Also, N95s should be fit-tested per user for maximum effectiveness. Wearing them is effective regardless, but they are the gold standard when they are adjusted to the user by someone qualified to do so. For people who need them at my work, the office responsible for all our safety regulations and training does the fitting.…

A couple of the recommendations I saw saw surgical mask underneath, cloth one on top. Can’t hurt!

Yeah, me too. I won’t change my habits anytime soon soon. Too much risk, especially to those with whom I work. Sadly, I think it’ll go in waves. We loosen, things get worse for a month or two, then we tighten up. If folks could only hang on with the right restrictions just a little longer ... One thing going for us are…

Risk of sunburn (UVB rays) may be less, but the UVA rays (skin cancer and premature again) are prevalent even on cloudy days. One of my friends had two bouts of melanoma. For the second one, she ended up in MD Anderson in Houston. I learned a lot spending time with her. Too much, maybe. I will say, this whole mask thing…

I live in SoCal, too. I am outside a lot, and am religious about sunscreen and covering up (hat). My doc said that was enough to be effective in keeping me from the sunshine’s vitamin D. Skin cancer scares me more than popping a couple supplements a day. I’ll keep covering up! 😉
-
Lucky! I have a history of deficiency and get tested regularly. I have t during the pandemic, but my level of supplementation has worked well for me and my levels have been stable. I take an additional 10,000 units a day and that puts me in the middle of the normal range.

Our “super-site” was super efficient, too. Great signage, tons of staff, safety protocols. We used the campus athletics center/basketball arena (we’ve been using it for asymptomatic testing). It bodes well when the vaccine is plentiful. It’s adjacent to a 7-story parking garage (~6000 spaces).
-
If it weren’t for work, I wouldn’t have gotten my first shot of vaccine, in spite of being an “essential worker.” There are SO MANY of us in front-facing positions. I am blessed I work at a university with a medical center and pull to get us vaccinated. Most of the folks I work with are people of color who are often…

I agree. The points you raised are a valid issue for more than just this. And I will stop lest the conversation shift towards the political. Overall, CA has made some positive moves in support of the homeless during the pandemic (sad it took a pandemic). And there are still so many issues. The thing that struck me with the…

Received dose #1 of the Moderna vaccine today! 😃 Arm is the tiniest bit sore—so little I wonder if I’m thinking it is because I think it should be. We’ll see about tomorrow. 🤞🏻 One of my colleagues had some soreness in his arm and upper back. Next dose in 4 weeks! I’m feeling relieved that some of my work risk will be…

I saw that and was relieved for the Florida folks! The news interviewed people coming in from other countries just to get vaccinated: from Canada to Argentina to Columbia.
-
Anything’s possible. But I would think the logistics could get tricky as both vaccines have a rather short shelf life after they’re thawed (and can’t be refrozen). And there are multiple doses per vial. Hope so—it’d be great to be able to redistribute doses to where they’re most needed. Our campus on-site staff are next in…

Thanks. She feels worse today. 😞 Because she is 100% remote, campus is not managing her and her insurance won’t test her yet!? (Not the first time I’ve heard that.) We are blessed with additional paid COVID-specific leave from the campus, so she’ll use that and save her accrued leave. We’re doing a drop-off of stuff…

One of my employees who’s been remoting in since April texted me this weekend ... She has auto-immune issues which make her more vulnerable to the virus. Her bf’s family is very touchy-feely and has been throughout the whole thing in spite of her protests “But we’re FAMILY!” When my staffer and her bf stopped going over…

They’ve turned one of the big Disneyland parking lots (Toy Story, I think) into a massive vaccination site. Kinda makes me smile a bit. Happiest place on earth ... 😊

There is a very disparate educational experience for the children in this country, unfortunately. The children from families and districts that have fewer resources will be left behind their peers whose families and districts have the money to compensate for lost time with extra classes, materials, tutoring. Heck, just…

Reminds me a little of the wedding in rural Maine in August. 65 people. Over half got COVID. Spread it to over 178 people at last count. 7 deaths—none of whom attended the wedding. 😞 One of the people who attended the wedding worked in an assisted living center. Another worked in a prison. Passed it to the prisoners and to…

People here in SoCal, at least some of them, have been honest. Several doctors were interviewed by the LA Times in mid-December and said at least half their patients in the hospitals admitted to participating in gatherings with other households for Thanksgiving. In the end, honesty with the contact tracers can help save…

One of the fitness people I follow on Insta leads classes at a gym in Atlanta. Currently. (She had a baby a few months ago.) In the videos, everyone looks like they’re six-ish feet apart, but there are at least 50 people in the classes and no one is wearing a mask. And they’re doing pretty intense aerobics. It’s like the…

In California we initially did a great job of flattening the curve. But after six weeks, people were fed up with the restrictions and demanded to be able to reopen. Some just did it and continue to do so in spite of the regulations. Our state and local governments were damned if they do and damned if they don’t. I feel bad…

The article I linked to above and another one I read last night indicates the South African variant has initially shown some resistance to the antibodies produced by the vaccines. Lots more research is needed. The South African variant is known to be in 12 countries (according to the articles).

Well, this is not good news. Another article right above this one saying the same thing. https://apple.news/Ak4Tjp_XUTPitWihWKl2dKg

I live in the same region as San Diego as far as COVID goes. And everything is shut down here, too. Southern California region has 0% ICU bed availability and everything is shut. Four out of the five regions of CA (all but Northern CA) are in this position, unfortunately. I’m not even sure if the outside part of the zoo is…

50% of the healthcare workers in a neighboring county here turned it down. I know people with certain medical conditions, or pregnant women might not have enough data to feel like they’re making an informed decision. But I worry about the residual impact on the public if people who work in healthcare with the highest risk…

Sounds like a good plan. You can still get the flu when you’ve had the flu shot. Makes sense with this as well. And flu is down this season. Likely because of all the precautions we’re taking for COVID.

Depends on the kind of glove, I think. We’ve had to ration the nitrile gloves of a certain thickness for our custodians as those will protect their hands from the sanitizing spray. We have other gloves of all kinds for everyone else as a germ barrier.

It’s been active in parts of California for a while, but not mine. In December, it went state-wide. since it’s opt-in (and not mandatory like in other countries) I’m skeptical about its usefulness, but I figured it couldn’t hurt and activated it.

I go early when there are few people and everyone is wearing a mask. Early on in the pandemic, due to the extreme hours I was working, I tried food delivery. The substitutions were laughable and I never tried again. My two favorites: * Asked for Keto Cookie Dough; substitution was canned cranberry jelly * Asked for grated…

Absolutely—we’ve definitely seen examples of that here. And the Diet Bet she’s talking about is online and not affiliated with any products or gyms. I continued to use MFP and my Garmin during my bet.

Part of my job is facilities on a college campus. One day, maintenance brought me the pipe from the soda machine—the one the syrup went through before it mixed with the CO2, which needed to be replaced. Over time, the syrup had worn through the 1/4 inch steel. And the SMELL!!! Oh. My. God. (I actually gagged a little…
