One assumes he is British or maybe Australian and is referring to a light snacky meal.

I second sardines. Very cheap, environmentally sustainable, AND low in toxins like mercury etc. High in healthy omega 3s. Easy easy easy to work with. Eat 'em right out of the can, or mash them and put them on a high-fiber / low cal tortilla for a wrap, or toss them with with lemon juice and shallot a hot skillet for a…

I used to have problems pooping out after (or even towards the end of) my morning workouts, but I increased my daily protein intake and BAM problem solved.

Plantar fascitiis. You may only have been running for a short time, but walking also contributes to it, especially if you are prone to it and/or you are carrying extra weight. I do not run but I developed PF just from walking and being fat. I just got some cheap orthotics from the drugstore and they actually helped!…

I started exercising (for the first time in my life, mind you!) at about 330 pounds this past summer. My first day I just went for 8 minutes. Now, at 274 (still super fat, HI THERE!) I workout every day for 50 minutes minimum (some days I do multiple activities and go for 100 minutes). I feel freakin' fantastic! Here are…

I've experienced a similar thing. I've lost nearly 60 pounds, all my clothes are definitely looser / too big, but my waist measurement has stubbornly stayed the same. I've been assuming that I have been measuring my waist wrong. BUT. I realized just yesterday that a lot of it seems to have to do with gravity on my body. I…

You might try tooling around the groups and forums to see if there is a group specifically for moms of difficult teenagers? I know your son is only 12 and has some special challenges beyond the typical teenager experience and I'm not discounting that AT ALL, but a lot of the experience you're describing and the effect that…

I live alone so I don't cook a lot at a time. But the idea for me is to cook up some once a week, then put in the fridge, and they're available as a quick add-in to healthy southwest-style eggs for breakfast, or any mexican-themed type dinner meals all week.

I got a Fitbit Force from very thoughtful and generous friends, which I totally was not expecting. :-) As for the accuracy of the calorie burn. Several things to keep in mind. 1) What it's REALLY GOOD at, and truly designed for, is quantifying your activity from "living your life" -- not necessarily from doing "exercise."…

Doyogawithme.com has a large database of free streaming yoga videos, and many many many of them are for beginners. They also have plans where they recommend a specific series of videos over a specific period of time to make progress and get better. I did the 6 week program for absolute beginners and loved it. The site is…

OK, fine then. I AM a beginner, having started exercising this summer at the ripe age of 42. It's the routine that does it. It's an appointment (6 days a week) with circuit training. Because I know that if I take one day off, then it's the beginning of the slippery slope to 2 days off, then 3 days off, then giving up.…

In the winter, 4 or 5 days a week I eat oatmeal with fruit and milk, sometimes nuts. In the summer, I sub out for overnight refrigerator oatmeal (i.e., uncooked oatmeal soaked in milk and yogurt overnight) instead. Once or twice a week I switch it up and make a quick breakfast burrito with a small low calorie tortilla, 2…

From your brief description it is hard to tell what is triggering you to eat like that, and even what exactly about it is bothering you (salad + chicken breast + potato does not sound like too much dinner, out of context. 1 piece of lunchmeat does not sound like a massive diet-buster). I'm hearing three actually different…

Yes, over a couple of days it should balance out mostly. A couple of things to consider though (your mileage may vary with both of these). 1. I often find that if I eat yesterday's "banked" calories today, my digestive system "can't handle" the excess, if you get my drift. Because the food doesn't stay inside me for very…

IGNORE MFP's sugar recommendation. It is understood by the vast majority of users to be horsesh*t (they automatically set it at <8% of total calories). If you're not eating a lot of packaged foods, you're getting your sugar from fruits, maybe dairy. Nothing unhealthy about that. If you're going to worry about it, just…

I expect you will see some improvement as you stick to your cardio over time, but you may also just have a naturally higher resting heart rate. Training will help some assuming that in addition to being overweight, you are currently very out of condition. But being overweight alone does not cause a higher heart rate, being…

I have been eating around 1900 calories per day since I was at 320ish pounds, though I've now dropped to 285. I'm very very active though.

(Edited because I pushed the post button before finishing) I hear you sister! I'm always really low on fat too, and for the same reason: I "programmed" myself in the past to avoid fat because they used to tell us to. And now "healthy" fat is good for you! Being way too low on fat can -- over time -- cause serious health…

The whole visceral fat thing is not some weird arcane knowledge you shouldn't expect a GP to know about and discuss (if an issue) in even a standard annual checkup, and if your husband had a heart attack it should be on the doctor's radar. This is pretty basic health stuff. If the doctor hasn't brought up a concern I'd…

I always aim to leave 300-400 calories, more if I've had a very active day. This is because I really don't trust the calorie burn estimates and I only eat back a portion of my exercise calories. Plus I actually have a relatively high calorie goal anyway <shrug>.

THIS X1000. Bear in mind, you don't HAVE to lower your sodium, because if you're retaining water it's just water and no big deal assuming you're not hypertensive. BUT I personally find it very very helpful to keep my sodium both 1) low, in the range the user above posted and 2) as steady as I can possibly manage.…

Mmmmm, my doctor put me on Wellbutrin a couple of years ago and specifically WARNED me that it would cause weight gain (just less weight gain than other antidepressants he could suggest). And it did. Maybe there's a miscommunication between you and your doctor about the difference between "won't cause weight gain" versus…

With an older crowd of your dad's friends, I'd say you're best off paying for the food, skip the open bar, but ask the venue if they can run a tab for the birthday boy that you will pay. Another dynamic though -- if the crowd is a lot of relatives, then asking them to contribute to defray the costs should not be a problem,…

"The Jane Austen Book Club" by Karen Joy Fowler is a great recommendation if you have members who are very ANTI sci fi. It's not sci fi itself, but has one character in a book club who loves sci fi and the rest don't, and there's some good discussion of why people like or dislike books. Also it's a good lead in to Karen…

I am finding that even though FitnessBlender.com seems to target fitter people, even they have videos that were very doable for me at 320 pounds -- just focus on their videos that are labelled "low impact," "easy" and "beginner." I've been doing their Beginner Boot Camp A LOT, and have recently added in some low impact…

I've been defriended specifically for making a comment about California roll being "the missionary position of sushi" (because the person couldn't handle dirty talk, not because she was a California roll partisan) so I know it takes all kinds.

Don't worry, I won't friend you. I'm not a friend collector either -- I really only want a few MFP friends who I can interact with meaningfully (and the ones I have turned out to be really helpful). I know there are lot of people around here who seem to be in it all for acquiring more friends they can keep up with and for…

Personally, I'd think it makes more sense to keep your profile private than your diary. I've never had my diary openly judged, for what it's worth, but I kinda think, so what if someone DID? Also, FWIW, if I make a new friend, and then learn that the new friend keeps their diary private from friends as well as strangers, I…
