerade is US equivalent) during the runs worked perfectly - but I…

Thanks everyone - lots of useful info here. I did my first "cadence driven run" today - Metronome set to 150. I plan to do a few at this rate then up it slowly Observations 1. It was a terribly slow run - but the might have been the rain, and the distraction factor (focusing in timing my steps) - so I expect subsequent…

Not at all. I went to an Asic shop (in London), where they - Weigh you and estimate body fat using some hi-tech looking machine - They then put you on a treadmill, put a mask on you to analyze your breathing, monitor your heart rate, and then make you run on a treadmill, slowly upping the pace (until you surrender or fall…

Thanks everyone! Based on this, I will actually work on upping my cadence gradually (over a few short runs at first) Hopefully, it will lead to fewer injuries (well - I only need one fewer injury!) and more economical/faster running. For completeness - I'm quite tall (6'1") - and I do feel most comfortable when I lengthen…

@Ophidion - #1 (current) - very Zen!

ashley:: Actually a really tough choice!! I really like #9 and #10 (rising dress and black outfit with a zipper than can only mean trouble!) ... But I think current profile pic just wins out!

Not sure about BMI - but when I went for a running assessment last year, they said that 8-10% was the ideal body fat %age for a male distance runner. May be different for female runner, though (most likely more)

32 lengths of an Olympic pool - that is exactly correct. Next time you swim for an hour, I suspect you'll be surprised at how many lengths you so - my guess is you're swimming further than a mile without realizing it (By the way - this is coming from a guy who can't swim one length of a leisure pool - just to give you some…

No - in fact quite the opposite!

There was a classic "Don't eat sandwiches" or "Sandwiches are evil" thread that had me cracking up. A lot of people had a very hard time detecting an obvious joke ... which turned a mildly funny thread to a completely hilarious one
