  • Been away for a couple of weeks I see but still been swimming albeit sporadically, due to work and other commitments. The past two weeks, I've only managed to get in about 2 swims per week! Swim this past Thursday was a killer. Just over 2 km of various intervals all in butterfly! EPIC! And that's with me coming from not…
  • True! For example a perfect calculator would take into account stroke rate! I can swim the same distance, at the same pace at different stroke rates, and I assure you the burn is much higher at the higher stroke rate, which of course means the efficiency was less at the higher stroke rate! So distance and pace are really…
  • Not been on the forum in a good while. I would say I'm in the swim smooth camp at the moment. Most of my life, I've always tried and been taught to get faster by have really long strokes, which is good. But the SPM would also drop way down (which is not so good)! After getting the swim smooth book and watching the videos,…
  • Wednesday 2.5 km swim 54 min - just 2 of us in the whole pool  Thursday 2.5 km swim 57 min Talking of lane etiquette I had a serious whack on the head on 2 occasions Tuesday by kids swimming widthwise! Hardest whacks I remember receiving in a good long while! Great lane etiquette rules Noel!
  • Today I added prescription goggles and what a difference that makes. My old goggles broke and walked into the local sports shop to replace them. Looked at some in a pile and they had "-3" on them and I asked the guy in the store and he says yes they have a prescription! And very cheap too - like they were trying to get rid…
  • Back in the pool today after seven days out *shock horror* with some tummy issues! 2.5 ish km 60 ish minutes. Just glad to be back in! Welcome back Gently after your month away - that was a long break  Great to see all the swims everyone is getting in!
  • Interval training/ sprints will jump that heart rate right up there! Distance covered after the session will be shorter, but I imagine it involves some good burns! May sound obvious too, but the faster you swim and the more you exert yourself, the more you burn! Many will have a slow leisurely swim and tell themselves they…
  • Some other interesting info I came across: How to prevent “Swimmer’s Shoulder” by ZwemZa on April 13th, 2016 http://www.zwemza.com/?p=28650 If you’ve invested even a moderate amount of time training up and down and around the black line you have become intimately familiar with the term ‘swimmer’s shoulder.’ Given that…
  • Great to see everyone swimming away, and the return of some who have been on hiatus! Haven't logged in but I've been swimming. Last week, long swims mon, wednesday 2.5 km Sprint interval mixed training Tuesday and Thursday. Yesterday, it rained and I couldn't swim. Today 2.5km 57 min with a number of interruptions! Glad…
  • Bilateral breathing, neck position, stretching and shoulder dryland exercises, and be sure to ease into it. Don't rush it even if you're feeling real string. Let the shoulders especially adapt to the new challenge that you are putting them through. Rush it, and believe me you'll be out for months!!!
  • Swimmer to Swammer… to Masters Swimmer https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/swimmer-to-swammer-to-masters-swimmer/ I’ve never seen any stats on the matter, but I’d be willing to bet that the majority of folks who spent their formative years as competitive swimmers don’t return to the water in adulthood. As a former…
  • Hi folks. Haven't checked in for awhile but been swimming. 4 swims monday to Thursday! Long swim (mon, wed), interval training (tue, thurs)! The interval training is real tough, but great challenge all the same! Resting now to resume Monday! Body needs the rest bad! Great to see all the swims people, and those that have…
  • Today's swim was about 65 min of drills and interval sprints of all sorts, in all strokes! It was a really tough session, and it's a good thing I train on an empty stomach because at one point I thought I was going to throw up (puke) in the pool! Yes it was that hard. It's been a very very long time since any sort of…
  • Recently, with my discovery of kick sets and intervals, when my elbows begin to give me problems, I start to emphasize on the kick sets with kick board and snorkel, to ease some of the pressure that comes with the many repetitions of a certain movement that come with the long swims. So I'm finding that mixing up the…
  • So I finally added a kick board and snorkel when I realised just how weak my kick is! Use them at every opportunity now - trying to get kick sets in as often as I can!
  • Robertus great to see you back! All the best as you ease yourself in. Ease in and pay attention to the body, and you should be good!
  • So yesterday's swim was meant to be a straight 2.5 km freestyle swim, but the pool was chaotic with loads of kids swimming in every direction for at least 45 min of the time. So I ended up doing about 900m freestyle. The did about 300m kick sets. Then did some more freestyle, some breastroke and a couple of butterfly laps.…
  • Lol I so laughed reading this! I wish I could swim as fast as you on your "disaster swims"! Lol  100m on 1:40, 1:35 and 1:30!!! Wow!

  • This is hard. Why do I do this again? Got to keep up with these kids - my goodness how can they kick so hard? Surely that rest interval is too short - coach seriously you cannot expect me to do another 50m butterfly interval? I could barely finish the last one!!!! Oh I'm never doing this again - no no no! Can't breath!…
  • Today was just a tough hour long training session with the school kids. I need to check my garmin swim to figure out all the stuff we were doing. But it was basically tons of 50 m sprints in all the four strokes on very short intervals/ rest intervals! My butterfly strength is a pale shadow of what it was when my long…
  • Yeah! I'm needing a dash of this inspiration today!
  • Christian support group and the group for triathletes. Don't visit the triathletes one very much! When I restart he running, may visit it abit more!
  • Wow! This kicking problem is widespread! Emma and mpeters (Melissa) y'all are lucky. Planning to get one of those combined kick board pull buoy things in the next week or two and begin to incorporate kick sets a lot more as I try to improve my kicking in a big way. Will probably be scouring the net for resources on good…
  • Yesterday (Thursday) - 33m pool: 198 m warm up 66m x 10 on 1:40 33m x 10 on 0:50 33m x 10 on 0:50 198 m warm down All freestyle sprints. On sprint days, I Try to go all out on each sprint giving it as close to 100% as I can or am able to, then gulping for air during the break as my heart rate drops down a few notches,…
  • That is a big switch - but an important one. Must be tiring!!! Very very true UG. Maintaining form even when tired and there is he temptation to just do something else is very important. Good stuff! Hang in there mpeters. I think deeper pools are faster, or vice versa! I used to get styes all the time, although haven't had…
  • Yep I think you have to do it through a browser and not via the mobile app!
  • Monday (yesterday): 2.5 km in about 59 min. Pool was packed with people swimming widthwise and couldn't get any sort of rythm going. A few crashes too! Today: 1 hour of various intervals and drills with the school kids, and boy was it a complete revelation. I am faster than the kids in terms of sprint speeds. However when…
  • Wednesday - laborious 2.5 km about 57 min Today Warm up - 165 m 10 x 66m on 1:45 10 x 33m on 0:50 10x 33m on 0:50 Warm down - 165 m In the past 2 weeks I have lost 2 of 5 stubborn kilos I gained in the run up to December which I've been trying to lose ever since. So I'm suspecting the interval training has shaken things up…
