I've started doing this properly about 20 days ago. If it's really REALLY short term,, subsist on protein shakes and a banana. WARNING: you will feel like a warmed up packet of poo though.

Inches for me. Too many factors to consider if you are just using weight (time of day you weigh, water retention, carb loading day etc). Since I've started using MFP, I've lost 3 inches around the belly. I prefer to judge my progress through measurement and looking at myself rather than by a number on a scale.
