This thread is coming at a good time for me. I have been struggling with related issues lately. A few weeks ago, I reached my preliminary goal and my weight-loss counselor encouraged me to "enjoy it more" -- buy new clothes, take pleasure in my accomplishment, etc. The plan was to lose another 20 pounds more slowly, over a…

I don't know how tall you are, etc. ... so I can't say how many calories you should eat. But I exercise 5 days per week and gain weight on 1500 calories. I have to stay below about 1400 to maintain ... and a little under that to lose. So you may need to drop your calories a bit lower. Second ... there are plenty of…

I've been on SparkPeople for a couple of years and have just recently begun exploring MFP because I was looking for a site to recommend to my sister. Here's my opinion so far: 1. The "look and feel fo the site" is better on MFP. SP is cluttered and clunky, giving it a steeper learning curve. 2. The food database is bigger…

Cutting out an entire food group is not a healthy way eat. Even the proponents of low carb diets don't recommend "cutting out carbs completely." While there is nothing wrong with a low-carb lifestyle, it has to be done properly (which includes eating some carbs.) If you are interested in trying a low carb lifestyle, I…

What are you doing for strength training? Are you doing enough strength training? Or are you just focusing on cardio and burning calories? If you want to build muscle, you need to strength train and be sure to get enough calories (and protein) for your body to build that muscle.

I am new to the site and still trying to the best setitngs for me. I've used another site for a few years -- a site that gives you a range rather than a specific number -- and I am used to thinking in terms of a range. I don't think that eating the exact same amount each day is realistic, nor particularly desirable. I tend…

I am 5' 2" if I stand up VERY straight. Just joined MFP yesterday to check it out, having been using another website for a couple of years. My highest weight was 203, now down to 152. My goal (for now at least) is to get to 135. I doubt that I can get much lower than that at my age (58). llou

While I realize that it is important to eat enought to fuel your exercise ... I don't like the mindset that "eating back your calories" can lead to. It's too much like "rewarding yourself with food" becaue you exercised. Some of us with weight problems have those problems because of unhealthy relationships with food and I…

I am 5' 2" (or just a hair under that) ... and 58 years old. I started my journey to get healthy 6 years ago at 203 pounds. I've had a series of goals along the way. At first I thought I that 175 was a low as I could reasonably reach and maintain. Now I weigh 152. My current goal is 135 to get into the healthy BMI range.…

I've run into this 1200 calorie "floor" on other websites, too ... and I really think some people give it too much credence. As a 5 ft. 2 inch, 58 year old woman with hypothyroidism, I have a very slow metabolism. Even with 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, I can't eat more than 1300 calories (total consumption)…

[/quote] "... For me, weighing everyday keeps me on track and I'm sure there are others that feel the same. I'm an educated adult and understand the daily fluctuations that can, and do, happen. What I take away from it is being able to see how my choices have affected me. Just another piece of data used in ensuring healthy…
