Protein is in almost everything. Yes, vegetables have protein. Not as much as meat, but they still have protein. Beans, legumes, grains all have protein also. Proteins are simply amino acids. Eat a variety of foods and you'll get all your amino acids even without meat. It's not true protein is only found in animals!…

Maybe I'm boing, but pizza and ice cream. I could have cheese pizza and chocolate ice cream every day for the rest of my life without ever getting bored or sick of it.

Agreed. Coconut oil, like all oils, is calorie-dense. 120 calories per tablespoon I believe.

I have some stuffed mushroom from (surprisingly) Walgreens! Stuffed with corn, black beans, bell pepper, and cheese. All for 160 calories!! My favorite store-bought meal. Also brought a salad to the office. I'm getting hungry now too...

Completely agree and I LOVE red lentils!

I just read this the other day: http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-10k-steps-walking-20130907,0,1093349.story Quote: "The 10,000-step daily goal originated decades ago in Japan and has gained momentum in recent years in the United States, in part thanks to all the cool little tracking devices on the market. But many…

Try new spices. I never liked cauliflower or cooked spinach, but now I regularly have them both (with black beans). The secret is cumin, tumeric, and cayenne pepper. Spices can completely alter the way foods taste. I also agree cooking veggies in a good oil helps a lot. Find ways to enjoy veggies. Try new cooking…

I agree swelling in the lower legs and feet s not a good sign and you should try to reduce overall sodium intake. As for natural diuretics, first I suggest upping potassium as much as possible. The RDA is 4,700mg. Fruits and veggies are great. Many herbal teas are diurectics. I prefer Hibiscus. Citrus juice also works…

I agree with the other comments, and wanted to add that if you wanted to lower sugar (refined of course) and sodium you can do so by simply looking for foods that are low in both and low calorie. Vegetable and legumes are low in both. It's just a matter of trying new food combinations. But if you choose not to worry about…

I LOVE Annie's Natural Balsamic Vinaigrette. It's high fat because it's oil-based but it is low sodium and sooo good. 100 calories for 2 tablespoons. I also like just oil and vinegar. I switch between olive oil and flaxseed oil (when I feel like upping my omega-3 intake). Super easy and yummy. As for what I couldn't do…

Not all foods have either sugar or fat. I suggest legumes and beans which are high fiber, high protein, and low fat and sugar. Also vegetables are always a good option.

Just want to point out that just because someone hasn't been on MFP long doesn't mean they are new to trying to lose weight or be healthy. I have only been here a few months, but came in already having lost 45 lbs. I switched food logging sites because MFP syncs to my new fitbit, but I'm no newbie!

This reminds me of the women who run 2 miles and then get a muffin from Dunkin Donuts and think they cancel each other out

I'm surprised no one has mentioned legumes. Black beans, lentils, split peas, etc are super healthy and SUPER filling. They pack in protein, fiber, and complex carbs on top of tons of micronutrients  I really found they made a big difference to my satiety and they give me energy! I do agree with the others that you…

Let me preface this by saying I am NOT a clean eater. The idea of foods being "clean" or "dirty" is silly to me. To answer your question about whether your ability to resist disease is affected by your diet once you're achieved necessary nutrition, the answer is a resounding YES! :drinker: There are sooo many studies…

It's great you are trying to improve yourself and trying to eat in a more balanced way  kudos! I agree making your own salsa is a great idea. I'd also suggest eating the entire orange instead of the juice. You'll still get sugar, but it's all natural sugar (some juices actually add sugar!) and you'll get fiber…

Oh my, more people perpetuating the myth that it's somehow hard to get protein in a vegetarian diet. There's nothing I hate more than people assuming I don't get adequate protein because I don't eat meat :grumble: Really, almost everything has some protein in it. For fellow veggies to buy into the myth makes me really sad.…

How can one possibly choose a favorite? I say drink them all! :drinker: Stash Teas makes a green/white mix that I LOVE. I'm not a huge fan of green tea, but mix it with white tea and it's delicious. Great with some ginger and lemon added. Rooibos (red) tea was my first love. Discovered it in college and it started me…

I'm vegetarian also tend to get over 50. It's not a bad thing, especially coming from fruit and veggies. My doc says it's healthy to get a high amount as long as you aren't getting constipated. Many cultures that rely on plant foods have high fiber intakes. I think the main thing is not to get too little.

I find it easy to get all the potassium I need. Vegetables (tomatoes are really high in potassium), legumes (like lentils), beans, and fruit are all pretty high in potassium. You can look at my diary if you'd like. It's usually the days I eat junk that I don't get the required amount. Other days I'm over 5 grams even…

I would think you are definitely reducing sodium by dumping the broth. I know that draining and rinsing canned beans reduces sodium significantly. Rinsing beans can reduce sodium by 40%! Not sure about draining alone, but you gotta be lowing the sodium content. As for sodium's health effects, I've read multiple studies…

You can either do what others suggest measure a recipe once, input it in MFP as a recipe and assume when you don't measure it that it's about the same. Yea it's a pain to measure the first time, but then you never have to do it again. Or you can try to find the dish in the database and use that as an estimate. I've done…

That would make sense :)

I guess I just don't understand. How is yogurt, fruit, or bagels so unhealthy? I'm a vegetarian and so I don't eat meat and don't have burgers, steak, etc. I eat tons of veggies, legumes, and yea a lot of yogurt. I don't see how that's somehow less nutritious. Plus, chinese food, donuts, and ice cream are not very…

I'm going to think of this now every time you-know-who posts. Goes so well with her profile pic :drinker:

I posted this early this morning. Unfortunately, it was pointed out to me that the author now has a "program" for $99 that she's selling. She also has other "products". Not very sincere, but just a marketing ploy  Here's the author's blog:…

Here's a Starbucks secret, they have a size smaller than a tall. I get a SHORT soy latte! Shorts are only 8 ounces. 90 calories! I get soy only because I think it tastes better steamed not for any health reasons.

Have you seen the HBO documentary Weight of the Nation? It explains why, once a person loses weight, the body does fight to get the weight back. A 130lb person who was once obese will have to actually eat less than a 130lb person who never had a weight problem. I agree it's not necessarily "dieting" forever, but you will…
