  • I don't know if there is a "best" way. I suspect the worst way would be to sync the zen labs app to MFP, though. The one time I tried that it gave me a miniscule number of calories for my run and it overwrote the better data that my Fitbit had collected. If your stride length is close to correct, your Fitbit should do a…
  • I found the article very interesting, especially the information about the effect of weight loss on hormones like leptin that affect hunger. Unfortunately, the only definite conclusion I can draw from it is that rapid weight loss by means of extreme calorie restriction combined with extreme exercise is a bad idea. I…
  • I think repeating days or weeks is pretty normal. I started last spring, got stalled on week 5 and gave up. Then, started again last fall using the treadmill but again stalled. Then, I read advice that slowing way, way down was the key and was able to finish on the treadmill, but wasn't running anywhere near 5k because I…
  • @mom4gj : There's apparently a bug in the iOS app, from the messages I've seen, so if you have an iPhone that's probably the issue. Try looking at your account using the web site instead of the app. I believe I saw that MFP knows about the bug and is working on it.
  • I know some people run outside in all kinds of weather, but I'm not that dedicated yet and don't have all the proper gear. I'll put in some treadmill time and do Zumba until the weather gets better. I haven't tried running in the rain yet - it's still to early in the year to have warm rain and I'm not sure we ever get warm…
  • When I first started using MapMyWalk, the mapping function in Fitbit didn't work - at least for my phone (Android, Moto G) - so if I wanted a map, I had to use a different app. Fitbit's mapping now works much better than it used to, although it still has flaws (but then, so does MMW, just different flaws) so I tend to use…
  • When that sort of thing happens, check the math that MFP is using to compute your adjustment. They seem to still be chasing down a bug that causes the calculation to be messed up. I think it is affecting more people than they realize, so I'm sort of campaigning for everyone to report it when it happens. When it gets me,…
  • When I had MapMyWalk connected to MFP, I didn't like the effect it had on my Fitbit data. So, I disconnected it from MFP. I still use MMW because I like sharing my walks and runs with my mom and my sister (it keeps me accountable - they'll notice if I'm not exercising), and because I am using the gear tracker feature to…
  • I attempted W6D3 today, but couldn't complete it. :/ I think I've had to take too many days off and my willpower just wasn't there. I kept having to slow to a walk. I probably would have skipped today too (like I said, my willpower is shot) except that 1) I had a big lunch and needed the calories so I can eat dinner; and…
  • Correction - you have only burned 30 calories more than MFP expects you to have burned so far. That means that while you burned a fair number of calories in your circuits class, you've been very inactive the rest of the day. What activity level do you have selected in MFP? Your MFP activity level should reflect how active…
  • The "Fitbit Calorie Adjustment" isn't just the calories you burn during deliberate exercise. It is the calories that Fitbit says you burned that are over and above the calories MFP expected you to burn. You can see the math that MFP uses to calculate your adjustment by clicking the little 'i' next to the adjustment on the…
  • The replies you've already gotten are correct. You'll typically start the day with a negative adjustment. The number of steps it takes to "get into the black" isn't a set number. A full day with only 3000 steps might not ever go positive, if they're spread out over the whole day (or, if you take them all first thing in the…
  • I suspect that you may be seeing the same bug that has been hitting me occasionally. On the website, I see two Fitbit Exercise Adjustments. The first one won't let me examine the math and won't let me delete it. The second one shows a faulty calculation - it includes some exercise calories in the "MyFitnessPal Calories…
  • If you look at a previous day and MFP says you were right on target and Fitbit says you were way over your calories, then something has to be off. As I said in my previous post, my first go-to is duplicate meal entries because normally mine match pretty closely when I look at a previous day. (They never match until the end…
  • There could be several things going on. One thing to check is whether the meal summaries that are transferring over from MFP to Fitbit aren't getting messed up. You should only have one meal summary for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Other meals can get lumped into "Anytime" depending on how you have things set up and named,…
  • W6D2 done. It was pretty tough but I completed both run intervals without walking. I think taking 2 extra days off of running helped my knee but made it harder to complete the run. I did do it, though. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to take another extra 2 days off before my next run, too. I may elect to repeat today's…
  • @tisha_rae : "eating back calories" refers to eating the "Fitbit Calorie Adjustment" or other exercise calories in MFP. Most of us follow MFP for calorie intake goals and I, for one, do "eat back" my Fitbit adjustment (I never log exercise in MFP, only in Fitbit). I'd recommend that you read the FAQ found in the stickies…
  • I reported the problem to MFP about a week or so ago. They asked for some additional information, but the message was sort of boilerplate so I didn't give it a high priority (I'd given them screen shots already) and didn't get around to responding. Yesterday they sent a message saying they thought they'd fixed it (I didn't…
  • Checking in to say that I'm not going to do my scheduled run today and maybe not tomorrow. My right knee started bothering me Tuesday afternoon (it was fine during my run that morning). It's better, but not entirely back to normal, so I may skip running tomorrow, too. So, W6D2 is going to have to wait. It's too bad, too.…
  • heybales is right - why have a Fitbit if you're not going to trust its calorie burn estimate? It is bound to be better than MFP's. If your weight loss is stalled, look at other factors. For instance - is 2 lbs a week a realistic number? My understanding is that a realistic goal is 1/2 pound per week for every 25 pounds you…
  • Check the math MFP is using to calculate your adjustment. (Go to the exercise page and click on the little 'i' next to the adjustment.) I've had intermittent problems with this. When it happens to me, I have two adjustments instead of one. One won't show me the math and can't be deleted. The other one will show me the math…
  • @MimiOfTheLusciousLawn : That looks like a good idea - useful for things other than running. I might have to get one.
  • Don't worry about it if you can't talk or sing when running. Not everyone can, even if they're running at the proper pace for them. For some people that works great as a guideline, but if I used it, I would be limited to strolling.
  • I failed the first time I tried to do C25k outside, then I was failing again the next time I tried it, indoors on the treadmill. Then, I read the advice that enabled me to finish - if you can run any slower, then you're running too fast. I slowed way down, and finished the timed program on the treadmill. Running at 3.8…
  • With a Fitbit attached to MFP, your activity setting is less important - as long as you have negative adjustments enabled. If you hate getting negative adjustments, then setting it to Sedentary will minimize those. Except if a setting of Sedentary causes MFP to give you only 1200 calories to start. Then, set it higher…
  • @kel913 : That looks pretty broken, but I don't know how to fix it. If you can, look at it using the web site, rather than the mobile app and see if it is the same there. Then, try the disconnect/reconnect procedure. If all else fails, contact MFP support.
  • W6D2 done. I haven't been able to run outside since last Thursday, due to weather, but I did get good 5 mile walks in on Friday and Monday (before and after the worst of the weather) and ran on the treadmill Saturday and Sunday. It was cold and windy when I set off today, but I just kept going and overall it wasn't too bad.
  • Go to your Fitbit Dashboard and then to the Food page and see if you have meal summaries there.
  • Is your food transferring from MFP to Fitbit? That'll indicate whether the connection is really there or not. However, you may have to resort to contacting MFP support. Unfortunately, the first thing they're likely to suggest, even if you tell them you've already done it, is a disconnect/reconnect. But, maybe, after that,…
  • @JanetMMcC : I use all three, but MMW isn't really connected to anything else. At one point, I had MMW connected to MFP, but didn't like that it overwrote my Fitbit data. I do have MMW connected to Fitbit, but I can't tell that they actually exchange any information. So, now, when I go for a walk, I start both MMW and the…
