  • I didn't see anyone mention clamshells. Those are delisously difficult and effective with a resistance band.
  • Update: So I was worried that I wasn't actually strong enough for 15lb dumbbells, and the 12lb dumbbells were priced more appropriately. It turns out I'm wimpier than I thought, and these are going to be useful for a while. I can use one, then the pair, while I save up or keep my eyes peeled for an adjustable set. Ebay was…
  • I won my ex's old friends in the break-up, and they're ordering for the second year in a row (we went waaaaay overboard when we would cook). I'll be making avalanche bark (like rice krispie treats with white chocolate and peanutbutter) and schmancy rice krispie treats for their son with celiac. And because I'm not a big…
  • I have hyperparathyroidisn secondary to kidney disease, and I've had one parathyroid adenoma removed. Make an appointment with an endocrinologist and have your primary care test your PTH levels. If you come back with a diagnosis, I'd be happy to talk about my experience with the surgery and how my other glands took over…
  • Everybody and everything is weird if you think about it long enough. Enjoy your pasta!
  • I'm 5'5" 135, lightly active, and I would lose on 1700/day. You'd lose just fine on 1890, if you're weighing your food and logging accurately. Don't deprive yourself if you don't need to!
  • What she said. I've been disabled since I was 19, and 20 years later I'm back in school to change professions now that my body is shutting down in new and exciting ways. Assistance programs like this have saved my life. So often, people worry about eating healthy on a budget, so I thought it would be helpful to be…
  • American Flatbread frozen pizza. I buy pineapples whether or not they're on sale. I buy whatever "good"butter happens to be cheapest when I need it. For me and my SNAP, these are splurges. The first day of my period, I find myself willing to buy Ben and Jerry's for $6.99 (with cash, not SNAP, for the persnickety readers)…
  • Thanks for all the great ideas! I have specific limitations and goals, but some of these will be great for others with bigger budgets and and spaces.
  • You're right, and they're my favorite color at Amazon. How did I miss this? I guess I wanted them to be even cheaper the other day. I'm going to let them sit in my cart and hope they go down a little...
  • I went to a hand specialist and got diagnosed with arthritis in both thumbs last year. He sent me home with thumb splints. Got a referral for occupational therapy from my primary care, and the therapist noted my very loose connective tissue. I'd get a diagnosis before trying anything yourself. The OT gave me resistance…
  • All I wanted was a plain, crew neck t-shirt. No weird cuts, no pockets, no embellishments. At 5'6", 135lbs, even the extra small of the only plain t-shirts at Kohls were too big. I am not extra extra small. I don't even bother with pants because they're never cut for my shape.
  • This isn't what you want to hear, but sometimes it just takes longer for the body to heal. If I injured my head, as well as other things, I'd be giving myself permission to take it slowly. I have been doing PT for a back injury from last year for several months, and I still have terrible days. And I'm still using the same…
  • I have a retroverted uterus and some pelvic floor weirdness, and I just had my first PT visit concerning it the other day. It's actually my 4th PT since January, so I've already been doing some of the exercises she recommended. Your PT will check you for general tightness in the surrounding muscles, and give you stretches…
  • I'm curious to hear from the person who disagreed with this. My dialysis dietitian switched me from veggie back to omnivore back in the day precisely because of the increased bioavailability of protein from meat sources. Eggs, in particular, were high on her list of best bioavailability. Before my kidneys failed, I was…
  • I was given a prescription for Ensure when I lost weight due to dialysis. Not quite the same, but they threatened to hospitalize me for an eating disorder I didn't have, so I can empathize. If drinking your calories works for you, you might want to look into investing in a Vitamix and get good at making soup.
  • If you've consistently been eating above maintenance for the past two weeks of "haywire" eating, then some of it is probably actual gain. Still likely that most of it is water, though. I find that my stress eating mechanisms don't care if I'm eating masssive amounts of produce or "junk." They just want the food shoveled…
  • Thank you for all the suggestions! Some are out of my price range (homeless disabled student), but I have a better idea of what materials to search for. And *sigh* yes, I reuse my plastics. They're incredibly useful, and easy to return to the store when they're no longer so. You misunderstand me. It is inconvenient to lug…
  • My natural remedy for bloat is chewing throroughly. Especially raw fruits and vegetables. Your mouth is where digestion starts, and chewing is free. Activated charcoal also absorbs meds you ingest, so please don't just take it on your own.
  • Hello! I have a rare genetic connective tissue disorder called Alport Syndrome. I have a 19 year old kidney transplant and wear bilateral hearing aids to "treat" it. I was recently diagnosed with non-specific loose connective tissue all over, which 1. explains sooooo much and 2. has caused osteoarthritis in most of my…
  • I went to physical thereapy for my back issues. I was already limber compared to their usual patients, so I did a lot of strength work, and continue to work with resistance bands at home. If you can do PT and get a customized plan, I highly recommend that. I haven't had time to do them for the past few weeks because I…
  • I had gall bladder attacks that went undiagosed for 15 years because they started when I dropped down to 110lbs at 5'6" when I went on dialysis (due to a rare genetic connective tissue disorder). No one thought to check my gall bladder because I was a young, thin woman. I got scoped, did barium swallows, gastric emptying,…
  • If protein is 4 calories per gram, how could you make a chicken sausage that is closer to 1 calorie per gram? Are you an alchemist???
  • Be aware that eating large amounts of watermelon at night could lead to getting up several times to release said water. This is why I stick with yogurt and banana at night.
  • I was 5'6.5" in high school. Maybe a touch more at times. In my 30s, I managed to shrink an inch, which is normal with my loose connective tissue and arthritis. Last summer, I had a bad landing during a stage combat rehearsal and ended up 5'4". Went to physical therapy, and I'm back at 5'6.5"! I've had doctors offices put…
  • Seconding the therapist. I know a couple amputees and scores of people with mobility disorders. I know wheelchair USERS (they're not bound to it) who teach yoga, swim, lift, and surf. Sometimes, we need to give the world a push to accomodate different bodies. Any clever teacher or trainer would be willing to work with him…
  • No ablation, but I've had 3 Mirenas, and I've been on progestin-heavy treatments for endometrial hyperplasia since I got my kidney transplant 19 years ago. No problems losing weight, but some problems with consistency due to increased hunger. A lot of water retention every month, too. Honestly, I just don't want a uterus…
  • My physiatrist sent me tp physical therapy for functional restoration, and they gave me resistance bands and strength work to do at home. The exercises are intended to improve my quality of life, but I also look nicer with more muscle.
  • I can go crazy with dates, so I save them for rare feastdays.

  • My meds are like this. I asked my doctor if I could reduce my dosage and eat grapefruit every day, but he shot me down. This is also true for carambola (starfruit) and large amounts of pomegranate (like drinking a glass of the juice), so it pays to triple check that you're not about to poison yourself with fruit.
