Well, this is not a science forum. I'm sure you can find the necessary literature on Elsevier or the likes, but you'd need to pay for those articles. Some body building blogs provide sections that focus on (interpreting) scientific news (usually news from popular magazines and newspapers, rather than the actual papers, I…

GOOD FOR YOU!!! I cheated and had two tall cans of beer on Sunday. But that was after a long hike in the forest.

That 300 kCal potato would indeed be quite huge. A regularly sized potato is half that amount of calories. But then again, I'd eat two of those ;) Potatoes are healthiest when boiled and unpeeled or mashed without too much butter and milk. Fried in a Teflon pan, the calorie count isn't as disastrous as perceived. For me,…

Cardio, cardio, cadio... If you want it targeted, do your cardio in bed ;)

Ya, that's an absolute success! Well done man, well done!

Kudos to you!! I quit smoking 11 months ago and testify that it was the best decision I made, ever. Losing weight, getting back into shape, eating well, sleeping well...It all came in the slipstream of the Big decision. Keep it up. Life is endlessly better smokefree!

Just went up and down the gym with my Urban today. 15k to and 15k fro. Getting there in the tropical sun, coming back in tropical rain. Quite an experience! Saw the most amazing double rainbow on the way back. Again, people from all kinds and races looked at me from their cars and the road side: bewildered, fascinated and…

BUMP I had a PT session the day before yesterday and - man, did you do a good job - I can barely get up from my chair today! It's too painful for comfort (slight muscle sore, I do not find unpleasant at all), but at least I know that I took a good beating that makes me stronger. Shoulders etc. are fine, so I'm planning to…

Sure. But if you cheat, cheat well. I would, personally, achieve my target first. Then celebrate with a cheat day.

**** Dale and his Del-Tones, The Pyramids and The Apemen. Or just get Better Shred Than Dead: The **** Dale Anthology to start with. It's surfguitar, it swings, it's got the right BPM and it's cheerful. It's also guys music, but hey, you wanted to try something new right? Ayoooh, one cannot type the name D*I*C*K any more?…

The trick that may work for you is not to run too fast. If you don't run relaxed, it starts to hurt and it becomes very unpleasant. Running (jogging) slightly below or better still just nicely at your capability is fun, provided you have good music to listen to. And that it helps you lose weight. If you practice enough,…

Ya, that's a sweet story! Kudos to you! It must be quite rewarding for most PTs to see people lose weight, although they also seem to have to work very hard for their salaries (FF Malaysia). Undersigned today also got some compliments from friends who had noticed that I had lost weight (yet more)!

Haha StuAblett, that's great. Yes, that is my bike! Mine has big black saddle bags. Some friends jokingly says it looks like a Nazi bike because it's all black but they are all totally jealous. It's an 8 gear (well, in reality 7).

Those are the bonus calories! Suggest you record the time you do exercise and record it under cardiovascular as "strength training" or "gymnastics". Immediate caloric gains are not huge, but indirect benefits significant: muscle growth and generally better health.

Hello too! You'll find everyone's very friendly ;) Enjoy!

If it's not the healthy lifestyle that motivates you to keep going then, quite simply, there is something in the background that keeps pulling you back to some comfort zone. You need to find out why you want to be there, in that comfort zone. What is it that you think that zone brings you that you do not have when you're…

Ya, judging from what you write, I'd say you're being too hard on yourself. It's not about being Spartan to yourself, because this is about a life long change in behavior. What you describe seems like you're in the middle of a marathon. Speaking of which: where's the exercize in your daily routine? Just find something that…

No need for anybody to cheer you. The scale will, very very soon after you replace that wine, beer or other booze with tea. Lots of it. You know what, you'll forget about the difference pretty soon. Try it!

Ignotus is right. Exercise with a cold can do wonders. Just make sure you clean the apparatus well. You don't want all others the catch that cold too. Sick = rest is a western medical concept that doesn't go down well elsewhere, e.g. in Asia. My colleague broke her ankle while rock climbing. Hospital told her to sit and…

Such wonderful responses. The day gets better all the time!

NicNac is right. Strength training (but also gardening etc.) can be found in the database and that is how it can be put under cardio. The caloric values given are pretty low for such activities. But strength training costs calories not for the duration of the exercise but the intensity. That determines muscle growth, and…

First came the decision and the act to stop smoking, then to do sports again, then to want to take better care of myself, then the desire to lose weight and finally (when I got stuck at a particular weight), to seriously reduce alcohol consumption. It makes me feel so much better. But, in the past, I quite enjoyed my…

This is how you eat mango as a regular fruit (image on left): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Mango_and_cross_sections.jpg Mango is good in any salad or cooked dish where it could replace another fruit (apple, pineapple). It goes particularly well with chicken. Fry chicken in pan, add slices of mango in…

I quit smoking 10 months+ ago, and have lost 10 kgs net since then. If you replace the urge to smoke with a healthy urge to exercise, it will happen. Keep it up! Honestly, life is so much better without the ciggies. It gets better and better every day.

Welcome and agree, it's a nice program. You have a fascinating mom!

"You're Beautiful" by James Blunt. I wanted to burn down every shopping mall that played it, and they played aaagggggh ALLL the time. It is the soggyest song with the stupidist song text ever.. UGGGGHHHH!!! Gooooooooohhhhhhh, what a loooser.. The word ****ing actually appears in the text, but that's an insult to the…

Yes, a bit of jumping and arm movement will help. But KEEP IT SLOW. Better accept that at times you will have to take it easy, especially when you're only beginning. Seriously, the risk that you strain yourself is quite huge. Then, you may not be able to do anything for weeks. Tell your PT that you're in pain. He's go…

I believe it's around $20 per hour in Fitness First, but that's in Malaysia ;) We don't consider that cheap here either. The PTs are professionals and they work really hard. They must be making the bulk of FF's income, even when the membership rates aren't cheap either. Then again, is it worth the cost? Of course!

Being a Dutchman, I grow restless when I can't grab my bike for this or that. Living in a tropical country poses an extra problem: no proper bikes for sale here. One can get the full range of cheaper type of mountain bikes and only the lowest quality Chinese regular bicycles. So, I imported my own bike, a Burgers' Urban…

I just answered the same question on another thread. Okay, it's guys music, but anyhow fantastic for running: **** Dale (surf guitar, any album) and Messer Chups (Crazy Price and Hyena Safari). Much of Rammstein's work is also pretty hot for a run, but again, perhaps more for the boys. For the girls? Dunno. Neneh Cherry?
