My trainer was excited to get me into squats and deadlifts, but he coached me (or my body really) for weeks ahead of time to be ready. So instead of back squats on the rack i started with goblets holding a dumbbell, then progressed to front squats a few weeks later, then a few weeks later went to back squats. same idea…

Good investment. Like the gentleman said, good gyms will make a trainer available to you for free for a day or two. Make sure the trainer understands your goals. Unless you are really overweight, the focus should be on resistance training, strength training, and high impact interval training.

flat or barefoot...agree with those above. when i do deadlifts and squats i take my shoes off.
