Effexor is a different class of drug from Paxil. In addition, every person's chemistry is different. Yes, this is a "special snowflake" example. People react extremely differently to these medications.

Weight loss is a side effect of some antidepressants. As this is a problem for you (understandably), discuss it with your doctor and ask to try another medication. You might try to find a book that addresses this issue, "When Words Are Not Enough," by Valerie M. Raskin, M.D. If you go to the Amazon site, click on the "Look…

Admittedly, I've tried to maintain my weight because if I had to lose a lot of weight over a long period I fear that I would be overwhelmed. But when I am in full weight-loss mode I try to focus on what I'm doing RIGHT NOW. The past is over and the future hasn't happened. I try to stay with thoughts such as: Am I eating…

The emphasis should always be on maintaining proper form. These programs are watched by thousands, even millions of people. The makers have no idea what your level of fitness is, or whether you have physical issues that would make performing the workout as presented difficult or unsafe. A heart rate monitor will tell you…

Of course. A junk food diet may not be healthy in the long run, but if you create a calorie deficit you will lose weight.

Two obvious differences are that the fellow who made Supersize Me did not restrict his calories and he was not active. What a lousy piece of "journalism."

Just noting that not everyone has this problem. If i'm tired I can work out, drink a cup of coffee, and fall asleep. Any insomnia I've had, and I've had long stretches, has never been caused by late-night exercise.

How badly sleep-deprived are you the next day? Normally, I'd say, get the sleep, but if the basketball game is something you really enjoy, is a good workout, and takes place at no other time maybe it's worth the sacrifice. But be aware that lack of sleep has been associated with obesity. (I don't know if one day a week…

It's hard to keep track of your weight and to determine even a rough idea of your calorie requirements if you don't weigh yourself. Maybe you weigh yourself less than when losing, but you still need a record. Actually, my sense is that most people who successfully maintain their weight weigh themselves just as frequently…

It's a fun gadget that is especially good for people who don't regularly follow a vigorous exercise plan. I've had two that were gifts. The problem for me is that the Fitbits that clip on are easily lost. I currently can't find mine (currently, the Fitbit One). If I were to buy one I'd get the version that's worn on the…

I would see a doctor and Registered Nutritionist. I have a condition that is possibly aggravated by acidity and I try to drink cold brewed coffee, which has much less acidity than that found in regular brew.

I'm 5'2" and currently 107, which is a very high weight for me. If I had been 196 pounds I'd be terrified of regaining as well. I get that you're verging on the obsessive, but you need to be somewhat obsessive, or shall we say, "focused," to make these habits stick for the rest of your life. You just need to figure out a…

I don't usually open my diet, but you can add me if you like. Once the cold weather clears, I'm planning on resuming, in fact, for a short period, I will be well doing a Protein Sparing Modified Fast.

If the question is something like, "Does everything I eat count?" or "Is standing exercise?" or "Does 'water' mean water?" I'd agree with you. But there are times when people come forward with advice derived from careful observation of their own patterns -- things which may not have been covered in a study -- and they are…

You say you have hypothyroid and depression. Are you being treated by professionals for these conditions? As others have said, you CAN do the things you've described. Life is tough for everyone, but I'm not going to pretend that it isn't harder being obese. So work out a plan to end your obesity. You're 19. You have plenty…

Over the years and/or recently: Other people's bags of cookies; Numerous chocolates; Boxes of crackers; 90% of a pie; Half a pizza; Almost all of a box of specially made macarons; Most of a box of marzipan. I'm not overweight, so people don't understand how overeating could possibly be an issue for me. I've had obese…

Thank you. On top of what I've described, I'm convinced that eating certain foods triggers cravings. If I were on my own most of the time with control over what went into my fridge it wouldn't be a problem -- I simply would bring things into the house -- but food is everywhere during the holidays.

I suggest you join one of the IF groups. I've done it off and on, but am not ready to make a commitment right now. BTW, the author of the plan I followed last year, "Fast 5", a daily plan, said it took a minimum of 21 days for the body to adapt. If you find a plan that works for you, IF can be a very effective and fairly…

Yes. I'm all for a Barbie in the shape of a healthy, realistic, humanly possible woman, but I don't think that a plus-size Barbie is a good idea.

I really think that if I had exercised most days it would have been harder for me to pig out as much as I did: The act of moving a body that you think is becoming ungainly acts as a good check on overindulgence. But it was cold and very inconvenient to work out. Oh, well, what''s done is done. Time to start again. I've…

I gained something like six pounds since Thanksgiving. I weighed myself and the number was worse than I'd anticipated. I'm nowhere near clinically overweight, but this a very high weight for me. It happens every winter holiday season: I don't get out to exercise because it's cold and inconvenient (and don't like formal…

Many of my intuitions and observations have been confirmed by articles describing studies or by others who are in a position to see many people develop. They include: --Slow and steady weight loss is not for everyone. A short-term diet (10 days max), 2 or 3 times a year is OK as long as you eat in a balanced manner in…

Find some physical activities you enjoy (running, biking, hiking, team sports) and cultivate friends in those areas.

If you think you have a predisposition to an ED, obviously, don't do it. But a two-week diet does not in and of itself cause one. For some people, streamlining their eating for a limited period is helpful.
-
I'm planning on doing a max 10-day PSMF after the New Year to lose some pounds gained over the holiday. You don't do a heavy workout on it.

I'm not a consistent gym goer, in part because I only go during non-peak hours. I can't stand to wait in line for equipment. But if I'm not ready to go early enough and I don't like to go really late, because my gym is not convenient, I end up not going.
-
Exactly. :-)
-
I don't, but I'm not nearly as active as you. If you are hungry or feel weak you might want to consider upping your calories a moderate amount and see how it goes.

I knew two men like that as well.

I bought a Kindle and read several things at the same time, including: The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking by Oliver Burkeman; Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana; À la recherche du temps perdu by Proust.
