I do both - well, if you count Jazzercise as "the gym". Some days I workout at home with various DVDs from Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper. Other days, I go to Jazzercise. It's nice because if I'm not feeling motivated to workout at home, I can go to a class. But with kids, work, etc, I can't always make it to a class, so…

I have a friend that has had knee surgery in the past and still has knee issues that prevent her from running. Her trainer has her do a rowing machine instead. The only downside she said is that she has to row a farther distance than she would have had to run. Not sure if that will work, but it's an idea :)

I have the UP and am pretty sure I am going to return it. It really is just a fancy pedometer. It can't tell me how many calories I've burned (not accurately at least). When I sync it, it shows calories burned but then if I tell it that I actually did a workout at a certain time, it automatically ups the calories burned.…

I really think it depends on what works for you. I have heard that 3 days on, 1 day off is a good mix and I believe that is what they teach at crossfit.
