  • Who am I labeling? Actually, I said that certain followers claim that the diet is superior, not that they as individuals are superior. In fact, here is my quote "That's pretty much my issue with Pale/Primal followers....the claims that the diet is superior from a health perspective. I'm yet to see the evidence (not n=1…
  • I'm not trying to push anything onto you. I couldn't care less what you or others eat. I don't discuss how I eat. However, the OP asked opinions of Paleo. I have given my opinion on the lack of credibility of some of the reasoning behind primal/paleo, as have others. I have also provided my perspective on 'Drs put type 2…
  • Inferiority complex? That's a good one........it's funny how you always seem to resort to personal attacks when you can't think of anything else. It says a lot about your ability to reason at an intelligent level. What do I have to feel inferior about? I've never discussed my way of eating. When have I ever put…
  • Do you really think that's the issue? For me it's the fact that certain followers claim that the {insert whatever diet here] diet is superior from a health perspective. When I ask for evidence, as I usually do, I get directed to a website written by someone who spouts convincing but unsubstantiated claims (eg. the genetics…
  • No doctor I know recommends Paleo and I've only recently worked in diabetes clinics in 2 different city hospitals. Actually I've never heard of a specialist clinician recommending Paleo as a last ditch resort when something goes terribly wrong. That's pretty much my issue with Pale/Primal followers....the claims that the…
  • Yes, it's well known that dietary components alter gene expression, but what often isn't known is the effect at the protein level and ultimately the effect (or not) on phenotype, the genes involved (there are ~25K genes in our genome), the titration of nutrients involved, other modulating factors, individual differences,…
  • Certainly. His claim. "You may already have a pretty fair understanding of how the human genome evolved to exactly where it is today (or 10,000 years ago, to be more precise) based on the environmental and behavioral factors under which our ancestors lived through natural selection." The reality. Human evolutionary events…
  • That would be Mark and his Daily Apple who promotes a book titled The Primal Blueprint". His blurb says "Combining modern genetic science with the immutable principles of human evolution, health and fitness expert Mark Sisson presents a revolutionary, easy-to-follow program based on ten Primal Blueprint laws that will…
  • OP, it would be an issue if you had kidney disease, which can be 'silent' until the advanced stages. Fortunately, it's rare in people under 60.
  • Wouldn't that be a fun way to spend my Sunday...trawling through your old posts? No, I've had enough exposure to you to form an opinion that you are calling out narrow mindedness when in fact, you are frequently guilty yourself. I remember this thread as an example.…
  • I love this post. There is also the fact that fat distribution has a genetic/heritable component and for some women, visible abs can be extremely difficult to achieve.
  • YOU are the one making the accusations about narrow-minded posters, not me. You are funny.
  • What do I think of the article? Not much. The author is a blogger who touts the anti-sugar, grains are bad approach. http://authoritynutrition.com/low-carb-diet-meal-plan-and-menu/ He is fab at cherry-picking articles and links to support his narrow dietary approach. He uses appeal to authority for credibility "I'm a…
  • I agree! I have spent some time working as a dietitian in a diabetes clinic and the senior dietitian holds training sessions for the Drs (including endocrinologist specialists) because their knowledge about the dietary management of diabetes is lacking. OP go with the nutritionist/dietitian because the advice you have been…
  • Oh the irony. My impression of you from your posting history Tennisdude is that you appear tunnel visioned towards the Paleo/Primal/low carb approach and can't see beyond it. I have watched you white knight anyone who is asked to provide credible evidence (that's NOT Mark's Daily Apple) that this particular…
  • Butter on its own is evil.......but when added to sugar, the evilness is neutralised and it becomes.....heaven...
  • What about cake with butter cream frosting......butter + sugar, whipped until light and fluffy, piped onto soft sweet cake......mmmmmmm
  • Here are some showing negative effects of a high fat low carb diet. Low-carbohydrate diet scores and risk of type 2 diabetes in men. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21310828 Conclusion: A score representing a low-carbohydrate diet high in animal protein and fat was positively associated with the risk of T2D in men. Negative…
  • I've been watching this with great interest partly because it impacts my work. I'm still not convinced that saturated fats are OK, but people are certainly questioning dietary guidelines because of the media frenzy over the original article. I rarely eat butter and I buy margarine enriched with plant sterols for DH because…
  • I eat dessert almost every night. My current favourite is tinned pie apples drenched in cinnamon sugar with dollops of thick Greek yogurt. I big bowl is only around 150 cals
  • There's a group called Say No to Sugar which might be a good place to get some support. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/4348-say-no-to-sugar
  • I agree with your dr. If you have the genetic condition familial hypercholesterolaemia you should avoid butter. Eta. OP, have you checked out the advice from the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Foundation site? http://thefhfoundation.org/treatments/diet-lifestyle-tips/
  • From what you've described, the enema was a hypertonic solution (more salt than body fluids) so water will be drawn out of the colon into the lumen (space) which would give you diarrhoea. A hypertonic enema should not cause water retention, it should cause the opposite.
  • You may have more luck with a dietitian who specialises in genetic metabolic conditions. They may want you to have genetic testing done (if you haven't already) because you may have one copy of the mutation or two copies and this affects your ability to metabolise long chain fatty acids. They may tailor their advice…
  • Perhaps Mark could teach me how
  • Perhaps they are merely entertained instead of stressed and anxious. You sound a little anxious actually....
  • People with credibility.
  • ...and I'll provide a 4 year old research article as evidence. Perhaps I should have thought of this 4 years ago, but never mind, enjoy your potato salad".
  • Not quite. He's a Paleo/Primal blogger who encourages diabetics to go on the Paleo diet. A complaint was made to The North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition that he was practicing nutrition without a licence. The Board investigated the claim and told him that he was violating state law by providing nutrition advice…
