Although it is also fun to see all of the stats on GarminConnect.com. Things like elevation, pace, split times, etc can be nice. I'm not sure if you can see those on some of the phone apps or not. Also, to answer your question - I bought my Garmin after I ran my first half marathon and knew I was serious about running and…

Honestly, I like my garmin, BUT it can be a big pain in the butt. It could just be mine, but I have the hardest time getting my garmin to charge. Drives me crazy. So half the time I still use my phone anyways. I think the Garmin is good for 2 reasons: 1. Running in locations without cell service (i.e. trails) 2. Running…

Congrats!!! I definitely want to do NYC someday!

I still do 5K's because those are the only races I can get my friends to do with me! But if I'm not doing it with a friend, then I don't spend the money. That's what longer races are for!

To become an Ultra runner! I'm signed up for 2 ultras next year already (a 50K in March and a 12 hour race in April)...hoping they go well. And SOMEDAY qualify for and run Boston. This is more of a long term thing though because I'm nowhere near running at a pace to qualify. I may just wait until I'm 60 so I don't have to…

I've been running since the summer of 2012 (so about a year and a half). Since then I've worked my way up to about 25-35 miles per week, but am currently training for my first marathon in January, and so right now, I am at about 40 miles per week, and will get up to 45. My weekday runs range from 3-8 miles, and my longest…

I've been training for months for my first marathon (which will be in January), so YES I am going to put a 26.2 sticker on my car after I run it. I worked my *kitten* off (literally) for it. If someone has a problem with it, they can deal with it. And as an ecard I once came across said "I'm sorry if talking about my…

If I remember correctly, my Hal Higdon marathon book suggests starting out slower than you think you should be (by like 30-60 seconds), and then speeding up later on (I can't remember the exact mileage, but I think a little over half way). For me, I think I'm going to start out slow (probably 11-11:30 minute/mile pace),…

I'm not an Ultra runner yet, but... Ever since I started running with people who had done Ultra's, it didn't seem quite so crazy to me. They're just like any other runner. In all honesty, the ones I've met (which are all just recreational) don't do much more training that you would for a marathon. It's just training on…

That's how I'm feeling, lol. Geeze all you people are FAST!!! I'm hoping for a sub-5:00 first marathon. I know I can run faster than that, BUT it'll be my first, so I'm going to start out a lot slower than I would normally since I'm not sure what to expect. That whole "only training to 20 miles" kind of freaks me out a…

They look so ugly...but after hearing everyone's opinions I may need to try them...

Depending on how my first marathon in January goes, I'm hoping to do at least a few more in 2013 - although they will probably be more trail races! I am from Colorado, and would love to do the Colorado Marathon sometime (I've heard it's a good one to try and BQ), but am focusing next spring and summer more on trails.…

I am curious to know what people say about this too - because I'm the same way. I know I've read all the research on how 20 miles is plenty and you don't want to risk injury, yada, yada, but I really think psychologically I would feel better knowing I had done a little closer to 26.2... For my first half marathon I ran up…

You totally should! With your long run pace, I bet you would be able to do a crazy fast mile!
-
A 5-6 minute mile is FAST. My 1 mile PR is 7:11, and that is tough for me. I hope to do a sub-7 someday, but that's as far as my dreams go. I love distance running and trail running because it's not as much about speed as it is about endurance!

Relentless Forward Progress was the one I was going to buy! I read Scott Jurek's book a few months back and loved it (whenever I'm in Boulder I'm secretly hoping I'll run into him, lol...yet to happen, but I can keep wishing!). I'll have to look into these "Hoka's". Right now I have Brooks Cascadia trail shoes, and they've…

Thanks for everyone's advice. I have ran several half marathons including a trail half, a 25K trail run, and a 17.1 mile mountain race with 5500' gain/ 4500' loss. This race will be 3500' of gain over the course of the 50K. I also run at least 10 miles or more every weekend (and working my way up to 20 for marathon…

I would do capri's and a light long sleeve tech. Then buy some of those cheep gloves (the $1 ones), then you can toss them if it gets hot later on. Also, a light ear warmer/headband, that won't feel too hot if it warms up (I have one by suacony - it's real light weight and doesn't get too hot). I think having your hands…

Definitely possible! You could also incorporate 1 day per week of speed work drills - typically at a track. There's a group near me that I joined that meets and does these, and it's really helped me increase my pace as well! You can google "speed work" to get ideas, but typically you'll do various things such as 400-800…

While I agree with the statement everyone has been saying - "as long as you've already been running, it's okay", I think you should ask your doctor... It's one thing to keep running short distances, but the marathon is a really long distance and does put a toll on your body. I know you've done up to a 20 mile training run,…

Yay for Instagram! I'm RunnerKate29!

I don't wear mine to the gym or while running outside...my fingers swell and it's just not comfortable.
-
Good Luck! I'm leaning towards doing my first Ultra next spring!!! Going to finish my first marathon first, but definitely want to do an ultra in 2014! And also like Doriana - I think I'm going to start with 50K (all the courses near me are hilly too...but I kind of like it - hills give me an excuse to walk for a bit lol).

Last winter I ran on the treadmill all the time and it wasn't bad...but now that I've been running outside all summer I'm having trouble getting back into the swing of it. It feels like a mile takes SO much longer on the TM. I think it'll just take time getting used to it again though. I always set the TM at an incline of…

That seems like it would work, but if you're looking for an official training plan with mileage, Hal Higdon has some: http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51121/10K-Training-Guide I've used his plans for my first half marathon and am currently using it for my full marathon in January.

I personally don't think I do now or have ever looked thinner than I am, but... I think a lot of people don't understand what weights look like on different heights. I am 5' 6 1/2", and ever since losing weight I've had a few people ask me if I weighed 100 lbs...far from it! I'm 125! That's a huge difference. I can't even…

I like Hal Higdon's "Marathon" book. It goes over all the basics for first time marathoners with free training plans online. I've been running for a little over a year and am signed up for my first marathon in January (which will put my first marathon at about a year and a half after I started running). I can't wait!
-
18 so far...my first marathon is in January though! Can't wait! Less than 2 years ago that number would've been only 2! It's amazing what you can accomplish when you stick with something!

Pretty much this...I have no close friends who like to run...it's so sad! And I feel like everyone gets annoyed when I talk about running. A lot of the other ones too - I have an extra set of running clothes in my car at all times Plan my weekends around my long runs I get up earlier on the weekends than I do during the…

I'd like to join as well. I am not looking to lose any more weight, but want to work on adding more strength training and hopefully get some abs!
