Yes. I lost 70 lb. in 6 months back in 2005. I lost 40 lb. before I felt comfortable exercising. So yeah, you can do it with diet alone. Of course diet plus exercise is preferred.

Welcome back. Don't sweat it, many of us are here because we struggle with our weight. I've lost 70 lb., then gained most back, then lost 25 and gained most back, and now I'm trying again.

But he didn't know what the cause was.

Not true. I worked with a guy that got diagnosed with Celiac disease when he was bout 60. He ate wheat his whole life, but it went undiagnosed that whole time. He couldn't understand why his stomach was upset, he easily got rashes, etc. Doctors he saw all his life never put it together until just a few years ago.

And the whole GMO thing is a red herring. Makes for great alarmist press, but the real issue is eating wheat products where the flour has been bleached and enriched. That stuff is like pure sugar to your body.
-
Wheat is an enemy in the sense that it is very calorie dense, and the calories of most wheat products come from highly refined, bleached wheat which quickly dumps into your bloodstream, increasing your blood sugar levels rapidly, then falling off quickly, making you crave more carbs (sugar rush, followed by a crash with…

Thanks. I definitely worked up to it. I've only been dieting a month or so, but I've been riding since 2008. Fixed gear means that the cog on the back wheel is fixed to the wheel so that if the wheel is spinning, so is the cog, and so are the pedals. In other words, I can't coast. As long as the bike is rolling, I'm forced…

Fair enough. I suspect this is a case where text over the net isn't adequately communicating tone of voice. I looked back and I really don't think I even once criticized your posts in this thread. I asked for a source for one, and prior to that I posted something that was not in agreement with what you said, but that was…

I'm not criticizing your posts; just saying different strokes for different folks. You seem to take it as a personal affront that someone has a different approach than you do. Passive aggressive much?

It's probably something like +/- 50% for MFP's descriptive exercise calorie counts (i.e., 30 minutes cycling at 12-14 mph), but with a HRM it narrows it down to +/- 20%. If you went to a biometrics lab and got baselined, you could maybe get it down to +/- 5% based on HRM inputs.

My definition of "better" is losing weight without getting all stressed out about it. My better is different than yours, and it's working for me so far. If I have issues down the road I may refine my method, but I'm happy with the results to date.

Luckily for me I don't give a darn about athletic performance.
-
Can you cite a source for that recommendation, or are you just shooting from the hip?
-
Not sure what the original poster of the statement meant, but I'm guessing he meant that it spikes your blood sugar (as do all high glycemic index foods) which the body handles by converting some of the excess blood sugar to fat, then when the blood sugar level drops, the person crashes and gets a carb craving. A nasty…

Believes me when I tell him the check is in the mail.

I agree with that. I can tell you how far I ride on every ride, but don't pay much attention to speed or time. I started using Sports-Tracker just to have an idea of what to enter on MFP. But I still don't feel compelled to eat the calories I burn. I'm usually not that hungry when I get back from a ride, and most of my…

I'm regularly eating corn and dropping 3 pounds a week. So there.

Dang. You're on to me.

Huh. Nobody loves me. I guess it's a good thing I don't care.

My wife likes Wii Fit. The interactive nature of it makes it better than watching videos. I like cycling. Coming into the winter, it might not be good to start that now, but it's what I do.
