This might be helpful...! "What does undereating look like?" It gives easy additions to bump up calories. http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lzhdo544Pb1qf4zb3o1_1280.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1329804223&Signature=amzEO%2B46lO335dIG6STCPv67P8g%3D

Good answer!

No one's even looking at the video or links :( Just jumping to conclusions. The POINT and the ONLY point is that fructose at the levels currently being consumed is hazardous on a population level as supported by the biochemical metabolism of said molecule. At high doses, regardless of whether or not it's accompanied by…

Sounds like you're doing what we all need to be doing!! Have you always? Or is it a change you made gradually? I'm so interested in the chemistry behind metabolism because I'm a scientist. I work in toxicology and environmental contamination and it's so fascinating seeing how organisms react differently to compounds in…

Agreed. Basics are where it's at. I think I've done a poor job of promoting this video because most people (who haven't watched it) are jumping straight to "don't demonize one molecule" which really isn't what I wanted! I learned through it that fructose metabolism is much more complicated than people assume and that too…

You've missed the main point which is simply that fructose, at the levels we currently consume it, is unsafe. It's everywhere! If it were just in veggies, fruits, grains, etc., that would be less damaging than when it is hiding in my Ragu or my cheerios..yanno? I'm not disagreeing with you about any of your points. I just…

Yes. fructose does result in increases in blood glucose levels. That is why diabetics that get a "low" can drink a bottle of soda and watch their blood sugar increase. The patients in that study were insulin-dependent diabetics. Fructose does NOT however, stimulate insulin secretion. Instead, it transports directly into…

There is a difference between acute and chronic toxicity, of course. The 30bananas ppl obviously aren't dead and likely won't be anytime soon. Sugar in a fruit vehicle is considerably different than sugar in a soda vehicle (mass, volume, water content, fiber, etc). An ape eating fruits here and there interspersed throughout…

the "basically toxic" part comes from the out-put of fructose metabolism which is lipogenesis, aka the production of new fat stored as droplets in the liver. The storage of fat in the liver is toxic. The metabolism of ethanol in alcoholic beverages results in the same suite of liver toxic components and also results in…

I hope not :( Oversimplification is dangerous (although so is overthinking, so maybe we're all better off ignorant?)
-
Cool! I hope you find the video educational. You'll see in it that a NO-SUGAR motto is not what is suggested however. Don't get rid of it altogether! You still need carbohydrates as the main source of fuel in the body. I myself am thinking maybe I need to cut back on sugar as well. Like you, I've been trying really hard…

Fructose does not spike insulin. "Fructose, unlike glucose, does not stimulate insulin secretion from pancreatic ß cells. The lack of stimulation by fructose is likely due to the low concentrations of the fructose transporter GLUT5 in ß cells. Insulin is involved in the regulation of body adiposity via its actions in the…

I think the LOLRUS was a little bit uncalled for... I mean, I'm genuinely interested in this topic. You don't need to make fun of me for it. I read the first article you attached. I understand the points made, but not sure that trusting the USDA statistics is very smart in this case (who makes that food pyramid, anyways?).…

I love this site!! http://jog.fm/ It lets you set up playlists based on how fast you run, walk, etc.

You go girl!! You're beautiful and you look so happy!

Now I'm wondering how to get my sugar under control. I <3 fruits so I'm often wayyyy over on sugar for the day. Eek. Anyone have a good grams/day of sugar that you try to stick to?

haha one of the recipes I want to try calls for spelt flour... I am new to baking though and all I have is regular flour. I think maybe the blog is vegan and gluten free. But that won't stop me! mmmmm.... can't wait for the brownie batter pancakes.

If you don't have time for the video, here's a NY Times article that hits the highlights and the controversy. Pretty good stuff. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17Sugar-t.html?pagewanted=all a snippet: "The phrase Lustig uses when he describes this concept is “isocaloric but not isometabolic.” This means we…

Actually...it does! The metabolism of sugar by the liver does in fact cause the conditions of Metabolic Syndrome, the precursor to Type II Diabetes. Also, fructose does not get synthesized into glycogen the way that glucose does (and is not useful as an energy source. If you ate only fructose and no glucose you would die…

point being that our diets are filled with sugar, most of it (and the sneakiest of it) being in the form of fructose which is hidden away in the form of corn syrup, which is further stashed away in almost everything sold in a box. Glucose is NOT bad. Glucose is the main fuel of life. Fructose and Sucrose are equally bad…

Thanks for the sympathies. I'm feeling quite self-pitying :/ Honestly, the Dr. keeps trying to give me different antidepressants to help me sleep. I think maybe I should have just stuck to the benadryll/melatonin type stuff and then break out the big ambien guns only when needed. Ugh... Need to find my groove again.

Bump. Giving this a try because 1200 calories was making me a miserable person.

Thanks for your input! I didn't go to spinning, but did go for a walk :) Yoga today I think!

I just started a few weeks ago. The class is pretty motivating and the music is fun. You basically do lots of repetitions of low weights using a bar with weights on it. They always do the same muscles group exercises in the same order. I actually kind of like that aspect, because it's predictable. They do squats, lunges,…

Hmmm....that's a good question! I don't think I'd want to have to do that.

dad106 - Thanks for the breakdown on the entry-level Polars. A sales guy at a sporting goods store was pitching them to me and you just gave me about 5X more info than he did!

I just read a link on Runner's World website today about this very topic! I am living in Panama City for a couple weeks and was thinking about trying beach running too. A couple of people on that forum commented that they damaged their achilles tendon while beach running. One person actually ruptured hers, the other just…

Just did level 2 day one yesterday! Sore today!! I really have a hard time doing the oblique jump/twist thingys...! Thought they loosed easy and was surprised when they weren't lol. Also, much more plank-related stuff in level 2. I can feel myself getting stronger :D

You're a cute guy but once that smile started appearing in the pics you got HOT! Way to go, man. You are really, REALLY inspiring. Keep up the good work :D
