Darn - beat me to it! And yes, I recognised a lot of that in family members who have depression. ETA: To add Part 2: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.ca/2013/05/depression-part-two.html - it answers the flaws in this post even better than Depression Part 1.

Are you talking about depression as in clinical depression or 'depression' as in "having a crappy few days"? Because what you wrote may help with the latter, it ain't gonna do anything with the former. I would also point out that telling someone with clinical depression to smile and the depression will go away will do a…

We call them that on the East Coast too!

Looking at my off-line diary (so I can sort by protein, carb, fat, etc.) I see that lean chicken is the a high protein to fat ratio, which you already knew. In that category there's also shellfish and seafood; cottage cheese; beans; tuna; eggs; duck (if you eat just the breast meat) and, apparently, ostrich meat. Lean beef…

Ahhh. I've wanted a bomb calorimeter since I used one in chemistry back in school. (We were just measuring the calories in foods, not calculating intake. I'm not sure we could've got away with faecal matter in class!!!!) Mind you, they're not accurate either!

Hi, and the best of luck to you. 40lb in six months is not impossible. I started at 238lb at the end of July, just over six months ago. I've lost exactly 40lb to date. I've got another 60lb to go. It sounds daunting, and it's not easy, but it is simple and it is completely doable. How I managed that? Started walking an…

Oh lordy. That's priceless! I was reading down thinking 'sort of, bit extreme, well ... ish, What the hell!?" (You can guess where I started to say that!)

Yeah, that feeling has managed to scupper every diet I've ever been on (that and the deprivation. 100kcal diets are awful!) This time, when I hit my first stall (at about three weeks in - fairly usual), I'd already read a lot of posts on the forum and was intellectually aware that the weight would finally start to move…

Awesome work! Congratulations on sticking with it for a year and a half. Good luck with the last third of your journey.

You can use cream cheese as a filling for pasta - get some large pasta shells and par boil them. Stuff them with a mixture of cooked bacon, spinach, cream cheese, herbs and garlic. Put into an oven dish, pour over passata (I make my own - a couple of tins of tomatoes, onions and basil - reduce down and then blend), add…

I put it in soups and stews to bulk them out. Or eaten raw with dips (houmus, greek yogurt and herbs etc.) It does keep well in the fridge, btw. at least a week. If it starts to go limp, just leave it in a glass of water for an hour or so - crisps it straight back up. You can even put it in coloured water, it takes up the…

In to agree with the other posters. To lose weight, 'all' you need to do is create a reasonable calorie deficit. So counting calories is key. However, how you go about it will definitely affect your success. It's individual, so what works for me won't, necessarily work for you, but in the main - protein and fat are more…

The day I finally ditched the "no fat" mindset, ditched the hideous low-fat spreads and embraced butter (and olive oil) was the day my body loved me again. That said, it depends on what you want to substitute the butter in. There are some things where there is no substitute - scrambled eggs or omelettes; fried vegs (don't…

Hovering around 200lb for a month now. So frustrating to still be hitting 200+ after seeing my first 199lb on the first January. (Okay, I was dehydrated after a full nights' dancing, but still...) Also I'm feeling stiff in the mornings and when I get out for my lunchtime walk. It's probably the weather, but it's taking me…

As explained above. If you're using the MFP method, it's already got the required deficit built in - so eat at least a proportion of your exercise cals back. If you're using the TDEE method, then your daily goal includes those exercise calories, so you don't eat them back. MFP tends to overestimate calorie burns, so you…

Not liking myself enough to change. Using food or lack of food as punishment for being me. Cycles of VLCD and revenge eating. Splitting up with my then girlfriend and now wife, which packed on the final couple of stone due to emotional eating. Oh, and apathy. Sigh - it's my head I need to shrink, not just my waistline.

It's definitely a personal preference and individual response. I never ate breakfast when I was younger - just a cup of coffee first thing before I rushed to work. Then I got into the habit of grabbing a breakfast croissant or a danish first thing - these definitely did bad things to my diet. I would be starving by lunch…

@5'5", Net calories for the past six months were 1,522kcals. Gross was 1,861kcals. 37lbs (ish) lost to date. My only exercise has been walking - three to four miles a day during the week. An occassional long walk at the weekend. Distance averaged per day = 2.7 miles. (Yes, I keep a spreadsheet - can you tell?)

I would steam it in the oven - tin foil, lightly greased. Sliced mushrooms as a bed, salt, pepper and herbs. Herbs can be tarragon, or (lemon) thyme, fennel or celery leaves. Put the fish on top, add a splash of lemon juice, white wine and/or white wine vinegar. pull up the sides of the tin foil and roll down to form a bag…

Yup, know the denial very, very well. It's weird this mental place we can get to where we're all "it's not that bad", but at the same time somehow hating that we've let this get that bad. I started in July 2013 at a shade under morbidly obese (although I had hit that a couple of years before, but managed to lose half a…

Squats always make me giggle. But I've a very childish mind.

Wetwang Nether Wallop Fingringhoe Sandybottom All British place names. And my favourite? Grope[very vulgar name for a lady's front bottom] Lane, in the City of London. (Unfortunately renamed "Grape Lane")

QFT. 38lb gone in 6 months (it's TOM, so my ticker's slightly out) and all I've done is walk twice a day, five days a week and watched the diet as well, of course!

Personally, I think the mojitos are more likely to work (well alcohol certainly has a ...cleansing effect on me!)

Walking is great as a start - I started just shy of a 40 BMI and am down to 33 in six months just through diet and walking. Swimming is also excellent as the water supports the body. If you want something a bit different, aqua-aerobics is also very fun. Some body resistance work would help if you just walk - while your leg…

Weekdays either: Two bacon or black pudding with 2 scrambled eggs. or: Ham with mayonnaise spread on the slice or: Two hard-boiled eggs with mayonnaise. Weekends: Scrambled eggs or omelette with meat (leftovers, bacon or bratwurst) or some other leftovers. I try to avoid too many simple carbs first thing, else I'll be flat…

For those of you who will get fitted for a bra and then order subsequent ones of the same style and size online, also note that a black bra will almost always be slightly smaller than the same bra in white or another colour. It was explained to me that it was because of the dyeing process. I'm a huge Bravissimo fan (pun…

Thanks for the extract from the actual report - it's definitely very different to what was quoted in the source for the OP's critical essay. I also note that it doesn't just include a ban on Subway meats - it includes ALL deli meats, if smoked, cured or salted. Especially smoked. For the same reason that (some)* Cancer…

36lb down and I *finally* saw a change in the mirror today. Actually did a double-take in the full length mirror at work. Then tried to get a surreptitious photo, but was stymied by lots of folk suddenly wanting the bathroom. *sigh* Have noticed a change in my fitness levels before that and clothing is definitely getting…

Well said. And me too - that's what I'm having for dinner tonight - cauliflower, broccoli, bacon, mushrooms and leeks, all baked together in a cheese sauce with mozzarella and parmesan crust. And I'm so looking forward to it!
