  • Switch your chicken breast for chicken thigh - it is higher in fat ( and much tastier in my opinion). Have a Google for some low carb fat bomb recipes as well, they can be handy to up your calories and as a source of healthy fats. -
  • I've tried a few recipes for coconut flour brownies and these were the best by far: http://empoweredsustenance.com/coconut-flour-brownies-paleo/ I've also made coconut flour crepes which were lovely warm from the pan but I wasn't keen on them cold - I'd hoped I'd be able to use them as a wrap for a packed lunch.
  • Unrefined sesame oil has a fairly low smoke point so I wouldn't use it for frying foods for example. It would be fine for making salad dressing though. If it is toasted sesame oil you have it is quite good for drizzling a little over cooked noodles.
  • Never mind the obesity - your teeth won't thank you either! I understand about the afternoon slump though as I used to suffer from this as well. Is your lunch perhaps a bit heavy on the "fast" carbs? I found by reducing carbs (I still eat lots of veg at lunch and sometimes some beans/pulses but the bread has gone) and…
  • My youngest (age 7) likes bacon and what she calls a "froached" egg (like a fried egg but when it is almost finished you put on a splash of water and put a pan lid over it so the top goes white). My eldest (9) likes a lorne sausage wrap (lorne sausage is Scottish square slicing sausage [I make my own with minced beef and…
  • I have bought a few of the paleo cookbooks but I must admit I probably use my old non paleo cookbooks more and just adapt the recipes. This might be because I am in the UK and so don't have access to a lot of the ingredients in the American books. I'm also not keen on nuts and they seem to figure quite highly in a lot of…
  • I think you just have to accept that when you stop eating low carb (not even necessarily keto) you will regain water weight as your muscles/liver etc start to store more glycogen. However much that is will be down to your personal metabolism. For me it is approx 7lb. Assuming you can maintain a calorie deficit (and…
  • If you originally thought it was sweat rash is it possible that it might have become infected with a yeast infection? Maybe a cream with ketoconazole or similar would help (usually sold for athletes foot)? I got a really bad urticaria/hives type rash over all my arms and legs the last time I tried to go keto and it took…
  • This is pretty much my philosophy. Do as much as possible from scratch. Cook more than I need of stews, curries etc and freeze the leftovers for another day. And if I use pre-made curry pastes etc I try to ensure I can recognise all the ingredients on the label.
  • I'd just add that if you go down the dried bean route you will have to boil them and cook them separately before adding to your tomato mixture as otherwise you might get an upset stomach.
  • I wouldn't say I had "crappy" sleep (at least not often), but I would say my pattern of sleep has changed since having children. I used to be a really deep sleeper and sleep through the night, but since having children I am a much lighter sleeper and often wake up a couple of times during the night and just go back to…
  • I've lost around 3 stone but I have about the same to go again. And the second half seems much harder. I lost a load of weight when I was in my late teens and kept it off for a long time - so yes, I think it is much harder this time around. I also think trying to fit it all in with jobs/work/children etc makes it much…
  • I followed the 4 hour body diet guidelines and lost around 40 lb. It is really just paleo plus legumes. There is nothing inherently unhealthy about the diet. The diet got me eating far more vegetables than I had ever eaten before - a habit I have kept up since stopping following the diet. Remember that in a lot of places…
  • I'm wondering whether you may have an issue with FODMAPs. I had many of the same issues as you - which strangely never seemed to be an issue before I went primal - possibly because I am eating far more vegetables now. I think it was a combination of the lower carb (less bulk) plus some suspect vegetable choices. I blamed…
  • Congrats on the upcoming wedding! I've been drinking a herbal tea that contains nettle, fennel and dandelion (Pukka [Cleanse]) and it seems to be making a huge difference to my skin. I was getting these horrid spots around my nose and this stuff really keeps it under control. I have one cup full in the morning. It tastes…
  • This sounds an interesting idea. I don't have any experience stir frying kale - my limit is turning it into kale chips. I've not tried the apple cider vinegar in a stir fry either. I'm all for a bit of experimentation! I should also try using mushrooms a bit more - I do like them, they just seem to end up in sauces rather…
  • I would have to say, no it doesn't matter. Although I do know where you are coming from - my electronic scales only measure in 2g increments which frustrates me slightly particularly if I am weighing fats or something. I even contemplated buying new scales, but then had a talk with myself that that was maybe going a bit…
  • I've got a couple, an English toffee and an apricot nectar. I feel I wasted my money though as I notice the after taste too much. I prefer using a flavoured coffee and just adding cream. The brand of stevia I bought was the Sweet leaf sweet drops.
  • I don't have much time in the evening for cooking - although I do love good food and I try to make an effort at weekends. I usually cook huge quantities of stews, curries chilli etc during the weekend and we'll have some for that day and the rest I will freeze in portions. That way I can take something delicious out the…
  • I pretty much do this - my favourite is rubbing it in chinese 5 spice powder before roasting (which is also lovely rubbed on a chicken before roasting)
  • Try to drink plenty of water today. If you find yourself going a bit mad then try to keep drinking plenty of water as well. I do a planned cheat day once a week and I find this helps with the bleugh feeling the next day if I really overindulge.
  • As you said you have a problem calculating baked goods this is my example from yesterday. I made some paleo cookies for a treat yesterday, I entered all the ingredients from the recipe first. Although the recipe said I should get 18 cookies, I actually only managed to get 16 from the batter, so I added 16 to the servings.…
  • I lost weight to begin with without counting the calories, but like the others it did eventually stall. I am counting calories and tracking my macros at the moment which seems to help. I'm hoping that I'll eventually be able to maintain weight without tracking though
  • I have IBS and have tried a couple that have been fine - I'm currently using the My Protein Impact Whey Isolate (unflavoured). I mix it with almond milk and for flavour I add a bit of instant coffee mixed in a tiny bit of hot water. I have also used the Optimum nutrition gold standard 100% whey (I had that in chocolate)…
  • Definitely more definition around your waist - good work!
  • The baby generally takes priority over Mum when it comes to nutrients so I really wouldn't worry unless you are staring from a low weight to begin with. Try to keep sipping on water (maybe with a couple of slices of fresh ginger in it) to keep your hydration up. When I was pregnant my midwife said it is not uncommon to…
  • I used to have a real problem eating far too much rubbish food when I wasn't really hungry, I had genuine concerns that I had no willpower and couldn't understand why not - I can normally be very determined about something when I put my mind to it. About 18 months ago I switched to a lower carb diet and limited (but…
  • I managed to get 6 free range ducks mail order - they were fab, they came parceled up with 2 plastic baggies in the cavity, one with the giblets and one with lumps of the extra fat. That was before I changed my diet though and I put them straight in the bin (the fat, not the giblets). Out of nosiness, will your daughter…
  • Thanks - that Paleo Mom site has loads of stuff. Looks really good :)
