As with most topics here, you'll get a variety of opinions on this. :) I'm not familiar with the specifics of the plan you're looking at, but if there is NO cross-training built into it, there are some very good reasons to add it. Most of it has to do with preventing injury, but I'll leave it to my pals at the Marathon…

I'll also suggest that you contact your local running store, and see they have any beginners' running groups, or running coaches. If you're concerned about your ankle, they will have good advice for you, and also be able to fit you with shoes that are ideal for your particular stride pattern. Oh, and my favorite C25K…

I'm witty, sensitive, and down-to-earth. However, I'm also juvenile and immature despite having just turned 50, so I think that prevents me from joining your club. And...wait...what was this club you're creating? I'm confused.... I'm working really hard to lose about 20 pounds, is that the club? Perhaps what this thread…

Great stuff -- thanks everybody. I've done a couple of long runs without refueling or water and I was kind of a zombie by the end...but that just might be because it was a new distance for me. I'll continue to experiment with the products you folks have mentioned AND with making the run "unassisted", and see what winds up…

Good suggestions -- thanks. I'll have to give the blocks or beans a try.

He's been watching too much Toddlers & Tiaras, obviously. EVERY kid (of any age) should get out there and sing, or dance, or be in a play, or whatever they feel like doing. They're kids, they should be exploring everything. Their entire lives will be much more enjoyable if they see the world as a place to explore, and know…

Your BMR is 1290, but looking at your diary I see very few days where you've gotten close to that target -- you're usually well under it. Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the minimum calories your body needs to operate all of its systems, not counting the calories you need to get out of bed, walk around, and live your life. So…

1/2 Black Lab, 1/2 Siberian Husky -- 2 years old and has more energy than she knows what to do with, so she's my running buddy. She's almost ready for her first 10K!

Well, I'm talking about "back in the day", as in the 80's. So I did some googling, and discovered it was beef lard and PALM oil they used. Wow, they were good. But they lost out to the war on saturated fats and McDonald's stopped using those oils in 1984. Here's the link I was reading, and it has a lot of good info about…

Wow, I had no idea that coconut oil was so useful and good. I will definitely try it out. I do remember hearing that it was delicious, but not something to eat very often, so it's interesting to hear all of these delicious things to do with it. Now, that said, isn't coconut oil what McDonald's used to fry their french…

Four mile slow run with my enthusiastic dog. We had a blast, and in the new year we'll be training together. I hope to find some nearby dog-friendly races!

Probably more than 60 years old, back when I was in my prime.

Okay okay, I kept thinking about this and chuckling, so I had to fix it: Sorry...I feel like the junior high school boys just took over a serious discussion... speaking as a junior high school boy.... ahem. But LOOK at him!! lol

Just edit the IMG tags so they are lowercase, and the pictures will show up. I loaded them separately, and you've got a lot to be proud of! Good job!

"I'm notta shrimp, Imma PRAWN...n'okay?" I was going to photoshop a little eye patch on him, but it was too much trouble... :)

*IMPORTANT MFP HACK* If you want MFP to be more accurate, then you have the power to help all of us by making it more accurate! When you add an existing food to your diary, click the "Nutritional Info" link to examine the details. If it lines up with what you see on the label, or what you find on another site that you…

The number on the scale is really only useful to track when you have a large amount to shed (and even then, it really only tells you part of the story). When you get close to your goal weight (as you are), it's more productive to track your body fat percentage. Given that you're already at a healthy weight, and your focus…

Hi, That's what the MFP "Goals" section is all about -- enter all those numbers in there, tell it how many pounds you want to lose per week, and presto-chango, it gives you a daily calorie target. Track your food and your exercise, and try to end every day as close to "0 Calories Remaining". Then, as melaniecheeks said,…

RunKeeper tells me I've done 318 miles of running since March. My goal is to run at least 500 miles in 2013.

I saw these at the running store the other day -- I've seen several recommendations for them, but haven't tried them myself. https://www.yaktrax.com/product/run

My brain hurts, thinking about trying to calculate all this... Rob thinks to himself: "Let's see...IF I had walked instead of run during that time, then I need to subtract X calories...but that number sorta depends on how fast I would have walked if I HAD walked (which I didn't)....but if I'm honest with myself, I'm so…

That's so great -- congratulations! You're a runner now, keep it up!

Hi, It's GREAT that you are taking the time to learn more and make sure you're approaching things in a healthy way! That's really important, and will make a huge difference in your life. You truly can trust MFP's calorie targets, that's what makes this site work so well for so many people. You're ending each day about 1000…

*High five!* That's some great progress -- way to go! (And a great new hairstyle, too!)

You'll get all kinds of answers here about "Eat these things", "Don't eat these things", "Do these exercises", and "Don't do those". It's the nature of the Interwebz. For those aspects of your questions, you will need to do your own research and find out what works and what will work for you (meaning, finding practices…

haha -- okay, this made me chuckle. I pray it was intended to do so... Count this as another vote for body-weight exercises like pushups.

Okay, time for an update. I passed this same house with the goat again today. Way in the back yard (remember, this is a big farm out in the country), I spied the goat and saw him suddenly scurry over to a point where he could stop and look at me. He spied me, then BARRELED full tilt across the backyard, through the front…

Hippopotamus. NOBODY messes with a hippopotamus, not even a crocodile. They look lazy, cute, dopey, even cuddly...but they'll kick your *kitten*. And who wouldn't want to be "retromingent". I learned a new word tonight...I need to find an opportunity to use "retromingent"... From Wikipedia: Due to their ill temperament and…

I did the "Run Thru Hell" (in Hell, of course, NW of Ann Arbor) this past August and had a great time. It's an annual race, and has a 10 mile run and a 4.8 mile "weenie run". It's a smaller race and has a nice local feel to it.

I'm a huge fan of the burpee. It's a simple body-weight exercise that requires no equipment, hardly any space, can be adjusted for any fitness level, and it works a really wide range of muscle groups. I think it's a great cross training exercise for a runner.…
