For deads and squats, the flattest things you can find . . . Certainly Chucks would work, and Vans would be good too.

FYI, I recently tried some of the recipes at http://dashingdish.com/recipe/dashing-dish-official-protein-shake/ Awesome . . . Thanks! :)

I have not gotten too many of these, although I have gotten a few . . . I think the best idea is to take a moment and consider the intent (as implied by their words, tone of voice, body language, their relationship to you, and various other contextual factors). I think that, in many cases, the intent is benign, and as…

For the first time in 5-6 years, I didn't gain any, and I appear to have lost a pound or two. :) That being said, I was doing _heavy_ workouts over my whole vacation . . .

@ameltingprism, vomit: Nope. Ever had anyone throw up on you?
-
@jennpaulson, vacation/friend: Nope, not yet anyway. :) Ever been chased by a predator (bear, mountain lion, alligator, other)?
-
Nope. Ever been to a three Michelin star restaurant?
-
Nope. Ever exceed 175 MPH on land?

Maybe. That's certainly something that I am prone to . . . But I kind of figure that the OP asked the question in a public forum, so I can answer it in my way, you can answer it in yours, and we can discuss it if we like. :) I will finish with the following: after (too many?) years of schooling, I think that understanding…

Interesting, either something is wrong with the web site, or your browser didn't refresh properly. I am assuming that you didn't explicitly try to misquote me . . .

I think that her point (and mine too) is that one needs to understand the theory in order to be able to understand the system, and to be able to make reasonable assumptions, etc, and not necessarily that we should try to proceed from first principles in our everyday lives . . .
-
That statement is at least arguable, with respect to being a reasonable analogy, if not obviously incorrect . . . But "Thermodynamics doesn't have a thing to do with it" _is_ obviously incorrect. You want to make simplifying assumptions, no problem. But thermodynamics actually has everything to do with it . . .

That's absolutely incorrect. One just needs to account for all effects in their energy balance. That is, energy expended by metabolic activty must be added to the "energy out" term, as does energy radiated out via a person's skin, as does energy lost in diarrhea. If one accounts for everything, it will work.

As far as I can tell, these types of discussions always run into problems in the lay community (i.e., not scientists), frequently due to lack of precision . . . Additionally, the answer is not very straightforward. Here is my understanding, stated as clearly as I can do so: * With respect to _losing weight only_, the OP is…

I think everything has already been said . . . Great post, and great job! :)

* All of my clothes are too large. In particular, pants almost fell completely off at work, and belts not even working any more . . . * Lots of compliments from associates (i.e., not friends). * BP down, blood lipids way down. * Now able to do stairmaster much longer and faster than before. * Benching two plates regularly.…

When I started eating hummus, I had no information at all. So, I just tried all of them, that being around 10-15 different brands . . . :) That being said, we have a lot of local brands around here, so I don't know if you will have it, but the best one, by far, is a company called Haig. Good luck!

I am generally against this, but, the other day, there were two guys that were _such_ beginners, and were doing something so stupid, and dangerous, that I felt I had to intervene. I just tried to talk to them in the most non-judgmental tone I could muster. Surprisingly, they actually took my advice . . . :)

Depending on where you are going, the walking around/sightseeing could be a fair bit of exercise. My wife was into step counters when we went to Kyoto, and we averaged 25k-26k over three days, with a one day maximum over 30,000 . . . Regardless of your activity, there is definitely a middle ground. Don't worry about…

Yeah, I shop at Berkeley Bowl. The place rocks . . .

I was also doubtful that eating enough was really necessary . . . Indeed, when I first started changing my eating, I wasn't really paying attention to my eating, and let my cals get _way_ too low. It was ok at first, but after a week or two, I started getting tired and cranky, and my progress slowed. Once I started eating…

Agreed. I eat "snacks" in between my meals, which often consist of things like beef jerky, assorted nuts, fresh fruit, carrots and hummus, a little cheese with some crackers, and Greek yogurt. That is, the foods are frequently kind of "snacky", but generally pretty healthy, and each snack is in the range 300-500 cals.…

Get down another 12 by the first half of December, then maintain until after the first of the year. :)

Keep forgetting to wear a belt to work, and pants coming tenuously close to falling down . . . Friend told me yesterday that I look significantly slimmer. :)

Weights. HIIT. Do stuff outside: walk, ride bike, hiking.

If DCT counts, then yes.

I would quibble with some of the details (which, given that you are an engineer, shouldn't bother you a bit . . .), but, overall, nice post. :)
