Because just about every device out there to give you calories overestimates calorie burn. Even with a heart rate monitor. So, how do YOU know that you're burning 1000 calories an hour? I've had both Digifit tell me that I burned 2000 calories in a 90 minute ride. My power meter didn't show nearly that much work done, so I…

UNDErestimate/ Not in my experience. They tend to OVERestimate, especially if you look at folks who have power meters.

My weight has fallen off in odd ways. I had to get my watch taken in 3 times, and my arms weren't fat. My belly and thighs are still huge. :(

After doing AIDS/LifeCycle I took most of June off. Got on the bike on Saturday (cuz TdF, right?) and wow...I just did 20 miles, with 2 big hills that I've done a few times before. They were much harder than I remember. You lose strength and stamina fast, I think.

Yeah, that will help. Right now I never get the "Garmin" computed calories from cycling into MFP unless I do it manually. Then again, I think Garmin overestimates. But at least the minutes and time of day will be correct. :)

They're not organic, but I've been buying frozen cherries from the grocery store. They've been out lately, though. :( But I put them in my shakes with a little bit of Sugar Free/Fat Free Jello cheesecake flavor. Epic.

In theory, is it as simple as Cal In vs Cal Out? Yep. The problem is calculating Cal In. And Cal Out. The simple models we're using today are pretty inaccurate, it seems to me. First on the Cal In. How much energy does it take to process the food we eat? The metabolic pathway that processes 100 calories of sugar has a…

What do you mean by "tone"? Are you talking about losing fat in a specific spot? Because it doesn't work that way, I'm afraid. You tone muscles by working with them Toning skin I dunno. I'm working on strengthening my abductors and adductors right now because I pulled my groin. But I don't think that's what you're trying…

So you spent an entire workout with a breathing mask on? That's the only way to know 100% for sure, and it's not an MD who would do that. I've never found a place that offered it. VO2 MAX testing, yes. BMR testing, yes. Validating your calorie burn for an exercise session, no. Unless you're in a study, in which case you…

Exactly which calorie counter are you using? Are you wearing a heart rate monitor? Even when I go 100% full out in a spin class, and I'm about your size, the neither the power meter on the bike nor Digifit, which is talking to my heart rate monitor, will give me 1000kCal for a class. I'd be a bit skeptical.

I do weights first, which actually usually is some form of rehab from my physio or core work. Then cardio because when I do cardio I have nothing left to do lifting with...

I took most of June off, after riding AIDS/LifeCycle the first week. I need to get back on the bike now. :)

I've been using the Jawbone UP (not the 24 version) because I got it free at work. It's ok. I haven't found another unit that I thought was better enough to bother spending the money to replace it. (I.e. I haven't seen something that's $100 better than free.) That being said, I do have my eye on the Jaybird Reign and the…

For me it was fat. High fat foods can trigger. Especially KFC. When they switched to their new trans-fat free oil or whatever (and this was obviously before I started trying to lose weight) it was crazy. Within 30 minutes of eating it I would be cramping and I'd be set up for an evening in the "office". No bueno. Thank you…

I never trust "calculations" of energy burn that aren't based on real-time data like a heart rate monitor, and even then it's probably off. Cycling is my main sport, and so I found this interesting: http://home.trainingpeaks.com/blog/article/how-accurate-is-that-calorie-reading It compares calorie output from cycling via 3…

I used the HMR program, the medically supervised version, and dropped weight pretty quickly.

I used to have crazy IBS-D. Then I started working on weight loss. IBS-D has gone away. Completely.

For *me* there's a balancing act. My appetite gets revved up where I want more food that I need, and I don't end up with a deficit. Plenty of other folks I've ridden with have seen the same thing. And, in fact, the advice is that in the later stages of training you shouldn't be trying to lose weight anyway. (Because then…

This is something that is covered a few times a year in my diet program. There is a binge/guilt cycle, etc. So if you *can* "give in" just a little that's ideal. Some of us do not have that kind of control for example, which is part of my problem. I can't just eat a few cashews, for example. Wish I could.

When I get crazy hungry then that's where I go for high volume low-cal snack with fruits and veggies. A big salad, some fruit, etc.

I haven't played with the Fitbit products that much. I was going to replace my Up (which I got for free) with a Flex until they pulled it and folks started having problems. Then CES came and a bunch of more interesting trackers were announced, like the Razr Nabu and the Jaybird Reign, so I thought I'd weight for those. The…

Here's something I learned. This may not apply to you, but it does to me: If you're craving something specific, and if you're prone to emotional eating, then it's probably not real hunger. Like if you open the fridge and stare at a fridge full of good fruit and veggies and "nothing looks good", then you're not really…

Trust me, those things HIGHLY overestimate your burn. If you eat back the exercise calories the UP band reports you'll be on here posting "why am I not losing weight"? It's GREAT for tracking steps. That's about it. A heart rate monitor for exercise is a bit better. ETA: I have the original Jawbone up on my wrist right…

Did they fit you? If you start riding a lot then a "professional" fit will do wonders. It takes a couple of hours, but they adjust all sorts of things. As for how many days to ride - it depends on how hard you're riding. If you're commuting or just easy riding then just keep going. If you get back from a ride feeling like…

You could try cutting back on the exercise. I've done AIDS/LifeCycle twice now. It's a 7-day 545 mile bike ride from SF to LA. It's the first week of June and training starts usually in the first week of January. At the beginning of training it's still easy to stick to a diet. You're doing a 20 or 30 mile ride on a nice…

Depends on how fat you are. Someone who is morbidly obese and a Type 2 diabetic can lose weight very rapidly, such as with a medically-supervised program. Yes, the maintenance phase requires a lot of hard work but in the mean time the person may have lost enough weight so that they're no longer diabetic and are taking…

I started there two. Now I've twice done AIDS/LifeCycle and a couple of centuries (100 mile rides). I got better pretty quickly. It's a fun way to exercise. And it come with snazzy outfits!

Yeah, my HRM would disagree with you. I can get a much better workout and burn more calories on a bike. Also - laps are boring (even if you spend the money on an underwater MP3 player) and not everyone can go find open water. But it's pretty easy to find fun places to ride on a bike. I like swimming for fun once in a while…

People keep saying that and I'm not sure it's true. You might want to have your doctor keep an eye on you, but what's the risk you're concerned about?

The link is $49 right now at 24 Hour Fitness. That's pretty crazy.
