  • Who said both definitions couldn't apply (perhaps you missed the word "necessarily" in my post)? The fact is that if both could apply, you use the one that applies to the OP, and not say the friend is trying to help you fatten up since that's what you requested. Oh, and let's apply Occam's Razor here. What is more…
  • "Regain my former weight" does not necessarily mean to get heavier, despite what the previous poster thinks. Regain means to obtain something again. If that "something" was a smaller figure, then to "regain" it is to once again become smaller. Stop being so literal.
  • Not saying she was deliberately trying to "sabotage" you, but her motivation doesn't have to be that she wants you to be fat with her (which is normally typical for fat women). Perhaps she likes you around to be the fat friend, so she'll look better in contrast.
  • So you've weighed and tracked your grandmother's intake every day over the last 20 years? You two must be very close.
  • I agree on the contracts issue, and the gym you describe sounds great (although the monthly fee is conspicuously absent, which is a consideration for some). I don't eschew "corporate" gyms per se. My current gym is a nationwide chain. There was no comparison with the other gyms I looked into (one of which was Anytime…
  • If there wasn't bias on these forums, there wouldn't be much left to read. If I read one more person say how they are losing all kinds of weight with their nightly ice cream... And I don't know about suggesting a vegan read something posted by a "baconslave." I think those two should be kept apart.
  • I was confused about how one would think what you're suggesting is appropriate, but then I noticed how old you were. If/when you have your own teen child, try out all these great ideas on them (or allow others to tell you how to do it, since that is apparently appropriate to you).
  • It's meat all right. Dessicated meat. Not much fat after that.
  • Skim milk: good source of protein and carbs. I drink it often for a snack, although it's not very exciting, admittedly (flavor it if you want more taste and even more carbs!). The milk is actually quite filling for me, and fits in well (90 cals/cup). Like apparently every other poster, I like fatty snacks also, although a…
  • What do you find "weird?" That someone will underestimate your weight when asked (which is universally considered a "polite" thing to do). What a shock! I hazard a guess that some people say you look younger too! It's a crazy world.
  • Of course, but that's a loaded term. The example used, however, was guys who didn't know what they were talking about, despite having "a lot less fat and a lot more muscle." I guess they must have been a couple of those "naturally thin" people I read about so often on here. And, of course, no example of what they said was…
  • You're correct. There is no substitute for accurately monitoring your caloric intake, and the existence of this site is proof that many are successful with this. However, I have dealt with individuals who claim to be trying to lose weight, but also, when given such simple advice, maintain that it's not practical for a…
  • What's your point? Children (to use your example) without adequate protein will develop less muscle than they should. Are you trying to imply that merely because they grow muscle at all, that this refutes something? No one disputes newbie gains. And yet you're the one on a weightloss forum. Makes sense.
  • You were officially obese, and could out-exercise your teenagers? Were they obese also? If not, you may want to look into their lifestyle habits.
  • It's interesting how labels control us. We could be dealing with the discomfort of being overweight, which affects almost every aspect of our lives such as mobility, endurance, comfort and aesthetics, but when we're told we're now "obese," that's when the alarms go off.
  • This is an example where the "moderation" argument actually makes sense. Most people can't subsist on chicken and broccoli, so add a cupcake at the end of the day. Although, for the very overweight, being a bit under isn't something to be concerned about. As far as the "you can't get your nutrition" line of thinking goes,…
  • I wasn't referring to you (the posters in this forum appear to have a particular problem with identifying the target of a comment...apparently, quoting the source isn't sufficient). Perhaps you are hyper-sensitive, due to your own credential slinging. And yes, I know where the fallacy lies. Can you give me a plausible…
  • Yeah, "appeal to authority" is a logical fallacy; besides, Internet credentials are typically worth the time it takes to type them out. Now, if you provided something verifiable, but no one seems to want to do that...
  • The barber shaves everyone in the town who does not shave himself.
  • Why would anyone think that some standardized formula, which has to contend with a myriad of variables (such as activity level), not to mention variations that naturally occur across subjects, would be 100% accurate. It's a starting point. Look at your results, based on what you think you're eating, and adjust as…
  • Are you trying to lose weight? Are you succeeding? If so, who cares what anyone else thinks. You're obviously doing something right. Otherwise...
  • Yeah, I eat all that stuff too. But not when I'm running a deficit. Is it because I think there's some magical property in those types of foods that hinder weight loss? No, it's an issue of satiety. And honestly, as much as I like Chik-Fil-A, I could go the rest of my life without eating there again (although their grilled…
  • I'm a good example of the scenario you mention. Less than a month ago, I was eating literally half the calories I do today. What did my daily beverages consist of? Multiple cups of coffee with copious amounts of sugar and cream, along with at least two liberal-sized Cokes throughout the day. No point in even mentioning the…
  • Most should have a "thing against Coke" (at least if they're trying to lose weight). Unlike many other calorie-dense foods, soda is nothing but empty calories (and yes, empty certainly applies here). All it provides is sugar. And please don't waste your time telling me how important sugar is; we can live just fine without…
  • You know, I'm starting to see the point of dismissing individuals that don't have a profile pic (such as yours truly). However, I have a question: If I place a pic showing washboard abs (for instance), would I have to suffer through individuals who seem to know everything, but apparently can't figure out how to lose weight…
  • Yeah, we don't want those waters all "muddy" with crazy talk about nutrients! We just want to lose weight, and we want it now! Do you guys even read what you write? Should someone desire weight loss, regardless of health risks (yes, that's a rhetorical question)? If not, why even mention that you can lose weight eating…
  • You'd better watch out. MrM something-or-other may call you one of those "faceless demons," or something like that. Unless you're actually Lou Reed or Cary Elwes, LOL! ETA: Or maybe he just reserves that treatment for those who aren't beating the same drum.
  • Gotta love the MFP forums, where one can feel superior for calling someone out on elementary math.
  • Congratulations! You're choosing to follow the advice of professionals, as opposed to listening to the anonymous, unaccountable multitudes whose only selling point is that they have an active internet connection. Was someone trying to tell you to do otherwise?
  • Why worry about what matters? You don't get to your post count by only sticking to the important stuff!
