Take at least 2 or 3 rest days for every day you run.
-
Don't forget to HYDRATE: at least a gallon or two of water for each mile you run! ** ** - (be sure not to do this or you may die for reals)
-
Run at night in black clothes, back facing traffic. Be sure to turn your ear buds up really loud!
-
Yes indeed, be sure you have a dog and jogging stroller with you as well.
-
Nice - wash it down with a couple pots o' coffee and you're good to go!

Listen to Carson! Are you looking to become a runner for life? If so, take your time and build your base. Learn how to race. There is NO magic to running 26.2, it is a long way even when properly trained. Just say no to death marches!

I'm an early morning, empty stomach runner (6-7 days a week). It usually takes me ~ 25 minutes to get out the door - need to wake and use the restroom (for sure).

Don't come crying to us when your uterus falls out!

runningahead.com I never run with a phone (the less to carry the better)

I've been running consistently for 11+ years now. I'm usually good for ~ 2,400 mile per year. This year will be low, I'm thinking ~ 2,200.

As it gets cooler out - remember to "dress for the middle of the run," you'll warm up once you crack a sweat a couple miles in.

It's finally fall here in So Cal - perfect running weather every morning (low 50s)

this old thread needs a bump

Safe to awesome you got an awesome finisher's medal. Post a pic!

Oh man, what are you using as a recovery drink?

Get some halfs under your belt. Not just surviving, but learn to race the distance. In doing that you'll continue to build your base. You'll know when it's time to run a full. I can assure there is nothing magical about running 26.2, it's a long way even when properly trained. No need to rush it.

We're opposite foot twins!

My $.02 - it depends on the runner and how many miles per week they are currently running and also what their goals are. Lots of these post look something like this: "I just finished C25K and I my 5K time was 45:00. Now I want to increase my speed for my next race, what kind of speedwork should I do?" That kind of person…

Ran 8 miles this morning in just under an hour (59:15 = ~ 7:25 avg pace per mile). My Garmin had my burn at 1,140, MFP has me at 1,100. Runnersworld calculator has me at 1,089 (as per below). Again nothing magical about burning 1,000+ in a hour, you just need to be right mix of pretty heavy (I'm ~ 180) and pretty fast. I…

Wow, great job!

The best of pace groups is you can join them and leave them as you see fit. No need to sign up, just find them at the start line and you're all set. Ditch them as you see fit.

I ran in Brooks Adrenalines for 10 years. I'm now on my 2nd pair of Hoka Bondi B. FWIW - I tried the Stinson Evo Tarmac and HATED them. The shoes was shoe, but the upper and tongue were so rough. I traded them in for Bondi and I liked them much better. I did not instantly fall in love with them, as I wasn't sure what to…

Not all pacers are created equal. They can be very helpful, but you need to show up ready ditch them if they go out too fast. The Clif Pace Team is almost always dead on. For small races the running clubs put out requests for experience runners to lead the groups. I just did my first pacing gig a couple weeks ago. Lead the…

Nothing to be methodical about, the only goal is deliberate pace changes without any specific times or distances.

Nice to see this old thread getting some action, lots of new runners could benefit from this.

I did one last year. As an early morning runner, it was not my favorite time of day to race (ours started ~ 8:30 pm?). As an early morning/empty stomach runner/racer, the food issue was tough for me.

Start with some fartleks. Here's a post I wrote about them. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/356724-fartleks-speedwork-101-for-new-runners?hl=fartleks#posts-14504346

Indeed, that would make more sense.

I there a typo on your weeks? That last 2 between marathon & 8 seems out of whack (makes for an extra taper week). Two miles the week before your marathon doesn't make sense, while the pretty standard. FWIW - I would try to be upping those long runs by a couple miles, IMHO one 20+ miler is not enough, three or four is more…

Well it sounds like that half gave you some neg split training so that's always good. If you feel like your recent training supports a 9:08 pace, then go for it! FWIW - I would rather run an even split slower race than a crash and burn faster race. Once you put together a well run race from start to finish you'll know what…
