The body can make glucose from protein and fat. The process is called gluconeogenesis, and once you are keto adapted the brain runs mostly on ketones, with some glucose from gluconeogenesis. The belief that the brain can only run on glucose is a falsehood.

I am going to up my protein and calories tomorrow and see if I get some improvements.

That study is based on healthy individuals. They did similar studies with people who have insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or are prediabetic, and there is a metabolic advantage in this demographic. The insulin resistant people lost more weight on a low carb diet. It depends on your metabolism.
