I'm going to post this here because I'm inordinately pleased with myself. My max is 315 in competition. This week in training I pulled 290 for a double. My previous best was 285 for a couple of doubles. The past couple of weeks I've been cutting a bit of weight and dealing with life stress so the rep PR was a nice lift for…

It's not a badge of honour. I'm just not into it.

I've seen people pass out at meets and have done it myself once or twice. It's definitely exciting but not earth shattering. You start to walk away and it's like you're on an escalator heading down...

I'm 50 but haven't had a hysterectomy. I understand that recovery can take a while as one of my team mates had one in the fall and didn't believe her doctor that it would take as long to recover as they said. We are both competitive powerlifters and she's taking her recovery seriously so that she can continue to compete.…

Maybe they are suggesting in a round about way that some men need to squat more :)

I'm a bit of a veteran. I compete at 57 kg both equipped and unequipped. I've been competing for 7 years and have about 25 meets under my belt.

You could try Clutz training templates for beginners or intermediates. This is a link to his program http://www.clutztraining.com/ I wouldn't suggest smolov if you are new enough to the sport that you are doing stronglifts. I've done both the bench and the squat cycles. Smolov for bench wasn't too demanding but squat…

I use Rehbands, SBD and (old style) Titan sleeves. The SBD ones are longer, thicker and more compressive. They can be difficult to get on if they are tight so if you purchase them, pay attention to sizing. The size of both the SBD and new Titan ones coming on the market is dictated by the maximum allowable thickness and…

Years ago I lost weight and got to be thin like I thought I should be to look good. However, I didn't start looking as good as I wanted to until I started lifting.

I would offer him his own constructive criticism. Approach him in a friendly and inoffensive way and tell him that he may not be aware of it but that his training methods are counter productive to building a business, building customer loyalty and motivating his customer base to change. Say it in the nicest, most helpful…

I'm with you on this one. I've been training and competing for years. I only really paid attention to that when I first started. In the past 5 plus years I rarely pay attention to pre/post workout nutrition and yet I get stronger. I think if you are elite and the top of your sport, that type of micro management would…

That's interesting and a bit ego inflating, at least for the women's standards. They put me at master for my last raw meet and elite for my last single ply meet for total in the open standards and I'm 50. Our association (Canadian IPF affiliate) has similar classification standards for championship qualifications.

What's a class 2 lifter?

I'd be wary of the knees past toes advice. Whether your knees go past your toes is dependent upon your body's mechanics. I have long femurs. When I squat (low bar) keeping the weight centred over my feet, my knees go past my toes. Much of it is the mechanics of your bodies levers. You are definitely correct about…

Which part should be parallel; the top or bottom?
-
I go as low as I need to go the get white lights; just breaking parallel. Warm ups tend to be much lower just to get some mobility in.
-
I've never used the app but I've run the cycle for both bench press and squat. It's a killer, high volume, heavy cycle that can be difficult to recover from.

Why USAPL? We have a ton going on in Ontario. Do you have an OPA/CPU membership? Where are you located? If you want more information on what's happening in Ontario check out the OPA website http://ontariopowerlifting.org/. Our membership is growing like crazy and once you join and compete, you'll meet a ton of like minded…

I used to subscribe to the school of thought that squats and deadlifts were enough. However, every time I throw ab work in consistently, my squats and deadlifts get better. My go to are: straight leg raises (toes to ceiling/bar if possible) bar roll outs fall outs dumb bell side bends suit case carries front squat static…

I'm built for conventional but prefer modified sumo. The downside is the strain on the knees. However, conventional always kills my back. Try both and see what works best for you; what you're more comfortable with.

I think it has to do with airway constriction resulting from inhaling cold air combined with an over developed gag-reflex. This has affected my for over 27 years without any ill effects so I never really worried about it. I would just chalk it up to one of those things.
-
Is it cold? Whenever I do anything in the cold, even train in my basement when it's cold I cough a lot. Years ago when I would run outside in the winter, I'd cough 'till I'd vomit. It doesn't happen when it's warm though.

I don't wear them training. The bar rarely touches my shins. However, we have to wear them on the platform. I stick to plain black. I used to wear fun styles but, as with a lot of things, some people jumped the shark with it made it look foolish. I've recently had to turn down socks with capes and other attachments at…

If bicep strain is your concern, use a hook grip. If trained properly it will yield the same grip strength as mixed. I only use this grip. It's double overhand with your thumbs wrapped under your fingers.
-
Like others said check with your doctor but I also think it's fairly common. Years ago when I did basic training I puked during every morning run we had. Every time. I don't know if it was heart rate or that increased breathing in cold air triggered my gag reflex.

This is true for me as well. With bench in particular, I have difficulty making any gains.
-
This is me as well. Anger is a distraction. I focus on what I'm doing at that moment. I've been told that when I'm competing, I look completely bored with what I'm doing, that my face is expressionless. Like finding what program works best for you, finding your way to your mojo is an individual thing.
-
Actually I prefer a bit lower; hitting my xyphoid process. When I arch, that's the highest point off the bench.

Wow. There are a lot of different responses here. I just wear whatever underpants. Typically bikini. They are the best bet for staying out of my *kitten* crack. Forget thongs, boy shorts or anything like that. Also forget commando. I don't sweat much when I train so I don't wash my shorts every time. They usually have…
