  • Thanks for your responses. For me it is hard to find differences in the Atkins Induction Diet, LCHF Diet, and Ketogenic Diet. 90% of the tenets are common to each. I am solidly overweight according to BMI calculations. I am not metabolically impaired. I have a healthy relationship with food. I don't elevate my cortisol…
  • This looks tasty. May substitute the cracker with a slice of cucumber. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aS7EyWsOQc
  • Will have to search Bar Harbor products, thanks. I agree, about not taking fish to work. I could not believe the ruckus in the cafeteria. I have found something that works. We have picnic tables outside. I choose a vacant table away from the other tables. I warn people that they are entering a fish zone. I double bag the…
  • I had two choices at the market for full fat plain yogurt in the past. I now have none. There is a full refrigerator chest of reduced/low fat, high fructose yogurts. Grocers will carry what sells. The public still buys into the low fat message. No more yogurt for me.
  • Kippers are smoked herring. Here is a good article. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/apr/07/food-kippers-smoked-fish-sales-revival
  • My father liked sardines and buttermilk also. I don't remember him eating them together. Probably a good idea to expose your child to a wide variety of foods at an early age. I am shocked at the great number of picky eater adults. We always had "no thank you portions" of foods that we did not care for. Not many five year…
  • I like smoked kippers too. I always ate them straight from the can. I could never figure out what to eat them with except crackers. I did a search and I see people eat them warmed in a pan with butter with scrambled eggs. Going to give that a try with some sautéed onion an green pepper slices. Think that will work for me.
  • Here is another post on the METH method for treating a sprain. http://theelitetrainer.com/index.cfm?t=Blog&pi=BLOG&blid=73
  • Much of what we have been taken for granted about treating sprains may be as helpful as the dietary advice we had been given. The RICE method may not be the most helpful advice. You might want to check the link below about the METH method for treating a sprain.…
  • +1 Right on! Haas avocados Carrington Farms coconut oil-54 oz. Chosen Foods avocado oil-1L bulk frozen vegetables Grass fed Lamb leg Seasons sardines in olive oil etc.
  • For those who may be interested a post outlining uses of various oils as skin care products. All can be purchased on line and are very inexpensive. http://www.ourhomemadehappiness.com/2012/05/my-all-natural-facial-moisturizer.html
  • I use unrefined shea butter as a body moisturizer throughout the year and a 1:1 mixture of avocado and apricot kernel oil on my face. My skin has really benefited from this routine.
  • Sorry, if I gave you the impression that fats were excluded from the equation. My error. A better core statement (for me): Eat protein and FAT from quality animal sources, eat good quality vegetables, avoid processed foods. If one wants to embellish the core by adding low GI fruit, organ meats, fermented foods, whole…
  • Just an opinion. Back years ago, maybe 10-15 years ago, there was great agreement between the new Paleo diet and the more established low carb diet. They were sister and brother movements coexisting and the general message in its simplest form was -"Eat protein from animal sources and vegetables; avoid sugary processed…
  • Staple, with other healthy proteins, as long as you don't have a problem with egg proteins. Fortunately, I don't seem to.
  • Fermented food might help. Fermented food with a probiotic might even be more beneficial. I can't eat fermented foods. I use prebiotics and probiotics. I had decided, after a dose of antibiotics, that my gut flora might benefit from a little support. A a prebiotic I use resistant starch. It is a food that is not digested…
  • I imagine the ADA is the first place the newly diagnosed diabetic goes for advice. For years the ADA has been giving out really bad advice to diabetics. They did not endorse a low carb diet for diabetics but a slightly modified food pyramid diet.. I had heard they had endorsed a low carbohydrate diet plan recently which…
  • An apple would work. You might consider cherries also as they have a low GI (22). They have large frozen bags at Costco. I have used them in the mix instead of banana.
  • Here are the rest of the studies since 2003 comparing LC VS LF. Really a nice mega study summary comparing weight, lipid panels, etc. The best I have seen. http://authoritynutrition.com/23-studies-on-low-carb-and-low-fat-diets/
  • I'm 61. I ran in my 30's and 40's. I was not a high mileage runner, 7-10 miles a week. In my mid forties I got knee pain. I did some research and decided to give up running. I chose to bike, hike and walk. Within a few months the pain went away. I have not run since. I get all I need from lower impact exercise. I am…
  • I think you might find that smoothies might work as a quick and easy breakfast. My daughter would never think of trying eggs or avocado. I was able to put them in a smoothie with a handful of frozen berry medley and she never knew the difference. She ate this pretty much every morning for a year or so. When she eventually…
  • Nice! Let's see how much traction the study gets. I have already seen some of the established dietary community critique the study, defending the party line and ignoring the science. "Do not know the long term health effect...people won't be able to eat this way long term"... etc. This study mirrors a 2003 one year study…
  • I would suggest less carbs. more fat and limit protein to around 60 grams.
  • An excess of carbohydrates raises triglycerides... beans...fruit...beer...bread...cereal... all contribute to raising triglycerides. Eating complex carbohydrates, vegetable greens, may not have as much influence. Different strokes for different folks...I "worry" more about my HDL (being over 50) and my triglycerides being…
  • Here is a good video by Dr. Attia describing his personal experience on ketosis as an athlete. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqwvcrA7oe8
  • You might want to do some research on triglyceride:HDL ratios. Very good ratios are less than 2 and high ratios approach 4. Your ratio is 16. A desirable HDL number for men is 50 and over and triglycerides should be lower than 150. Many lipid experts feel that triglycerides should be 70 or less. It is difficult to raise…
  • I really did not take offense at his looking. I don't consider what I eat to be information that wouldn't share. If it was something that was sensitive for me I would have told him so and ask him to leave my office nicely. We are a pretty tight as a group. We discuss current events, diet, music, sports etc. without hurting…
  • I wouldn't have said anything to this individual had he not commented about what he thought was my neurotic behavior. Then all is fair.
  • I think that sodium ingestion isolated by ITSELF is over implicated in the hypertension puzzle. Some information would report that maybe 25% of people are sodium sensitive. But current medical opinion cut the sodium or medicate. Some people that are compromised do have a problem with sodium-potassium consumption i.e.…
  • Sorry, I looked back in some articles and I guess it is potato starch (not flour) and plantain FLOUR as high sources of resistant starch. The source plantain flour was Barry Farms.
