You can do it! I am in the middle of training for one in January and definitely see progress in my endurance and times. I'm following a Hal Higdon training plan (free on the Internet) that is really helping.

I make low-fat hash browns with a shredded small potato sauteed in no-stick, then cook an egg sunny side up in the same pan along with it. It fills me up for only about 200 calories. I always drink 2 big glasses of water after the meal which helps.

My son runs on his college xc/track team and they train this way, by time rather than distance.

I'm in the middle of Hal Higdon's half marathon training (12 week) program. I use the Wahoo fitness app to track my pace and distance. It has definitely made a difference in my speed and endurance. Good luck on your goals!

I was thinner after 3 months of breastfeeding than I was when I found out I was pregnant. Exhaustion is a great weight loss tool. Just take care of yourself and focus on eating healthy for yourself and the baby! And enjoy that newborn stage--it lasts such a short time and you have plenty of time to worry about your weight.

I set mini goals for all aspects of my life, not just weight loss. When I have a big work project I break it up into chunks. When I go for a 5 mile run I will go to the end of the song before slowing down. I can't imagine NOT breaking things up into manageable pieces.

Right now I'm weirdly obsessed with grits topped with a poached egg. About 200 calories and it keeps me full for a few hours.

I'm just like you and eat a potato most days. My favorite way to eat one is to shred it and cook it hash-brown style in a pan sprayed with an aerosol spray (I use a Misto with olive oil). It's a pretty good amount of food for not many calories and satisfies the craving.

I give myself permission every day to eat at maintenance if the day proves to be a "hungry" one. Usually just knowing I can up my calories if I want keeps me motivated to eat at deficit.

Syrup. I thought I'd have one toaster waffle with a little syrup for breakfast. The syrup was 210 calories! I had the waffle plain. Not worth it.

The thing I've noticed is how nice it is not to think about my weight so much. Before I'd think about it constantly, and every time I'd meet someone I'd think, I wonder if they're thinking about how fat I am. Now I just think about the conversation we're having.

I don't use one and have lost about 25 pounds. I try to underestimate calorie burns from workouts, which I think helps compensate for the fact that I most likely also underestimate the calories I eat.

I use a few apps that help pass the time. Spotify always for music, and then Zombies, Run! is another one that is kind of fun. Also Bit Gym allows you to choose a city to run through, and it pops up interesting tidbits about the area. I get 3 free workouts per month and in my opinion the upgrade is a little pricey so I…

I will keep all this advice in mind. Thank you everyone!
I plugged in my 5k and 10k times, and my 10k time is what I have actually run my half marathon's at. My 5k pace was way too fast.
Will be interesting to see. My goal is to complete without dying, so I will go by feel, like you recommend, rather than needing to adhere to a rigid training pace. Thank you!
-
Wow, that is extremely helpful. Thank you!
-
Thank you. My method for figuring my pace is completely unscientific--just based on what I've run in the past, and trying to improve slightly. I have run a dozen 5ks but never a half. My typical 5k is around 27 minutes--any recommendations on pace goal for the half?

So interesting to see everyone's patterns. I eat 300 calories four times a day--noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m.
-
This is exactly what I say and people never pursue it.

Animal rescue.

I give myself permission to eat at maintenance any day I want--it helps if I have a day that I'm very hungry. Ironically, knowing I can go up a little if I want helps me stay under.
-
Congratulations!!! Great job!

lol!!!!

Yes, skipping breakfast is not too hard for me. Eating between noon and 6 allows me to have a full meal at 3 or 4, when I used to blow it. It has made all the difference.
-
Sorry for laughing out loud, but that was funny.
-
How about a quiz, guess the amount of calories in different foods--carrot, donut, soda, etc.
-
Try to allow yourself a decent amount of calories when you know you'll need them. I can resist temptation pretty easily up to about noon, so I eat meals around noon, 3, and 6 with a snack in there when I need it. That way I'm able to eat a full meal at my hardest time of day, mid-afternoon.

I just don't engage. If they ask if I've lose weight, I'll say, Thanks, yes I have. If they ask how, I say "Eating less and exercising more." That's it. Also I totally agree about not understanding why people think it's OK to criticize thin people. I try to never comment on people's bodies, period.

I read an interview with some celebrity who said she poured water on her fries when she had had her fill. I do that now too.

Haha!!
