While there are internet sites that say the opposite, it's completely possible to lose weight and gain muscle simultaneously. When you weight train you break down muscle and as it repairs itself you gain muscle. If people didn't gain muscle while losing weight they would always be stuck lifting the same amounts, and I know…

I def don't understand the raw philosophy. I have a friend who says cooking breaks down enzymes that we need to digest food. Really? Our bodies have natural enzymes to break down food. It's in our saliva and stomach acid. We don't need the food to break itself down. It's called chewing. There are nutrients that are lost…

I've been struggling with portion control forever, but lately I've been really trying to fit as much vegetables in my diet as I can stand. Vegetables, and to a lesser extent fruit and beans/legumes, are low calorie so I can eat the same VOLUME of food for fewer calories. Then it's much harder to overeat

This^^ Keep it simple.

The difference is nutrients and fiber!!! I personally don't worry about sugar at all if it comes from fruit because fruit has nutrients that are healthy and fiber that helps you feel full. Most experts only recommend limited added sugars.

I live alone and here's my tried and true almost-no-prep dinner option. Soup in a mug. Get a microwavable mug, fill it with frozen veggies, canned beans, mushrooms/garlic/whatever else you want that doesn't need to be precooked (or precook some meat if you want the additional protein). Add broth/water and spices. Microwave…

I'm a vegetarian and not as active as you, but I do eat "clean" focusing on produce, legumes, nuts/seeds, and a little dairy with as little processed as I can. Add me if you want

I have thought for years that multi-vitamins were useless. I think it's fine to take certain vitamin supplements if you know you're deficient or don't consume near enough of a certain vitamin. Iron if you're doctor says you're deficient or Vit D in the winter seems reasonable. As a vegetarian who doesn't consume a ton of…

I agree with those saying BOTH!! Steamed frozen veggies with a little butter/oil and salt is super easy and yummy. Get a microwave-safe mug, put ingredients for bean soup into it (frozen veggies, beans, broth, spices, water) and microwave for 5 min and you got soup! Pasta takes like 10 min. Wraps or salads take like 2 min.…

I love studies like this that explore nutrition as medicine. It really helps motivate me to eat healthy foods. Instead of just thinking an onion (for example) is unspecifically "good" for me, I can think how it reduces the risk of esophageal and colorectal cancers. It makes healthy eating much more important when you know…

I have found cutting down on my diet mountain dews helped me not crave sweets. But the only reason I cut down was on the advice of my doctor because I'm prone to UTIs and sodas of any kind irritate the bladder. Not craving sweets as much was just a side effect I noticed and didn't mind at all! Did nothing for overall…

Glad you pointed that out. Even veggies have protein in them. All whole natural plant foods contain a combination of fats, proteins, and carbs. Some animal products have no carbs, but they have protein. Common misconception that veggies are only carbs.

The amount of calories MFP says you have left to eat takes into account the deficit, so you can eat all the calories shown on MFP and still have a 1000 deficit assuming you have MFP setting to lose 2lbs a week. Can't help you with the Bodymedia thing. I would say it's totally possible to burn 4000 calories if you've been…

This is my favorite of the pages of comments :)

Eat the cookies if you think you'll just obsess over them if you don't eat them. But remember that the more you go over your calories, the longer it will take to make up for that. If you go 1,000 over, it'll take 2 days of 500 deficit to make it up and break even. I think if you decide to forgo the cookies you probably…

One of the reason I refuse to join my office's "Biggest Loser" competition is because it does push you to try extremes to lose weight. And really the bigger you are the harder it is because, assuming they are going by percentage of weight loss, you have to lose a LOT of weight to get a large percentage. Last time I joined…

I agree that you should see if you've added anything to your diet recently. It could be that you're not eating enough or it could be something you're eating. I started to have headaches and it took weeks to figure out it was from consuming raw garlic. I love garlic, but it doesn't love me. I have to make sure I cook it to…

Haha, love it!

I clicked this post totally expecting somethig about Hershel on the Walking Dead :blushing: Edited so as not to be a spoiler!

My first thought is, maybe you should try some hot tea! :drinker: Otherwise, there are a couple things you can try. One thing I did with my occasional latte and reduce the sugar over time until now I don't need any and it still tastes great. It takes a while but it works. I use vanilla soy milk in lattes because it's…

Just wanted to add that I also have hidradenitis suppurativa. It's an awful condition to deal with, and doctors (at least mine) always seem clueless as to how to treat it outside of warm compresses. I know that, for me personally, trying to avoid dairy has been VERY helpful in preventing new abscesses. Gluten doesn't seem…

I agree with the person who said 1kg is NOTHING. You can poop and lose that amount. I wouldn't freak about gaining until you've gained a few kgs. You could simply be holding a little water weight at the moment. My scale can fluctuate over 5 lbs (2.2kg) in a single day.

I know it goes against MFP dogma, but I decided a while back to stop tracking macros and focus on micronutrients instead. I track saturated fats, iron, calcium, potassium and sodium. Sometimes I switch from S fats to fiber. I track iron and calcium because if I'm going to fall short on something it's usually one of those…

There is no such thing as zero calorie oil spray!! They just make the serving size small enough to be able to put zero calories per serving. Most are at least 7 calories for each second it is sprayed. So if you're like my stepmom and you spray a pan for like 10 seconds, you're adding at least 70 calories!!

Produce, produce, produce! I can get 5,000+mg a day by eating a produce rich diet. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with potassium. So are beans and legumes. I used to have trouble meeting my goal of 4,700 mg a day but not anymore. My main sources are tomatoes, lentils, spinach, and bananas. I would caution against…

Just want to add that even without any movement your fitbit burn count will increase throughout the day. This is because fitbit is estimating total calorie burn and not just exercise calories. You burn calories throughout the day just by breathing and living. Mine usually adds 60 calories an hour if i am completely…

I'm the same way! Started about a year ago. It doesn't happen every time, but at least once a day I'll get super sleepy and cold after I eat. Sometimes it's quite a struggle to stay away and sometimes I take an unscheduled nap. I thought my blood pressure was dropping dangerously low so I asked my doctor. He told me not to…

Mushrooms not nutritional??? Where do you get that idea? Mushrooms have vitamins, lots of potassium, and phytonutrients. They are one of the only natural sources of vitamin D. Studies have shown they reduce inflammation and they reduce the risk of breast cancer. Mushrooms are healthy!

I agree with the other poster that the reason why we tend to combine certain foods in meals is to creat a good ratio. I do wonder though if eating the most nutritious diet possible would yield certain ratios. I really don't think there should be an equal amount of carbohydrates and fats in our diets. At least, I don't see…

I like my tea how I like my men . . . black
