Once you have the basic information and resources, much of weight loss is psychological. If a short-term fast causes you to lose a little weight and puts you in a positive frame of mind for continuing or maintaining, that is not a "placebo" effect. In addition, many people do Intermittent Fasting all year long.

You should watch the videos or read the book by Michael Mosley on this subject. He has a medical degree, interviewed the leading researchers in the field for the BBC, and does Intermittent Fasting himself.

I'm starting a short-term Protein Sparing Modified Fast today. It's designed to maximize fat loss. It's an extreme diet, but sometimes an extreme diet is what I need. As I've never been anywhere near clinically overweight and am healthy, I trust my own experience.

You don't have garden-variety issues. You work out a lot and need a certain amount of calories to maintain your performance yet you want to lose fat. You should seek out dietitians or trainers who have experience with short women doing triathlete sports. You may need someone who has a solid background but is willing to…

Excellent strategy.

Unless you have an unusual physiological problem (couldn't hurt to check with your doctor), you are probably eating more than you think. Are you weighing and measuring everything you eat? Don't give up. Exercise is important for health, but calorie reduction is the key to weight loss. At 106 pounds, I'm still at a very…

Provided that government is willing to provide or subsidize the purchase of healthier food for people who need help, I think it's an idea worth exploring. Corporations that make money from unhealthful food have no incentive to stop and fast food is formulated to appeal to certain pleasure centers in the brain, which makes…

For me, fast and streamlined weight loss is more important. I've never been overweight, but my weight creeps up, each year a little higher as I get older, and the best way for me to get it down is to go on a strict diet, or do intense Intermittent Fasting for a short period of time, say, two weeks. Usually, the boost is…

There's a definitional problem. Many women would love to look like Jessica Biel. But that look is not attainable by everyone. The issue some women have is with looking bigger (not "bulky" like a man) than is attractive for their height and physique. For example, if you already have disproportionately big thighs certain…

Wear what's comfortable and easy to clean, and if self-conscious, don't wear revealing clothes. If I have a choice, in a room with several rows of treadmills I prefer the back row. If there are windows, I usually pick a station away from the windows. I'm not interested in putting on a show for anyone, or even possibly…

Don't worry about it and do what your dentist instructs. The whole thing will be over in a couple of weeks. I had all four wisdom teeth extracted at once. THAT was fun. Edited to add: As others have said, a salt water rinse doesn't cause bloating. I can't remember that happening. In any event, the main goal should be to…

If you read my comment, I discussed the health implications first. The classifications shouldn't matter, but if women are constantly being described in those terms they have their effect. It's very easy for men to dismiss this because they are not judged the same way. It's called "male privilege."

I've had this issue for a while. I joined this site almost two years ago to maintain my weight during an injury, which worked. But then I wanted to stay the same or lose some weight. This last holiday season my weight shot up (for me) and I still haven't gotten it under control.

In some cases, one's pattern of weight distribution is believed to indicate possible health issues. For example, researchers say that it's healthier to be pear-shaped than to be apple-shaped because the fat stored in the abdominal region is metabolically different to that stored in the hips, glutes, and thighs. There's a…

If you have no health problems, think you can stick to it, and will be motivated to continue on with something less strict when it's over, go for it. Some folks need a boost.

It may be possible, but such an extreme diet requires medical supervision. You also have to condition yourself not to return to old eating habits once your regime ends. Once you see some success you may be willing to extend your time frame.

Why don't you do what you plan to do -- eating healthy food, no-cal, healthy beverages, (reasonable) exercise -- for a month and see where you are? In other words, instead of fixing a set goal, put your plan into practice every day and focus on that. You may not be able to lose 50 pounds in 5 months, but you may develop…

Haven't done it in ages, but I think I once did a minute and 20 seconds.

Speaking truthfully about your experience doesn't make you a "debbie downer." From what I've seen, your experience is not uncommon. I have different issues: I'm very pear-shaped, though not overweight. It's extremely irritating to read people go on and on about how exercise and diet will change one's body shape when that…

Very true. What's more, the right balance will change as you change because of factors such as pregnancy, injury, or increased activity. As you age, you probably will require fewer calories. The monitoring and adjusting never ends.

I think that blow drying your hair every day is going to damage it. If possible, find a style that is more wash and wear. Or wash your hair less often.

There are laws of chemistry, however. Am I saying that every psychotropic drug causes weight gain or that in every case the patient can do nothing about it? Of course not. But there are some that are strongly associated with weight gain. That's a fact. Look up the drug's profile on the web and go to the "side effects"…

Actually, Prozac/Fluoxetine is associated with weight loss for many people. When it first was introduced, there were many articles promoting this aspect. But everyone responds a bit differently.
-
You're welcome. Good luck in finding a medication that helps while not causing excessive weight gain. If you have a chance, check out the book I mentioned -- maybe you could borrow it from the library -- because it addresses this issues. Concern about weight gain, especially for women, is not a trivial issue.

This is good basic advice, but there exist some medications that change people's metabolisms and diet and exercise won't much help. The body simply processes food differently. It's better for the individual to switch to a different drug. In an earlier post in this thread, I referenced a book by a psychiatrist who…

It's amazing to me how little people know about depression, even today.
